The
training program developed by the Luftwaffe in
the early 1930s required that candidates who had
been found suitable through a severe
psychological and attitudinal selection began a
long training before being assigned to units.
For fighter
or dive bomber pilots, initial training
lasted 13 months, followed by a second phase of
specialty training that required 200 hours of
flight.
For reconnaissance and level bombers
the period was even longer, about 20 months, at
the end of which the assignment to groups and
operational training began with 270 hours of
flight.
