Rod Coffey - 01:53pm Nov 13, 1998 PST (#170 of 190) OK I thought I undertood this but maybe not. I also may be missing something in the rules, but..... does 8.4.1, the American garrison requirement, remain in effect even after Gates is released? I had thought not, but realize now I may have assumed that. If it does remain in effect, then the effect of Gates' release is much less than I thought (just now getting around to FTF this). Another question, SITUATION: 1. a player plans to use a unit to attack in a close combat 2. other units are also selected to attack 3. rifle or arty defensive fire compels the unit to retreat with a one hex "R" result 4. the only legal retreat is into a hex that is still next to the target, the unit can retreat into this hex because it is woods and therefore no EN ZOC goes into the woods hex. Can the retreated unit, which is still next to the target hex, participate in the close combat attack? Is the answer different if #2 did not apply, i.e. if the retreated unit were the only unit selected to attack the hex in question? Thanks, I know this is a bit of a twister. I think what happens to non-phasing player units retreated into close combat hexes has been dealt with but not that of the phasing player. ------------------------- michael arrighi - 10:11pm Nov 13, 1998 PST (#171 of 190) [ Mark ] Questions on Saratoga 1) British Arty does ranged fire on an Am Arty causing a retreat. Per the rules, the Am Arty is capture, even though a Brit unit is not adjacent. Is this correct? (And yes it did happen). 2) Can a single stack of units move adjacent and then declare "diversion" combat, and not attack (or 4 units move against 2 units and declare a diversion against one unit, and then only 3 of the units are able to attack the other unit - becausing one unit from the phasing player is only facing the stack of enemy units with the diversion declaration). Thus, is it possible for a single (or more) units to move adjacent to an enemy unit/stack and not attack as the hex they are facing is the one selected for the diversion? 3) When do morale effect take place. An army takes a "D" loss and subsequent AM point loss, which then changes its morale modifer to -1. Does this effect take place immediately and, therefore, before the other units undergoing morale checks? If no, does this effect take place before subsequent rounds of combat? ------------------------- michael arrighi - 10:23pm Nov 13, 1998 PST (#173 of 190) [ Mark ] One other question: any limit to the number of momentum chits that may be burned - as the Brits with 2 momentum chits, I rolled a natural 1 then did a reroll, it was also a 1, so then I did another reroll. Is this allowed? ------------------------- Andy Lewis - 07:44am Nov 14, 1998 PST (#175 of 190) [ Mark ] Developer of Saratoga and follow-up Brandywine Creek "does 8.4.1, the American garrison requirement, remain in effect even after Gates is released? ANSWER: The key to these questions is that Rifle and Artillery fire occurs before Close Combats are assigned. So in both cases those units must attack unless they divert. YES, THE ALTERNATIVE WOULD BE TO CONSIDER THEM ELIMINATE WHICH IS WHAT WOULD REALLY HAPPEN BUT THE EFFECTS ARE THE SAME. NO, ALL UNITS MUST ATTACK. DIVERSION JUST ALLOWS THE EXCLUSION OF SOME ENEMY UNITS FROM HAVING A CLOSE COMBAT AGAINST THEM. THE COLUMN SHIFT REPRESENTS THE MANPOWER DRAIN WHICH WAS CAUSED BY THE DIVERSION. 3) When do morale effect take place.
