Indeed, there were mostly non-English because
most of the divisions employed in the Eighth
Army came from the so-called Dominions:
Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa to
name the most representative ones that were each
framed in a division: the 9th Australian
division led by the legendary General Morshead,
active since July along the coast, the
2nd New Zealand division led by
Freyberg and considered the true antagonist of
the 90 Light Afrika, the 5/4th Indian
divisions expert in mountain warfare and often
sacrificed to defend important reliefs such as
Naqb el Qadim and Ruweisat, and finally the
1st South African division led
by Pienar, deployed from the beginning to defend
the El Alamein box and then chosen by Montgomery
to form the fabulous four of
Operation Lightfoot.
