From: Doug Murphy Subject: 100YW replay Played again this past weekend. Began with the Crecy scenario. English get triple taxes and free units due to Nationalism. English units in Aquitaine mop up FR milita in St Enge and Pointu and Brittany, seeking to control the coasts. Edward crosses over to Calais with a large force and secures Picardy and Normandy before preparing to move on Paris. English allies in Flanders wipe out FR militia. The French get a decent leader DuGu in "events." He and Phillippe besiege Edward In Cherbourg and other English units in Calais respectively (since these ports abut an Eng-controlled seas, not much happens). But now the wheels fall off for the English... Corruption takes half the treasury. Unpaid troops revolt and pillage all of Ireland, Wales and Cornwall... Successful FR Diplomatic attacks cause the Scottish lowlands to ally and invade Lancashire, taking Chester. (Edward has left few units in England.) The Scots rampage southward but are stopped at the gates of London by some hurridly recruited pikemen. English offensives in France collapse as Cherbourg is successfully stormed and Edward captured; Calais falls and Flanders is invaded. The stunned English (me) sue for peace, and immediately begin plotting a rematch. But, for the nationalism event to take effect, the other side has to occupy your home areas. I don't see how this could be true for the English at the beginning of the Crecy scenario. Phillipe died, but was replaced by Jean and DuGuesclin. Edward fell in battle and was replaced eventually by Fastolf. He, in turn, fell to a conspiracy. The French had a civil war (ouch!). The Black Plague hit, wiping out mucho English. Burgundy entered the war on the side of the English. Corruption occurred to the French. The French rolled up 6 chivalry on the Feudal Array table 3 turns in a row. One of the problems that continually occurred was not having the money to pay all the troops, though the English suffered less from this. One of the real problems the French have is that their provinces mostly only produce 2tp apiece. Since it requires at least a 1tp maintenance militia to garrison the place, most provinces only provide 1tp net. The free chivalry really don't make up for this, since you have to waste a lot of time gathering them together. I really had to wonder where the French were going to get the money to convert to a centralized state. I guess you would need some kind of long truce, allowing you to demobilize most of your troops. No free units.... ...My mistake, Noel...The English got triple taxes via the Parliament table and purchased said units....seemed like a free gift to me :) I have only played the game solitaire, but the random events really make things interesting. ...That's putting it mildly. Joe Miranda likes random events...heck, it seems every game he's designed w/in the past year has 'em. But IMHO, in 100YW they really impact play (as opposed to in 30YW when they seem to give temporary advantages or disadvantages. I really had to wonder where the French were going to get the money to convert to a centralized state. I guess you would need some kind of long truce, allowing you to demobilize most of your troops. ...Yet another reason for the English to grab the French by the proverbial throat and hang on...but with a large treasury (seeking to convert to centralized) and relatively few units, it would sure be tempting for the English to renege on said truce. And of course, one bad event can take away those hard-earned Tps and ruin your whole day. Doug Murphy
