Date: Tue, 18 Jan 1994 12:51:44 EST From: "Gary J. Robinson" Subject: LONG WestFront Errata By popular demand, here is: WESTFRONT Errata (December 1993) MAP Sandbars/Shoals (omission). Groningen, Bremen, Esbjerg, and Venice are uninvadeable coastal hexes. Sea portions of these hexes should be dotted to indicate this. Straits (additions). Add crossing arrows from: Copenhagen - Malmo, Copenhagen - Rostock, Groningen - Bremen, Dover - Ipswitch, and Bordeaux - La Rochelle. The hexsides SE of Rotterdam, Stettin, and La Rochelle are sea hexsides. Hungary (addition). Add a RR connecting Gyor to Budapest. Italy (corrections). The Bolzano hex is in Italy, not Germany. Albania is considered part of Italy. The Sardinian town of Olbia is now a minor port. Terrain Clarifications: Cagliari NE1, Ajaccio, Ajaccio E1, Messina, Cassino, La Spezia, Parma, Budapest NE1, Sarajevo, and Salonika W1 are mountain hexes. Sarajevo W1 is a hill hex. Foggia is a clear hex. UNIT LABELS The British 3rd Corps (arriving Oct '44) is incorrectly printed in U.S. olive. Over-color it with orange marking pen. The German Ca valry, 82nd Fortress & 89th Fortress Corps units begin S'43 at 2 CV each. MARKERS The Soviet 4 Uk Front has orientation S3 (not S2), while 2 Uk has S2. (not S3). 1 Uk Front appears in hex D (not E ), and 2 Be in hex B (not A). See Rule 17.12. PLAY CHARTS Production. S'40 German Starting Product ion is 42 PPs (not 40). W'44 German Starting Production is 46 PPs (not 48) and Allied is 109 PPs (not 110). RULES 1.3 Terrain sidebar diagrams (clarification). The Hill terrain example is mislabelled "Rough". 1.41 Major Cities (clarification). Rome is an open city, providing ne ither Double Defense nor defensive DF. 1.5 Resource Centers (correction). There are seven (not six) resource centers: Lille, the Ruhr, Hanover, Metz, Saarbrucken, and Katowitz [minerals], and Gyor [oil]. 2.6 Special Units (clarifications). Fortress units can also move by Sea Movement. Tito needs HQ command to move. 8.33 Strategic Movement (correction). Units can disengage from battles by rail or sea movement, provided they are not the rearguard (the last unit remaining in the battle). 9.31 Rail Movement across Straits (clarification). A Rail Move ends at a straits, but units can continue rail movement beginning a new rail move on the other side. Rail lines do connect across the Straits of Messina and Denmark as shown (but not from Kiel-Odense or Rotterdam-Ostende). 10.6 Beachhead Supply: Example (correction). Units A and B are reversed in the diagram explanation text. 11.22 Basic Production (PPs) sidebar chart ( correction). Allied W'44 Basic Production should be 70 PPs (not 80). The Play Charts are correct. 11.23 City Production. Cities in Sea Supply (see 14.5) can produce PPs (however, without Naval Supremacy, Sea Supply is cancelled if either port is engaged.) 11.3 Unit Cost sidebar chart (corrections). Allied armor costs are 8 PPs/step and 16 PPs/cadre (not 4 and 8). Italian unit costs are the same as German. Only one German SS step may be rebuilt per month. 11.6 Disbanding Units (addition). During Production, players may voluntarily eliminate friendly units, but these cannot be rebuilt until the next Production. 12.0 Weather (correction). March always has Dry weather (the map is correct). All references to Mud weather in March should be changed to February. 12.22 Mud Weather Effects: Terrain. In Mud weather, Clear and Forest terrain are treated as Marsh, except that stacking is not reduced to 3 units per hex. 12.24 Mud Weather Effects: Combat. During Mud weather, all units fire SF offensively, and have Double Defense. The engagement limit for all hexsides is 1 unit. 13.27 Paradrop Terrain Effects (change). Airdropped Paratroops do not receive defensive terrain/city benefits unless they have a supply line. 14.1 Sea Area Control (correction). The Ligurian Sea has a Sea Interdiction value of 2 . The map is correct. 14.4 Sea Movement (correction). Substitute Palermo for Catania in sidebar Example 2 . 14.4 Sea Movement (clarification). Sea Movement and Sea Supply are not subject to Sea Interdiction, being automatic through friendly seas, and prohibited through enemy seas. 15.0 Invasions. IMPORTANT: Only one unit can invade a coastal hex per movment phase. Germany can Invade even though it has no Beachhead (but not Gibraltar or Benghazi: only Allied units can occupy these boxes, see 1.7). 15.12 Invasion Command ( clarification). The confusing reference to '15.13' should read 15.14. Under Naval Supre macy, Invasions may be made anywhere within two Sea Areas, but will not have combat support unless w ithin Invasion Command Range (double the Invasion HQ's CV). 16.11 Italian Surrender (clarification). Surrendered Italian units are permanently eliminated and cannot be rebuilt. 16.2 Oslo (addition). Oslo is an off-map 1PP Production City automatically controlled by Copenhagen. 