From: Kevin Gonzalez Subject: Samurai Swords Notes Here are a few notes I created for my friends who play Samurai Swords. I don't know if they will be useful to anyone, but here they are: SAMURAI SWORDS Outline of Troop Movement during ACTION 7: WAGE WAR A Move Daimyo's Armies Only ARMIES move from FRIENDLY PROVINCES to adjacent FRIENDLY PROVINCES. PROVINCIAL FORCES cannot move. UNITS may leave an ARMY at this time to garrison a province that would otherwise be left empty. UNITS may not leave an ARMY at this time for any other reason. When an ARMY moves into a province already occupied by a PROVINCIAL FORCE that ARMY may pick up any or all of the units in that PROVINCIAL FORCE. B Declare First Battles No movement is allowed during this phase. Battles may be declared against adjacent ENEMY PROVINCES and adjacent UNCONTROLLED PROVINCES. C Conduct Combat COMBAT occurs only for attacks on ENEMY PROVINCES Experienced Daimyo's must resolve ALL their battles BEFORE the next ARMY fights. Experienced Daimyo's armies may MOVE into DECLARED EMPTY PROVINCES during this phase. THIS COUNTS AS A BATTLE. Special Rules for experienced Daimyo's Armies 1. They may make attacks equal to or less than their experience level. 2. Between each attack the ARMY can MOVE into the NEWLY DEFEATED PROVINCE and make its next attack from there. 3. IF, after a SUCCESSFUL BATTLE the ARMY has one or more attacks remaining it may do one of the following: a. MOVE into the new province and make its next attack from there b. MOVE into the new province and WAIT for Phase (D). c. WAIT for Phase (D). 4. IF, after an UNSUCCESSFUL BATTLE the ARMY has one or more attacks remaining it may launch its next attack ONLY from the province it currently OCCUPIES. AFTER an ARMY makes its final attack (or only attack for inexperienced Daimyo='s armies) it CANNOT move until Phase (D). D Final Movement Move ARMIES first then move PROVINCIAL FORCES ARMIES move the same as in Phase (A) except that they can now CONQUER empty provinces. UNITS may now be SPLIT from ARMIES to CONQUER empty provinces. PROVINCIAL FORCES move only AFTER all ARMIES have moved. PROVINCIAL FORCES may SPLIT at this time. UNITS that are moved into a province occupied by an ARMY may join the ARMY. Rules to Remember 1. A player wins immediately upon gaining control of 35 provinces. 2. Levy only one unit per province during ACTION 4: LEVY UNITS. Never place a unit on a province and then place another unit in an army (on the army card) that is occupying that same province. 3. The number of ronin in a provincial force or army must always be at least ONE LESS than the number of regular units they are joining. 4. During ACTION 9: COLLECT KOKU each player receives AT LEAST THREE koku. BE CAREFUL WHEN CHOOSING TO PUT A UNIT INTO AN ARMY OR A PROVINCIAL FORCE. Q When can a unit join an army? A A unit may join an army in three different ways: 1. By being placed with an army during the ACTION 4:LEVY TROOPS. 2. By being picked up by an army when an army enters a province during Phase (A) and/or Phase (D) of ACTION 7: WAGE WAR. 3.By moving into a province occupied by an army during Phase (D) of ACTION 7: WAGE WAR THESE are the ONLY times a unit (such as one in a provincial force) may join an army. Q When can a unit in an army leave that army? A Units in an army may leave only in two circumstances: 1. To form a garrison in Phases (A), (C), and/or (D) of ACTION 7: WAGE WAR. 2. To conquer a province during Phase (D) of ACTION 7: WAGE WAR. They MAY NOT LEAVE in any other way. NOTE: You CANNOT leave behind a unit or units as a garrison in a province that also has a provincial force (in an effort to reinforce the provincial force). No garrison is needed in such a province. Q How do you reinforce a provincial force? A By placing a unit in the province during ACTION 4: LEVY TROOPS.
