From: "March, Robert" Subject: Glory replay and discussion and questions and... Hi all, Since the list is not too busy for the holidays, I thought I might contribute to the traffic a little. My friend Mike and I set up the First Bull Run scenario of Glory yesterday (and finished it! woohoo! it seems like I never finish games these days), and I thought I relate the play (all from memory though) briefly. We decided to play with both the commitment rules, historical reality (limited AM choices going into cup) and overall command capability (limited number of picks for each side). Play started very slowly (with me as Union and Mike as Confederate) as we both kept drawing low OCC chits (I think I pulled 3's and 4's about 80% of the time). Tyler got activated on the first pull though, which was bully for me - he ended up being my workhorse. The flow of play went pretty much as follows: Tyler got activated early and often and pushed Evans off the bridge and pulverized Cocke's Brigade. Meanwhile, Hunter and Heintzelman s l o w l y made their ways into position just north of the Turnpike. The rebs were moving slightly more efficiently early on, so they were able to set up a line just north of Henry Hill, though closer to the victory intersection on the pike than to the Run. However, Mike kept Evans stationary the whole time and I had to spend significant time clearing him out so that I could set up my own line. By the time I was ready to make a concerted attack effort with all 3 divisions, the rebs had set up a strong defensive line and Jackson (ulp) was on the way. Jackson came up along the east side of the map and actually split across the Run bringing about half his forces up on each side. At this time, Tyler was just finishing up clearing Cocke's Division away from the bridge area and I decided to fall back to shorten my lines (unfortunately surrendering important victory hexes). Our lines finally came together and Southen troop quality proved to be the deciding factor as Mike was able to continually punch holes in my lines (although I was able to hit back fairly well as my short line left me with some reserves). The game ended with me not routed but staggering, and Mike with a hefty 12 VP margin. So there you go, that's the short version of it. Any opinions on winning with the Union in this one? I couldn't get better than a 6 draw at all with the OCC rule. Does the OCC rule just wreck the balance of the scenario or do I just need to take tactics lessons? Also, a rules question came up. With the OCC rule, it is very possible that a division will not get picked. The rules allow for any division so skipped to be able to move units not in combat so long as they stay away from the enemy. However, they don't give any indication whether you could possibly rally routed or disordered units at that time. Can you? We think you should be able to, but didn't do it this time, just to keep with the spirit of the rules. Ah well, it is a fun game which allows both players the opportunity to attack, even when they are on the defensive. I hope to hear some comments so I might be able to win it one of these days (sigh). -------------------------------------------------- Robert March |rmarch@nfesc.navy.mil Civil Engineer |Lord of New Lithuania Naval Facilities Engineering| in Dogbert's New Service Center | Ruling Class Port Hueneme, CA |
