Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1993 15:10:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Brent Pollock Subject: Scenario BP1 ADRIATIC BARRICADE ASL SCENARIO BP1 RICCIO RIVER VALLEY, ITALY, 1-19 February 1944: After the gruelling ordeal of Ortona, the Canadian advance along the Adriatic coast eventually ground to a halt at the end of January. What followed was twelve weeks of static warfare characterised by daytime sniping and shelling and aggressive nocturnal patrolling. BOARD CONFIGURATION: Board 13 (Only hexrows H-AA are playable. Board orientation is determined as per SSR 2.) BALANCE: German: German Elite Infantry are Stealthy. Canadian: Exchange the Canadian 8-1 for a 9-2 Leader. VICTORY CONDITIONS: The side with the most VP wins. Casualty VP are awarded normally and each side also receives 1 VP for each Building Location on the opposing side of the stream searched and 1 VP for each Set DC in such a location at scenario end. TURN RECORD CHART: 10 Turns. Both sides enter on/after Turn 1. See SSR 2 for determination of the first side. GERMAN OB: 1st Para. Div. Night Patrol [ELR: 4] enter on/after Turn 1 as per SSR 2: {SAN: 0} 3 x 5-4-8; 8-1; DC; 12 x ? CANADIAN OB: Carleton & York Regt. Night Patrol [ELR: 4] enter on/after Turn 1 as per SSR 2: {SAN: 0} 3 x 4-5-8; 8-1; DC; 12 x ? SPECIAL RULES: 1. Make a dr to determine Weather: on a 1 or 2 Mud is in effect; on a 3-5 Mud/Overcast exists and on a 6 the weather is Mud/Light Rain. Wind is ignored. No roads exist and the bridges are treated as Fords. Olive Grove (F13.5) is in effect. NVR is determined as per E1.11. Both sides have Level C Booby Trap Capability and this may not be exchanged for Mines. The stream is deep and frigid. 2. Make a dr to determine the Friendly board edges. The German board edge is H0-AA1 and the Canadian board edge is H10-AA10 on a dr of 1-3; the opposite holds on a dr of 4-6. All hexes on the Friendly side of the stream are controlled by that side at start. Make another dr to determine who moves first. On a dr of 1-3 the Germans move first, otherwise it is the Canadians. 3. Neither side has smoke grenade/star shell/Sniper/PF capability. Canadian Elite Infantry are Stealthy. 4. The Wind Change DR has the following effects. On a DR of 2 the ATTACKER may place an IR in the Prep Fire Phase or in the Defensive Fire Phase of the following Player Turn. Each side may record a Level 4 Offboard Observer anywhere along the Friendly edge solely for this purpose. On a DR of 12 the ATTACKER loses this IR capability for the balance of the scenario. 5. The DC may not be Placed/Thrown but may only be Set in Building/Ford locations. These Set DC represent freshly placed booby traps and may not be detonated as per A23.7. Rather, an enemy unit must take a TC whenever it enters a location containing a Set DC, failure of which results in the immediate detonation of the Set DC. The Set DC may be removed as per B25.75 but an original 12 Clearance DR results in the immediate detonation of the Set DC. The initial Clearance attempt may not be made until the location has been searched. AFTERMATH: By day the Riccio valley was a no-man's-land. At night, control of the valley went to the most aggressive side. Both sides would sally forth to take prisoners, ambush enemy patrols, set booby traps and reconnoitre enemy fortifications. With the withdrawl of the remnants of the 1st German Parachute Division on February 20, the balance of this dreary pastime tipped decidedly in favour of the Canadians. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1993 16:08:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Brent Pollock Subject: ASL Scenario BP2 MELFA BRIDGEHEAD ASL SCENARIO BP2 MELFA RIVER, ITALY, 24 May 1944: "Chesterfield" was the name given to the Operation devised by 1st Canadian Corps to breach their sector of the Hitler Line. The second phase of "Chesterfield" required that Griffin Force establish a bridgehead across the Melfa River. This arduous task was accomplished by the Reconnaissance Troop, headed by Lt. E. J. Perkins. Before the Germans started to counterattack, their toehold across the Melfa was reinforced by 'A' Company of the Westminster Regiment. Inherent in each is a 3-3-8 HS as crew and one DC, LMG and PIAT as SW (available as per U.S. Vehicle note Z). Any Stuart Recce HS may set up dismounted and in possession of any/all of the three SW available from its vehicle. AFTERMATH: Early evening heralded the arrival of approximately fifty grenadiers supported by four panzers. The commander of 'A' Company, Major J. K. Mahony, directed his PIAT crews to engage the armour at long range with high-angle fire. As the Germans advanced they were greeted by the full weight of the company's rifle and MG fire. After the infantry went to ground the tankers lost heart and withdrew without firing a shot, despite having closed to within 200 yards. Mahony would be awarded the Victoria Cross for the unflagging leadership he displayed throughout what was to be a restless night for the Westminsters. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1993 21:10:31 -0700 (PDT) From: Brent Pollock Subject: ASL Scenario BP3 DEJA VU? ASL SCENARIO BP3 COURSEULLES-SUR-MER, FRANCE, 6 June 1944: The port of Courseulles-sur-Mer was a German strongpoint, known to contain numerous AT guns and MG nests. The task of neutralizing these installations was given to the Canadian 7th Brigade and the hardpoints west of the River Seulles were detailed to 'B' Company of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. As they neared the beach it was evident that they would have to start without the support of AVREs or DD Shermans. Confronting them was the 85th Division of the German Fifteenth Army. The morning of the 23rd saw a small kampfgruppe from this division set off to counterattack Esschen while the Governor General's Foot Guards headed out to attack Wouwsche Plantage.
