From The Wargamer, Vol.1, no.30 Kirovograd - Errata and Clarifications 1. Turn Record Track The shading on the German Turn Record Track is incorrect. As shown on the Russian Turn Record Track, it is the even turns that should be darker shaded and are the night turns. 2. Rule 24.4 (clarification) Reinforcements are not required to "line up" off-board on an imaginary series of hexes. All may enter the same map-edge hex at no movement point cost above that of the hex itself. 3. Rule 28.11 ( clarification) The only units which may conduct AA fire are those in a hex under attack by air units giving offensive ground support, or those adjacent to and attacking a hex to which air units are giving defensive ground sup port. HQ and artillery units may only use their better AA capability themselves; they may not impart it to other friendly units. When using the CRT for AA fire, the player conducting the AA fire is considered the attacker, even though in this case he may be the non-phasing player. 4.Rule 31.2('Endgame' scenario) i) There are two references to the Russian 25th Gds Rifle Corps. The first of these should refer to the 24th Gds Rifle Corps. ii) The reference to the German 2nd Panzer Div. should read 2nd Parachute Div. KIROVOGRAD Questions and Answers Designer Jack Radey has supplied the following answers to questions about Kirovograd from S J Hagarty and his group. 1. When units are surrounded and cut off, then forced to retreat, would it be OK if they retreated onto a HQ instead of being eliminated (subject to stacking restrictions) and the pocket eliminated when the HQ is eliminated? JR: Questions 1 through 6 are all re-design suggestions--as such I think they are all good, although #4 might be better to triple ammo expenditure for double effect. In general I favor gamers looking on games as something to freely adjust to suit their tastes. These work best if based on sound knowledge of what is being re-designed. 2. Concerning German armored recon. units, when conducting an armed recon. could they have automatic mobile orders instead of what their formation has? JR: See #1. 3. Are there any circumstances which while moving through enemy ZOC you would trigger a counter-attack by units in Reserve within 2 hex range? JR: I like it, but suspect it's a potential can of worms. 4. Could artillery units double their barrage strength at the expense of double supply cost? JR: See #1. 5. Concerning stacking, how about a rule for the number of combat factors per hex rather than number of units? I would suggest 12 to 15 points/hex. What are your thoughts? JR: Actually, I suspect organization and administration is more crucial than bodies/guns/vehicles per square meter--but I am never easy with any stacking rules entirely. Try and see. There should be some stacking advantage to being part of the same formation. The Germans were more flexible about regiments and battalions than Soviets were. 6. If a German armored recon. unit is attacked, would it have an automatic retreat option and not engage as long as it had more movement points than the attacker? JR: One reason for avoiding rules like this is to avoid an over-complicated system. Otherwise it's OK. 7. While on Mobile orders, why do the Germans have options in the combat matrix and the Russians don't? JR: Better communications, and greater flexibility, also reflects somewhat better German supporting weapons. 8. When non-motorized deployed artillery is stacked by itself and attacked, shouldn't it have automatic defend orders to simulate its unmobile status and not be able to retreat without taking casualties or leaving equipment behind? JR: Good--should be added to rules. Or how about any deployed artillery (motorized or non-motorized) that is forced to retreat due to an attack by adjacent enemy non-artillery units automatically loses 50 percent strength (round down). 9. Any suggestions on simove/impulsed movement system for the game? JR: Yes use three games and a referee--play by telephone--strong refereeing--false intelligence, etc, strongly recommended. Include air recon., what have you. I suspect the Soviets learned of the location of 47th PzKorps (XLVII, OK, OK) HQ by partisans/radio interception or something. Just a thought, this will help with units suddenly appearing where unexpected.
