From: Joseph Justice (dogfitr@rocketmail.com) Subject: New Landships scenario: The Great Offensive of 1919 Hi. I just wanted to let you know that I've started to firm up my plans for the landships game that I'll be running at Origins 99. The event number is 40, the title is "The Great Offensive of 1919". The number of places available is 16. The actual scenario is on maps 6 and 8. It is an attack on a German strongpoint after the initial "Trenchstorming" attack. The idea being that after reorganizing that this is a deliberate attack on the first objective behind the German line. The Germans have infantry in the trenches around the town on map 8. They also have adjuncts consisting of tanks, cavalry, and artillery. These adjunct forces may be on, or off map at the players discretion. The entire German OB is divided into 8 parts for the 8 players, with players rolling off if they cannot agree on who should have what. The U.S. Army players get 25 FT-17's(cannon armed), and 15 Mk 8 Liberty's, also each group of 5 tanks gets an infantry company; 4 platoons consisting of 3 rifle, and 1 mg. This is sufficient for 8 American players. Each one taking 5 tanks and 4 ft counters. Additionally, the Mk 8 groups also get one leader counter, Patton, and his lieutenant's are in on this one. At game start all trench, and town hexes on map 8 will be struck with a 10 power hurricane barrage. The American's must seize at least one town hex to win. Next week I'll send the actual OB's. I've playtsted the scenario, and I think it should work out fairly well. The idea is that the Germans would not or could not accept the terms the allies wanted to impose, leading to friction between the Allied Occupation forces, and the German civillians in the areas they occupied. At some point in the winter of 1918-19 minor resistance begins to develop. Finally the French, the most aggrieved power, end up hanging some laborers; coal miners or factory workers et al. The reaction among Germans is immediate, and severe. The most radical Germans; Liebknecht, Luxembourg, Ludendorf et al. demand that the government end negotiations and prepare for a new offensive to drive the allies out. Cooler heads prevail however, and the Germans decide to simply stand on the defensive, refuse to sign, and hope that the allies will change their minds rather than lose many thousands of men in a new offensive. Nothing doing. The allies make a pretense of being divided, however they too make a decision, as soon as the ground dries out enough, to allow the new MK VIII Liberty's to lead the attack. In the first two weeks of May there are numerous "patrol actions" and artillery duels in the new no-man's land. Additionally there are large numbers of aircraft over Germany to gather aerial reconnaisance. Finally at dawn on May 23rd 1919, a one hour barrage is unleashed against the German line, this is followed by a ten minute barrage of gas shells. Casualties are horrendous on both sides as the Allies, including the 2.5 million+ men of the first, and second American armies begin to break the German lines. In some places however, the going is fairly good. One of these places is near the town of Schweinburg, a German strong point, and depot. By 0900 an American force of 40 tanks, 15 of them Liberty's, and eight companies of doughboys have arrived to seize the town. Contrary to orders George S. Patton; newly promoted to Brig. General will lead the attack. Number of players: 16 (I know it says only 8 in the book however I designed this for 16 so if you show up with 2 generic I'll be more than happy to see you.) Selection of Forces: If players cannot decide there will be a roll off, highest roller gets first choice of which side and so on. After sides have been determined, players will need to decide which player gets which force; there will probably need to be roll offs for this as well. Once this has been done, both players will need to decide how to deploy. The American player deploys on the bottom half of map 6. The German player deploys his infantry in the town hexes on map 8. This includes the trench hexes around the town. Also, 3 of the German adjunct forces are deployed on the map at the start. These may be deployed in the town hexes or in any hex on the top half of map 6. Special Rules: 1. This will be a limited intelligence game, in that the German units will not be placed on the board until they fire, or they must be placed according to the sighting rules. 2. All ART guns, and AT guns are considered field guns. 3. German Tanks can only enter from the top edge of map 8. 4. German Cavalry may enter from the top or sides of map 8. (Cavalry is faster.) 5. Before play begins a 10 power hurricane barrage will be fired at each town hex. (That's what the artillery duels were for in the weeks prior to the offensive.) 6. Dismounting cavalry will be represented by the best counter with their morale factor.(I might make counters if necessary.) 7. German players may choose any main force, and adjunct force from those available. 8. Adjunct forces 4, 5, and 6 start on the map. The others are brought in as reinforcements, this may be done on any turn. 9. The American player moves first. Maps: Maps number six, and eight will be used in the following configuration. 8 6 Here is the OB: U.S.Army Force #1 Force #2 Force #3 Force #4 Force #5 5 FT-17 5 FT-17 5 FT-17 5 FT-17 5 FT-17 2 3-6-4 Inf. 3 3-6-4 Inf. 2 4-6-5 Inf. 3 4-6-5 Inf. 3 4-6-5 Inf. 1 2-6-4 Inf. 1 4-9-5 MG 1 3-6-4 Inf. 1 4-9-5 MG 1 4-9-5 MG 1 4-9-5 MG 1 4-9-5 MG Force #6 Force #7 Force #8 5 Mk VIII 5 Mk VIII 5 Mk VIII Col.
