Fast, simple, not expensive, little errata, but only reasonably fun. (War game Review)

In his review on BoardGameGeek, Brendan Whyte first turns a critical eye towards the components and rules and lists their shortcomings. Game play fares better: “…the game is fast and quite fun”. Whyte then goes into comprehensive details covering game mechanics and spares no criticism for the game opponent (AI). Game: Empire of the Sun

(e388)

Publisher: GMT Games
Game Type: Board
Designer(s): Mark Herman
Search for this and related games with Noble Knight

Description:

Empire of the Sun scenarios were designed with the busy enthusiast, grognard, and competitive tournament player in mind. EotS was designed to be played n yearly scenarios (1942, 1943, and 1944) of three turns each that play in under two hours. If you are a fan of CDG's, EotS takes the genre into a familiar, but new direction. If you are a fan of classic hexagon wargames, this game has all of the features that brought you to this hobby in the first place, but with a new level of excitement and replayability. The game is comprehensive, but easy to learn.

[REVIEW] Empire of The Sun

Boardgames Chronicle reviews Empire of the Sun which, in my opinion, is another one of Mark Herman's excellent designs, published by GMT Games It is strategic level look at the entire War in the Pacific from the attack on Pearl Harbor until the surrender of Japan. "EotS is the one of the Card Driven Games (CDG) which moves the system closer to a classic hexagon wargame, while retaining all of the tension and uncertainty people have come to expect from a CDG. Players will play roles of MacArthur, Yamamoto, Nimitz, or Mountbatten and direct their underlying forces across the breadth of the globe from India to Hawaii and from Alaska to Australia."

Empire of the Sun: The Pacific War, 1941-1945 from GMT Games – Basic Training Episode 2 – Counter Anatomy

I remember one World Boardgame Championship I was walking around looking at the various tournaments when Mark Herman corralled me and asked me if I wanted to play Empire the Sun: the Pacific war, 1941-1945 by GMT Games in the tournament. Having owned the game but not yet played it, I accepted and, after he gave me a quick tutorial, he paired me with one of the elite players who of course cleaned my clock but was a gracious instructor and opponent. I wish I had access then the series of tutorials from The Players Aid. Here is the 2nd tutorial covering that goes over the values on the counters.

Playing Empire of the Sun – South Pacific scenario

Several years ago at the World Board Gaming Championships I was taught Empire of the Sun by no other than the designer, Mark Herman. After his tutorial he quickly placed me into the WBC tournament where I was crushed as the American player. But it was great fun, taught by a great designer and a great guy and I enjoyed the experience immensely. So now the Boardgames Chronicle brings us a replay of GMT Games’ simulation of World War II in the Pacific. They too "had so much fun, especially in my first two attempts to play that title that whenever possible I am coming back to it."
