From: "Ted Kim (Random Dude)" Subject: Trial of Strength Errata Since more than one person has asked for it, I decided to type in the TRIAL OF STRENGTH errata. If anyone has anything more recent, please share it with the list. Alan, please pick up a copy for Grogard.com. -ted Ted H. Kim Email: tek@ficus.cs.ucla.edu UCLA Computer Science Dept. The issue also has Poland 1939 and Balkans 1941 scenarios. TRIAL OF STRENGTH - Errata (May 86) Despite the best laid plans of mice and men the following errata are brought to your attention. Those changes made since the August '85 errata are marked with an asterisk. MAP 1. The Ploesti oilwell (Rumania) is missing. You can imagine the Germans have placed it underground or that it has been levelled by Allied bombing. Alternatively, you can try your artistic flair and draw it in using a Rotring(TM) pen - good luck. *2. Only those hexes in Greece west of the rail line (exclusive) should be rough. Treat all others as broken. 3. The bottom edge of the map was unfortunately trimmed about 5mm too low. You will need to retrim it to a line running along the base of the words "Czechoslovakia" and "Moscow". COUNTERS 1. The 1st Hungarian infantry corps should be designated the 5th. 2. The 2nd Rumanian army HQ should be designated the 4th. 3. The step level on the back of the first counters of the 56th and 57th panzer korps should read "3" instead of "1". SITUATION MAP SHEET 1941 1. The German 17 Army didn't get a guernsey. It should be located in Army Group South (Poland) north-west of Lvov. READY REFERENCE CARD CRT. Change the "10" result of the "1-1.5" column to read "1/1R" instead of "1/2R". The CRT on the map is correct. *TEC. Delete the lines for River Transport and the "Supply Range Value" column. Change the MP costs for broken, rough and mountain terrain to read: Terrain Mot. Non.Mot. ---------------------------- broken 2 2 rough 3 3 mountain 5 4 *WEC. Change the "Supply Range" line to read: Clear Mud Snow Snow-freeze -------------------------------- 4 1 2 3 RULES Section 1.5 - change "CRT Combat Results Chart" to "CRT Combat Results Table". Section 2.2 - as the first counter sample is obviously an armoured unit amend its title to read "Example of an armoured combat unit". *Section 6.4 - Delete the paragraph headed "River Links". Substitute the following paragraphs headed "Motor Transport (MT) Links": MT Links/Supply Range. The last link in the supply chain is usually a motor transport link extending across country from the supply head to the unit. All units are assumed to have sufficient MT capacity to haul their own supplies out to a range of 4 hexes in clear weather. This supply range is reduced to 3 hexes in snow-freeze, 2 hexes in snow, and 1 hex in mud. Supply range is calculated from the supply head (exclusive) to the unit's hex (inclusive), regardless of terrain. However, it cannot be traced into or through terrain prohibited to ground units and, while it can trace into a mountain hex, it cannot trace through one. Each MTU extends the supply range for all units stacked with it by +2 hexes in clear, snow and snow-freeze, and by +1 hex in mud. Any number of MTUs can combine for this purpose. *Section 9.0 - Reaction Capacity/Movement. Substitute the following: Reaction Capacity. The controlling HQ can react any one stack. It must be within 3 hexes of the HQ; cannot include units in the combat hex; nor can it include any unit with a movement penalty. Reaction Movement. The normal movement restrictions apply. In addition, the reacting stack may "fan-out" and "drop-off" units, but may not "pick-up" or participate in any other combined movement. Reacting units may enter (to reinforce) the combat hex but may not move through it. Reacting units may not conduct attacks. The number of MPs that a reacting unit can expend is limited by the level of the attack: Small Force 2 MPs Stack 3 MPs Combined 4 MPs Reacting unit are not obliged to expend all the MPs available to them. However, regardless of how many they actually expend, reacting units accrue a movement penalty equal the maximum available for that level of attack. Example: even it a unit moved only 2 MPs it would automatically accrue a penalty of 4 MPs if it were reacting to a combined attack. *Section 14.3 - Amphibious Assaults. All amphibious assaults have to be "hot". If the beachhead is not occupied by enemy units, it is assumed to have an intrinsic garrison with a nominal combat value of one. (Delete all reference to "cold" assaults.) *Section 14.5 - delete (i.e. no more river transport). *Section 23.2 - Amend the first sentence to read "Each capital city or capital town ...". Also add "All friendly controlled coastal hexes have an intrinsic garrison of "one" but only for the purposes of amphibious assaults - see Section 14.3 (as amended)." Section 24.1 - At the end of this section add the following: "In the 1941, 1942 and 1943 scenarios the Soviet player sets up first. In the 1944 scenario the Axis player sets up first." Section 24.6 - unfortunately for the Soviets they only had 31 infantry armies, so amend the line to read "Inf Armies 31 (3 Gd)(-10)". That's why in Section 25.3 only 20 of the 22 Inf Armies are designated. Section 25.1 - At the end of the paragraph add "Unless specifically designated, listings of Soviet units will include both line and Guard". Section 25 - Under "Soviet forces" substitute "1 Baltic" for "Volkhov" HQ and "2 Ukrainian" for "Voronezh" HQ. Section 26 - in figure 4 the step level of the 57 Pz Korps should read "3" instead of "1". Credits - under "Development" change "Walden" to read "Waldon". My apologies Geoff. BLAME APPORTIONMENT In the true tradition of apportioning blame as far away from oneself as possible, blame for this errata is hereby laid at the feet of Messrs Wyche and Storey. "At their feet" because they still refuse to shoulder the burden of responsibility that rightly belongs with them. Their ridiculous claim that I was responsible for the final checking and proofing has been dismissed with the contempt it deserves. It was hoped to provide their signed confessions but alas their physical condition, after a week of gentle persuasion, was such as to preclude this. (picture of Dave O'Connor)
