3. Stacking a. The rules speak of ÔescarpŽÕ (rough) and ÔmontagneuxÕ (mountainous), but no such terrain appears on the terrain key. I suppose that ÔescarpŽÕ is what the terrain key calls Ôniveau 1Õ (level 1); and that ÔmontagneuxÕ is Ôniveau 2Õ (level 2)? b. Considering rule 12.3, is it generally the case that you may not examine opposing stacks, unless they are adjacent to a Dominant Position under your control? 3.2.1 ÒA ground unit belonging to a division may be stacked with ... ÔunitŽs blindŽsÕÓ Does ÔunitŽs blindŽsÕ for the purposes of this rule (stacking) mean both tankettes (chars) and armored cars (blindŽs)? The way that rule 4.3 is phrased (ÒChars, blindŽs, cavalerie et QGÓ), it is possible that chars and blindŽs are considered two different types of units. 4.1.1 Supply sources a. It seems that the hex numbers that define the friendly board edges are incorrect. Should the Republican board edges be 0500-2700-2731-1731? And the Nationalist board edges be 0300-0100-0128-1031-1331? Really important only for: b. Is hex 1531 a Nationalist supply source? c. Is hex 1631 a Republican supply source? 5. ÒA ground unit enters as a reinforcement via a friendly supply source hex.Ó Actually, several Nationalist reinforcements do not enter via supply sources (1/LV/40, 73/To/13, 1/Me/13, maybe XVII/Lg, 262/CT/13, and for the Republicans maybe the optional XIVth Brigade). 6.3 ÒBefore beginning an air combat, the Republican player announces if he will attempt to flee. If he does not attempt to do so, the Nationalist player may attempt it. ... If a flight attempt fails, players immediately resolve air combat.Ó If the Republican player attempts to flee, but fails, can the Nationalist player have his aircraft attempt to flee? 6.4 ÒDuring an air combat, players match up their engaged fighter and bomber units.Ó And if the players do not agree as to which aircraft will attack which? For example, suppose that the Nationalist player has 3 fighter units, A B and C. The Republican player has 2 fighters X and Y, and a bomber Z. The Nationalist player wants A to attack X, B to attack Y, and C to attack Z; but the Republican player wants X to attack B, and Y to attack C. Is the correct sequence: i. A fires at X, who does NOT fire defensively, but instead fires at B. B does NOT fire defensivley, but instead fires at Y. Y does NOT fire defensively, but instead fires at C. C does NOT fire defensivel, but instead fires at Z, who DOES fire defensively (being a bomber) (damage is inficted once everybody has fired)? OR ii.A fires at X, who fires back defensively; then X fires at B, who fires back defensively; then B fires at Y, who fires back defensively; then Y fires at C, who fires back defensively; then C fires at Z, who fires back defensively? Could get very bloody this way, as most of the fighters are essentially shooting twice, once at their chosen target and once defensively at whoever is attacking them. 8.2 Fifth bullet: Ôsuffered the loss of 50% of their total pre-battle combat FACTORSÕ, but rule 8.5 seems to indicate that it is 50% of their pre-battle STEPS, not factors. Is 8.5 correct and 8.2 incorrect? 8.4 Advance after combat. This rule indicates that victorious ATTACKING units may advance after combat, but says nothing about victorious defending units. Rule 8.5.3 indicates that victorious DEFENDING units may also advance after combat. Is rule 8.5.3 correct? 10.1.2 Passive Front artillery support. a) I donÕt entirely understand, for the Republican Vth Corps, is the 3 hex range traced: i) ONLY from hexes 0906 or 2416, OR ii) from any Ebro-adjacent hex between 0906 and 2416 inclusive? b) Likewise for the XVth Corps and 2417/1626. 13.1 Crossing the Ebro. Republican units may not cross below Benifallet (1626). Can they cross from 1625 to 1525 (1625 is above Benifallet, but 1525 is not)? 