VASSAL Module for Midway
Here is a module for Midway from Avalon Hill courtesy of Harald Fair, Jeff Wise, and Joel Eckelman. There are both standard and double-blind versions of the game. VASSAL is a game engine for building and playing online adaptations of board games and card games. A growing list of game Modules is available at the VASSAL web site and at web sites for some game publishers. Players can play solitaire off-line, play live on the Internet or play by email. Vassal runs on all platforms, and is free, open-source software.

C64 Midway Campaign (sp) [1980, Avalon Hill] - full gameplay, with US win.
In this video play through from Poland, Syntax Error plays this computer version of Avalon Hill’s Midway and wins decisively. The Commodore 64 was an 8 bit microcomputer popular in the early 1980’s. The computer could generate 16 colors, limited graphics, and somewhat sophisticated sounds and music. Avalon Hill published several games for the Commodore 64 including Midway Campaign based on their Midway board war game. The game was nominated for the Charles Roberts Award for Best Computer Game of 1980. War game sounds and graphics have come a long way from 1980!

VIC-20 - Midway Campaign (1983)(Avalon Hill)[16k] (Video)
Here is a short video showing the screen display for Avalon Hill’s Midway Campaign for the Commodore Vic-20 computer. The Commodore Vic-20 was an 8 bit microcomputer with 5 KB of internal memory that was popular in the early 1980’s. The computer could display 22 characters per line in color and could generate rudimentary sounds.

Battle for Midway (a.k.a. Midway Campaign) Download (1983 Strategy Game)

Midway Campaign DOS – 1983 (Midway computer version)
Avalon Hill published computer versions of many of its games including Midway (as Midway Campaign). ”HOTUD” gives a quick review of this game available for download here. Home computer graphics and capabilities were primitive in 1983 but the game still has some appeal. This web site offers versions written for DOS on the personal computer, the Apple II, and for two of the computers from Commodore, the VIC-20 and the Commodore 64. Coders may want to try their hand at enhancements as the programs were written in BASIC!

Avalon Hill published several games for the Commodore 64 including Midway Campaign based on their Midway board war game. Each kit might contain updated maps, counters, player aids, and rules to add variety and new challenges to these classic war games. The kits are free. The game has some twists, though "…fortunately for me a bit of skullduggery threw Pat off the scent…". But does that clinch it? "It could have gone either way, and the game was tense throughout."

Johnny Big Bird aka ostrichjo posted this review of Avalon Hill’s early air/sea battle game. The review includes an overview of the components and game play. Overall, the reviewer rates the game at 6.5 on a scale of 10 noting some problems with the rules and game play but concluding that the game is “…well done and is a forgotten classic.” Interesting comments from five other Midway players follow the review.

Blind Man's Bluff with 1,000 lb bombs
Steve Mizuno reminisces about his early war gaming days and posts this positive review of an early Avalon Hill classic. Mizuno praises the game, especially for its having “A beautiful hidden movement system” and he likes how “The force pools and victory conditions are incredibly balanced.” Several commenters chimed in to add to the conversation concerning other games based on the battle of Midway and some of the computer versions of the game.

Incredible Victory, Incredible Game
Sean Chick gives a mostly positive review of Midway. While he doesn’t give the game high marks for historical accuracy, the reviewer calls the game “…a simple and fun wargame that can satisfy the itch for carrier combat without being too time consuming.” Unlike other air/sea battle games that stress complexity in search of realism, the reviewer feels that Midway “remains in a comfortable and respectable middle ground”. Commenters added information about tactics and variants.
