From: nicklaw@cix.co.uk (Nicholas Law) Subject: Mason-Dixon questions Hello Alan Here's some Q+A sent to me by Chris Perello, designer of Mason-Dixon (Command issue 35). I am prouder of that game than anything else I've ever worked on, for exactly the reasons you state. I think I could have clarified/simplified the pocket rules a bit, but I was pleased with a game driven by unit differences rather than special rules, etc. On to your questions (my answers in ALL CAPS): Counters: The CSA 1940 code 'F' air unit with air combat 7 and ground attack 0 has a range of zero. I've been treating this as if it should be 6. Is this correct? NO, THE "0" IS CORRECT. TREAT IT AS A POINT DEFENSE FIGHTER I.E. IT STAYS IN ONE HEX ONLY) 7.3 (Corps markers) The errata says the last sentence should read: The marker always counts as one unit for stacking purposes regardless of the number of units in it. Does this mean: i) units in the corps markers off-map box don't count against the stacking limit. Therefore any number of units can effectively stack in a hex with a corps marker, and by implication, attack and defend; or ii) units in the corps marker box count against stacking, with the marker itself counting as one more unit? In this second case, doesn't this breach rule 7.1 which says markers don't count against stacking. FAIR ENOUGH. THE IDEA IS THE MARKER REPRESENTS ALL (OR SOME) OF THE UNITS IN THAT AND THE SURROUNDING HEXES. IT NEVER AFFECTS HOW MANY UNITS CAN FIGHT (THAT'S DRIVEN BY THE TEC) OR STACK (UNLIMITED ANYWAY). ITS INTENDED AS BOTH A CONVENIENCE AND A HIDDEN UNIT AID. 9.4 (Dice) says: -1 for attacking, firing artillery unit; and -1 for a blitz air strike. Are these cumulative, i.e. -2 for two artillery units? YES. 9.8 (Exploitation) says: A unit with a '+' next to its MR may 'drag' any units stacked with it along. Does this mean it can drag: i) the one unit it is supporting per 12.2; YES ii) all units in its hex that took part in the attack; or YES iii) all units in its hex, including reserves? YES. COOL, HUH?! 12.2 (Supporting units) The last sentence says that a supported unit temporarily 'inherits' the supporting units MR for exploitation should the supporting unit be eliminated. Does it also inherit its unit-dragging capability from rule 9.8? NO. Enjoy, let me know if you have any other questions. Chris