13.5 Amphibious assault. In the example, the hex numbers seem to be incorrect, as they would put the Nationalist unit on the NORTH bank of the Ebro, I suppose that it should in fact be in 2314? Also, shouldnÕt the attack have been resolved at 3:1, shifted 1 column left from 4:1 because of the Ebro? 14.1.3.1 Republican deployment. a. When a deployment is given as Ôbetween hexes A and BÕ, are hexes A and B included in the permitted deployment area? For example, may the 11th Division set up IN AND BETWEEN hexes 2221 and 2517, or only BETWEEN? b. 12e Brigade/45e Division Òsets up in any hex adjacent to the Ebro on the north bank between hexes 1628 and 1631Ó. Hex 1628 is not adjacent to the Ebro, should that be hex 1528? c. 42nd Division Òsets up in any hex adjacent to the Ebro on the north bank between hexes 0501 and 0607Ó. Hex 0607 is not adjacent to the Ebro, should that be 0506, 0507, 0608, or 0707? 14. The game lasts 11 turns, why are there 12 spaces on the turn track? 14.1.4 Republican reinforcements. a. The 16th and 27th Divisions are noted as entering at hex 2301, I suppose this should in fact be 2300, the board-edge road hex (& supply source)? b. Similarly, the 60th Division is indicated as entering in 2612, I suppose that should be 2712, also a board-edge road hex (& supply source)? 14.1.5.1 (very minor) Villalba in the rules becomes Villaba on the map (0816). Pandols on the victory points chart becomes Caballis (or Caballs) on the map (1319) 14.1.6.3 The Nationalist 105th Division Òmay enter this unit as a reinforcement by a hex between 0131 and 1531 ...Ó a. I assume that its entry should be between 0128 and 1531, since 0131 is somewhere under the terrain key? b. Are partial hexes such as 0228 playable? 14.1.6.5 Objectives for the Republican Vth Corps. a. Benisanet 2319 - this village is not on the map, should there be a village in hex 2319? b. Cavalls 1319 becomes Caballis (or Caballs) on the map. c. Pobla de Massalucca is given as 0411, on the map it is 0511. d. ÒNo Republican unit may cross the Ebro below Benifallet ... so long as all of the objectives of phase 1 are not controlled by the Republican side.Ó But Republican units cannot cross below Beinfallet anyway, per rule 13.1 (ÒNote that Republican units cannot cross the Ebro below Benifallet (river hexes 1525 to 1531)Ó). Is it intended that the rule 13.1 restriction is REMOVED once all phase 1 objectives are Republican-controlled? Terrain Effects Table, Dominant Position, the reference to 11.2.2 should be to 12.2. Turn track: arenÕt the factional flags reversed, with Nationalist flags marking Republican reinforcement turns and vice-versa? DesignerÕs Notes, several Nationalist abbreviations are not given (or may be incorrect). Some of these may have been corrected in the next issue of Vae Victis, which I do not have. 1T: ?? [4/1T/82 Colonial battalion] 1st Tabor? 2M: ?? [4/2M/82 Colonial battalion] B: ?? [XVI & XVII/B of the Legion, 12/B/50 battalion] - I suppose that the 12/B/50 battalion should be 12/Ba/50, part of the Badajoz Regiment? But what is the ÔBÕ for the legion? G: ?? [on several fighter and ÔATÕ units, e.g. 1-G- 2, probablement Groupe ou Gruppo?] MSM: ?? [MSM/74 Carlist battalion, probably a misprint for NSM?] TRF: ?? [TRF/13 Colonial battalion, probably should be TIF, the Tirailleurs dÕIfni] IX/Te (150th Division) [Probably the X/T 150 independent battalion]: X: ? [X/Al, X/T, and X/LA/150 battalions] Also, in the historical article you talk about the Repubicans getting a few vehicles across ÒbarragesÓ, which is dam in French. This is confusing - are these low earth dams, that the vehicles need to be winched across? Or are these fords? or ferries? Thanks for your time, IÕm looking forward to playing the game as the subject is of interest to me and has gotten so little attention (at least in the English-speaking wargaming world). Roy
