Peter Stein - 06:59pm Apr 27, 2003 PST (#789 of 893) Enjoy the Flames! After Action report: Friday AM got to check out Mark McLaughlin's follow up to Nappy's War, WELLINGTON IN SPAIN. Think Nappy's War without the Diplomacy. The French are split into a Northern and Southern army, their opponents are Brtian and Spain. A lot more cards in the deck are Response or Battle cards, which makes it much more tempting to play them that way instead of CPs. Nick Smith and I played the first turn with Jeremy Billones helping Nick on turn Two. I had some troubles, but some very hot dice kept me in the game. On the last card of Turn two, I was able to sneak Marmont into unguarded Madrid (I had the card that let you move two spaces with no chance for interception). Needing a six to conquer Spain, SIX!! VICTORY!! The game worked well as both a two and three player game. I wonder how the North French player would work in a four player game, but others who tried it gave it a thumbs up. Thanks to Fred Schacter for walking us through the game. Friday afternoon I had some time to kill before an early dinner and got in a few turns of Phalanx's WATERLOO with Andy Lewis (he was doing marketing research :-). A fun little game I hope to play agian. Friday night I demoed MANIFEST DESTINY. A more detailed description of the game can be found in the MD folder, but everybody seemed to have fun. (especially Jason, who wound up winning despite blowing me off on a Unity proposal and then blew the dieroll to get the Breakthrough himself). Saturday AM I hung out for a while and got sucked into a Chitkickers game of Nappy's War. As France, my hot dicerolling of Friday reached new, insane levels. Now I also got the perfect card to help me along. On turn one, when Britian (Britt Strickland) threatened invasion, I was able to one by one sink at least half the British navy in one impulse. Meanwhile Spain whupped the Brits out of Lisbon. Napoleon sat in Eastern France and watched as I tried but failed to lure Turkey in. Turn two it reached even more ridiculous proportions. I finally got Turkey in my camp, only to lose him to Talleyrand. No problem as the Spanish played the Papal Bull to get me back up one square, and France got Turkey in again, this time for good. Finally the Austrians (Gerry Haggerty) and Russia (Dan Raspler) launched an attack on Nappy. With five extra dice, they rolled six 5's and one 6. I rolled one five and Six 6's. That's a tie, except I had the Rally card which wiped out their 5's and turned it into a routed Coalition army!! Britt now got Wellington into Gibraltar with some troops. The Spanish had a decent force, so I took a gamble and tried to push him off the rock. I was outgunned by 6, until the Spanish played Horse Artillery and rolled a six (what else!). Soon Wellington and his boys were gone. Needing a six to end the game for turn two, I of course made that roll too and won. Thanks for the game guys. I know that next time, I'll probably be on the receiving end. After all, I couldn't pull a game like this off twice (Could I?) Saturday night I got to play GUILFORD COURTHOUSE with Rich Simon. The historical scenario is a nice quick game i recommend. My Brits pulled out one of those marginal victories that Greene probably gets credit for the win becuase most of the Americans lived for another day. We wound the night up with a quick game from the ROME set of three. Andy won that one but I know I'll have to try that again. Sunday I played a quick game of Hellcats and Corsairs. Since there were no dice in this one, Gerry and I got squashed by Dave Fox and Wrey Ferrell. Later Sunday Nick Smith and I played WILDERNESS WAR. Or tried to. Neither of us had played it much, and we both kept making mistake after mistake. Example: I wound up taking two battles to successfully assault Louisbourg- only to then realize that the Surrender card I had let me walk in without a battle. Ooops! There was a whole slew of other stuff there, but I'll let others describe that. Not a bad weekend- eight games in three days. (I seem to remember a Formula Motor game in there somewhere, but who knows?)Thanks to Andy Lewis for running the show, and Dave Fox and Allan Rothberg for doing a lot of work for it. Apologies to those who's names I forgot, and it's always great to match Consimworld names with faces. Jason Levine - 12:22am Apr 28, 2003 PST (#794 of 893) Well...it was a pleasure seeing everyone I knew again...and also meeting some new people for the first time. I really want to again thank everyone who put this together. The other thing I would like to do is to thank all the people who taught me new games this weekend and helped teach me some strategies as well. I guess my final count on games was 10 (Clash of Giants, Wilderness War, Progress & Destiny, Formula Motor Racing, Winds of Plunder, Clash of Giants II, Mercantile Kings, Down In Flames, Europe Engulfed, and Brandywine)...not bad...5 in print games and 5 future games. Now that I am hearing about Downtown...I wish I could have tried it too...but I guess I will have to wait until next year for that! If you want to read my AARs...check the main GMT folder...if you can wade through all the other 500+ posts in the last 3 days :) Anyway...I had a blast...and I am looking forward to seeing everyone at WBC in July and then at GMT East 2004 next April! Robert Tyson - 01:27pm Apr 28, 2003 PST (#800 of 893) This was my first time at GMT East and I had a good time. Didn't play as many games as I'd have liked, but then I was only there on Saturday and left around 7pm. Napoleanic Wars definitely seemd to be the hot game, at least on Saturday. Wilderness War saw several playings on Saturday as all as PoG. Did get to see Attilla and it looks like something I'll pick up. Being a boy though and not a man, I'll stick with the Simple GBoH rules. Seems to me that there are WAY to many dice rolls to make in GBoH, but maybe I'm wrong. Also got the chance to play some of Adam Starkweather's game "It Never Snows in September". Did I get the title correct? Played it with Rich Simon under the tutelage of Adam. We were only playing one small battle from the game (the attempt to rescue Frost at Arnhem) but the battle and system is very intensive and detail oriented. If you like your systems with lots of detail (and the detail seemed logical to me) you'll like this one. It's gonna be a big one! Anyway, I plan on going to GMT East 2004 and plan on being there for at least two days this time. Assuming it's at the same hotel (very nice) I can drop the wife and kids off at the pool while I play. Or one of my daughters might give Guilford Courthouse a try. She was looking through the game on Sunday, thought it looked interesting and asked me to teach her. Rob Allan J Rothberg - 07:44pm Apr 28, 2003 PST (#808 of 893) Consimworld one big happy dysfunctional family. (This AAR from Eva) Allan and I recently went to a convention hosted by Andy at the Crowne Plaza in White Plains New York. I personally could say the shopping was great for as you all know I am the expert. I did very well, if I say so myself LOL! (Allan wasn't too pleased with the fashion show, oh well.) Anyway, I did find the host, Andy, to be very accomodating and very attentive to everyones needs. He made sure all ran smoothly and was very successful. From what I saw, and that was a lot believe it or not, every one had a great time: women; children; and most of all the men. (The mall didn't do too badly either.) There was a nice turn out and everybody was smiling, including Allan. I only wish more people could have joined us. I guess I will see everyone at the Hunt Valley Inn. Once again I extend my thanks to Andy and his family who really did a terrific job. Oh, by the way, Allan did his share as well My love to all, See you all soon Eva