17.4 Front Combat (change). Soviet Fronts may rebuild one step (2CV) per Production phase, even if engaged. SCENARIOS Husky (omission). Setup: For this introductory scenario only, the Germans can build in Reggio. Example of play: July I 1943 (correction). German unit X is out of supply once unit Z is eliminated (the RailHead becomes Reggio). It therefore should lose one step during the Allied Supply Phase, but it regains supply during July II, and could be rebuilt back to 1 CV during August Production with the leftover 3 German PPs. SUMMER '40: Starting Forces (corrections). German Starting Production should be 42 (not 40), and Neutral Production 6PPs (not 7). NOTE: Units not starting this scenario are not buildable. Scenario map: Cologne is incorrectly shown to be on the French side of the startline (the mapboard is correct). 1) Setup (omission). The Allies control Gibraltar, Tunisia, Malta, and Benghazi. Fortress units must be set up in the exact hexes noted (not adjacent). 2) Surprise (addition). During the first month (May), all Allied HQs are disrupted, and all German River and Air Assaults automatically succeed (no repulses are possible). 4) Command Problems (change). French HQs can only command the movement of French units, and British HQs of British units. Belgian & Dutch units can only be moved by an Allied High Command HQ. However, Allied units can receive combat support from any Allied HQ. Italian units can also be moved by the German High Command HQ. 4a) Supply Problems. To be supplied, French, Belgian and Dutch units must trace supply from Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam respectively, and these capitals must be in Rail/Sea Supply from London. (Exception: if Armistice is refused, French units can trace supply from London itself). 5) Vichy (change). The Allies may offer Armisitice once per game at any time. 8) Victory. Ignore Allied Cleared Port VPs in this scenario. SUMMER '43: Starting Forces: The Allied Handicap in this scenario should be -65, not -55. Reinforcexments: DELETE the US 7th Cps, which arrives in W '43 [December]. 1a) Historical Deployment (omission): The German 82nd and 89th Fortress units and the Cavalry unit start at 2 CV (their labels are incorrect). At least one Italian unit must set up in France, Yugoslavia, Albania, and Greece. 4) S'43 Overlord Buildup (addition): Allied VPs for Cleared Ports cannot exceed twice the number of Allied units in the North at the end of this scenario. E xample: The Allies begin with 14 Cleared Port VPs. They need at least 7 units in the North afte r November to keep them all. WINTER '43: Scenario Map: Corsica is Allied controlled. Reinfor cements (correction): ADD the US 7th Cps, arriving in DEC '43 (as per its unit label). 1) Setup ( clarification). German Paras begins this and all later scenarios grounded. 4) W'43 Overlord Buildup (addition): Allied Cleared Port VPs awarded cannot exceed the number of Allied units in the North . Example: If at the end of the scenario the Allies have 15 VPs worth of Cleared Ports but only 12 units in the North, they only receive 12 VPs. SUMMER '44: Starting Forces (corrections). The Alli es begin with 6 HQs (not 7) and with 2 BHs in "BH Prep" (omitted). Reinforcements: Delete t he Allied JUL '44 BH reinforcement. The German JUL '44 reinforcement is SS Mech (not SS Arm or). 2) Allied Naval/Air Supremacy (change). German HQ steps do not rise in cost to 20 PPs, but re main at 15 PPs (cadres 30 PPs) in S'44 and W'44, rising another 5 PPs (cadres +10 PPs) only i f the Germans lose Ploesti. WINTER '44: Starting Forces. German Production begins at 46 (not 48), and Allied Production at 109 (not 110). Allied Basic Production does not increase: the bracketed number should read [+0]. Setup. The Allies control all of Greece. 3) German Fuel Shortage (change). With Ploesti lost, German HQ steps cost 20 (not 25) PPs. 20.0 SECOND FRONT 20.0 General (omission). Allied Naval and Air Supremacy have effect only on the WestFront mapboard. 20.12 Units (clarificati on). The Soviet Paratroop unit begins all scenarios after W'41 eliminated but available for rebuildx ing. The Soviet Coastal Army is an amphibious unit with an associated BH, but is considered an infantry unit in Soviet Starting Forces charts. It does not fire DF on its own BH. 20.21 Weather/Initiative ( clarification). During Mud weather, all Clear and Forest terrain is treated as Marsh, except that stacking is unaffected (remaining 4 units per hex). 20.3 Command (addition). German WF HQs are disrupted if activated on the EastFront map. German EF HQs are disrupted if they are activated on the WestFront map west of the line Stettin-Berlin-Prague-Klagenfurt-Fiume. 20.4 Movement & Combat (clarifi cations). Units may move freely between the EF and WF maps. Allied Air Supremacy affects the movement of all German units that begin a Turn on the WF map. Neither Allied nor Soviet units may hexes occupied or controlled by the other. 20.6 Production (clarifications). German units from EF can be rebuilt on the WF map and vice-versa. The loss of Ploesti raises the cost of ALL German HQ steps by 5 PPs. 20.5 Sea Control (addition). Sea Interdiction values for EF Sea Areas are: Gulf of Finland (3), Gulf of Riga (2), Baltic (2), W. Black (2), E. Black (2), Sea of Azov (3). SOUTHFRONT: Campaigns in Europe and Africa, 1936-1943 is being prepared for Summer 1994 release.
