Clash of Giants Questions, Answers, and Comments Reference: Consimworld.com Q. Galicia unit scale and stacking: I thought Galicia was originally supposed to have a Corps-level OoB, but now all the units seem to be divisions. I'm happy with the result (the counter-density is still low enough), but would like to know why the change was made. Going back too far for detail, but basically divisions just worked better (and made the game turn less on just a few combats). Q. Also, is the odd stacking special rule 6.1 a remainder of the earlier scale? It says the stacking limit of infantry is two units per hex, but does not mention Corps-designations. Can I put three Russian infantry divisions in the same hex if two of them belong to the same Corps, as usual? No-the Battle Book rule is correct. Consider it a command limitation (physically you could obviously get MORE than 3 divisions in a hex, but the ability to effectively coordinate them on the east front at the start of the war is another matter). Q. Army boundaries in Galicia: It seems I can't find a rule that tells what happens to a unit that crosses an army boundary. I take it the rule 9.2 of First Ypres applies here as well and such units are simply marked with a done marker. Yes. Q. The map scale: The incorrect 3.3 miles/hex for the First Ypres can still be found on the back of the box, but the Battle Book has the correct 1.3 miles/hex - good. The box also has Galicia map scale as 8.8 miles/hex, while the Book says 9.0 miles/hex. Which one is correct? Not that it matters much, but curious minds want to know. Well my notes say 8.8, but given the distorting effect of the hex grid the difference is more apparent than real. Q. Historical Unit Abbreviations: Some explanations seem to be missing; I suppose Woy stands for Woyrsch, RN for Royal Naval division and the E in the German 4E division for Ersatz (or is it a typo and supposed to be R for Reserve?), Correct. Q. What does "Mar" stand for? Mar stands for "Marine Q. Counters: The unit marked as French 5th Cavalry Brigade should probably be a Division instead. Correct. Q. Also, it seems there are no units with Combat Strength numbers in parentheses that are not allowed to attack (even though the rules refer to them); the British Remnant counters should probably be among those (as the rules say they cannot attack), Yes. Q. What about the French Territorial units? In the Marne they couldn't attack, but now it seems they can - is this correct? Yes-by this point the French had got over their disdain for using 2nd and 3rd line troops. Q. Here's one more, though: Galicia Austrian Setup (3.12) says that no units may set up in Germany. But what about the Woyrsch LandWehr Corps? Didn't it operate from German soil, historically? Well it mobilized there before being moved to the Austrian left but to allow it to set up in Germany would offer too many gamey opportunities to try and get behind the Russians. Q. Must RR hexes be "friendly controlled"? Near Germany the RR is Russian -> so, must an Austrian unit move through the hexes to allow a supply link, or as the army flanks around, can they use the RR (1410, 1409, 1408, etc) for supply? My original intent was to not bother with "friendly control" assuming that if you can trace a line free of enemy ZOCs you can assume friendly units moved through at some point. But there do seem to be enough control markers that if you want to take the trouble of keeping track, you can go with "friendly controlled." Q. I am assuming that if i have 1 unit adjacent to two stacks, then I can attack just one stack - and ignore the other one. Yes. Q. For surrender on the East Front of OOS units--does one use their face value TER or the reduced by up to -2 OOS TER ?? I would assume its face value. Correct. Q. When the rules say that a unit may not move from one ZoC to another, this means from the ZoC of one enemy unit into the ZoC of another enemy unit? No, it also means from ZOC to ZOC of the same enemy unit. Basically if you start in an enemy ZOC you can only enter another in the same move by first entering a hex not in an enemy ZOC.(Or advance after combat and Emergency Withdrawal.) Q. 3.13 in the Playbook states that both Allied and German players place their ACM's for area D on the turn record track as marked on the counter. My counters do not look any different than the ACM's for areas "A - C". This leads me to ask when do you insert the Allied and German ACM's for area "D" into the cup for drawing? Turn 2 for the Allies, 4 for the Germans. Q. Two Russian Reinforcements are labeled "8th Army" on the counter (37th and 23rd Divisions both of the XVIII Corps)--was your original intention to have them arrive in the 8th army zone in Russia? On the map there is no town or city in Russia in that zone for them to arrive--there is only the "village" of Kamenets-Podolsk, or do they just arrive elsewhere in a Russian city or town?? They can arrive anywhere (ignore the "8th Army"-only Austrian 2nd Army reinforcements are restricted as to where they enter). Q. Can the Russian cavalry replacements come back with different armies? An eliminated 4th cavalry unit is stacked with a cavalry unit of the 8th army for instance? Yes. The army numbers of the units refer to their starting armies but you can freely shuffle units among the armies, and that includes replacements. Q. If a unit is in a fortification and is attacked, are two die rolls made for the defense? One for the unit and one for the fortification? Yes. Q. The only question we did not find a clear answer in the rules was about the cavalry replacements: what does it happen to a Cavalry Unit under a Repl marker, if it's attacked? It may not move or attack but it defends normally. To be clear (I had an e-mail on this) the Belgian attack restrictions apply the entire game. Albert wasn't going to risk his army after having lost almost all of his country. Any army that has an asterisk result that turn before you declare combat can't attack, but if you declare combat any army that has not yet been activated can't have an asterisk result yet, and so it may attack. And once you declare combat, any further asterisk results that turn are irrelevant. Units are free to move or attack across army boundaries (as long as you use the Done markers so that units don't activate twice, and remember that units in an army with a current asterisk result during your Combat phase can't attack). See 5.34, 5.35 and 9.1. Also remember that the AH get 1 VP for holding each of their VP hexes each turn after turn 3, up to a maximum of 8 VPs. (That may be how you played, but it isn't clear to me from the AAR.) I increasingly think if there is an imbalance in Galicia, my previous post on bidding for AH VPs to play the AH is the best solution, since it allows players to adjust the game to their own views on the matter. But I'll wait for more reports before making anything official. Arrggh, three more typos that slipped past that GMT will undoubtedly issue corrected counters for in the future. There is no German XXIX Corps at Ypres-that should be the XIX Corps. And the Mar division should have no corps designation (though historically it was attached to the XXVII Reserve Corps, it could have been added to any corps). Ted
