The following Q & A was obtained directly from telephone conversations with Doug Speer, the owner of Speerit Strategy Games and creator of the GETTYSBURG: THREE DAYS IN JULY' game. Could you change your facing after battle to avoid being fired on your flank etc? Answer: Yes-You can change your facing at will during your turn. Is the railroad considered a road? Answer: No Which are bridges? Answer: If the road goes under a stream, it is not a bridge. Reinforcements: Does the initial hex of placement count as an MP Answer: No During combat could you stop after any round and face away and therefore not have to have combat? Answer: Yes When you move into an enemy ZOC, must you stop? Answer: Yes Do you have to fight all units in your ZOC? Answer: Yes If you are in an enemy ZOC, but he is not in your ZOC, you do not have to attack - is that correct? Answer: Yes, that is true. In relationship to the last question, in his turn he could go away, fight you, or turn so his ZOC is not on you. Answer:Yes-True You only must attack unit (s) in your ZOC. Answer: Yes-True 6.22 Paragraph 1 Applies to attacker only-the defender always uses his full strength? Answer: Yes-True Do you rotate (alternate) firing in different battles until all battles have fired and then the next 'Round' begins? Answer: Yes Does Arty fire on the phasing player before he moves any units? Answer: No-As units are moved, they are fired on, and any of the phasing players units that do not move and are in range of Arty get fired on just once. Can the attacker voluntarily retreat? Answer: Yes and he can be fired on by Arty. You retreat thru your rear hex (s) and not into EZOC, and you can then not have combat (My note: in a subsequent 'Round', I don't know) Can two attacking units in the same hex each fire at a different target (They must have the same facing)? Answer: Yes Re: Road Movement Answer: Doug said if in doubt, let the player be the judge. Re: Woods Answer: Doug said there are not many-judge 50% or more. Re: Stonewall Answer: Doug said there is one at the angle and near the wheatfield. What if you move 'behind' one of your own units meaning that enemy Arty could not fire on you, but what if you then move the unit in front, 'exposing' the back unit to Arty fire, could he now be fired on? Answer: Yes When Arty is in combat phase (not Defending Arty fire) and in line formation, can he only 'Fire' into the front hex? Answer: No-he has same ZOC as Infantry or Cavalry (3 Frontal hexes (Considered to be firing cannister)). Do you get Defending modifiers against Defending Arty fire (Ex: Woods, Town)? Answer: No Two units in a hex in Arty range and they remain-does each unit get fired on or just the hex Answer: One fire in this instance. You move a unit (A) into X. Arty is in (D). Arty can fire on you. Now if you move another unit into X could it be fired on? Answer: No! (My note:I had been doing this wrongly. Doug said this is so you can 'sacrifice' one unit to 'cover' for other advancing units). X A D Does Defending a stream or stone wall mean ON the Stream/Stonewall or BEHIND them? Answer: ON them Are slopes the High ground hexes? Answer: Yes When moving, must you 'Face' a certain way? Answer: No Would it be possible for one unit to go by another, becoming adjacent to it but not stopping because ZOC's do not hit one another? Answer: Yes Can Reinforcements move in the turn they are placed on the board? Answer: Yes, but they can not enter combat (My note is I guess they could be fired on by Arty). Can you hold back some of your strength to avoid higher casualties: Answer: Yes What is the strength of a unit that has four boxes on the step reduction chart and box 4, 3, and 2 are 'Xed' out and in box 1 there is one slash (a 'half' of an X)? Answer: One Can you divide combat against two units Defending a hex Answer: No Arty can fire more than once (and on all units that go into its FOF) Answer: All units that enter its FOF (conceivable hundreds of 'Fires'). Re: Moving units one at a time. Answer: Each unit completes its movement (momentarily stopping to resolve Arty fire), then next unit moves etc. What if Defending Arty is three hexes away (or less) from attacking units that don't move? Answer: Fire once only. Do Defending unit (s) always use their full strength regardless of facing? Answer: True Joe Geistwhite Jgeist@paonline.com
