Fast, simple, not expensive, little errata, but only reasonably fun. (War game Review)

In his review on BoardGameGeek, Brendan Whyte first turns a critical eye towards the components and rules and lists their shortcomings. Game play fares better: “…the game is fast and quite fun”. Whyte then goes into comprehensive details covering game mechanics and spares no criticism for the game opponent (AI). His discussion concerning solitaire board games vs solitaire computer games is very interesting.

CENTRAL AMERICA: is a comprehensive, dynamic simulation that encapsulates the multiple elements of modern land & air combat.. Both Conventional & Guerilla Warfare are in a combined in a fluid, interactive game system.. Players choose for themselves the intensity of the game and the level of detail involved. Four Introductory Scenarios teach the basics of the game. Five intermediate Scenarios offer a night's play. Seven Campaign Scenarios cover the vast potential of war in Central America, from the historical fall of Somoza, to a US invasion of Nicaragua, to World War III. SCENARIO GENERATION SYSTEM: The heart of the game lies in the nine basic scenarios based on superpower (US and USSR) perceoptions of the region. The USA options for its doctrice are Non-Intervention, Monroe Doctrine, and Aggressive Support, while the Soviet Union may espouse Non-Intervention, the Brezhnev Doctrine, or Adventurism. With this system the ramifications of the competing philosophies and doctrines can be understood and studied.

The Nicaraguans have an SS-20 loaned by kindly Comrade Bear: the US must go all out! Relief reigns when the "...2/75 Rangers take the airfield, secure the missile, and destroy the launcher. That's pretty ninja."

"If you blow this one, poor Ollie North is gonna have to sell way more TOW missiles to Iran." Brad goes for some bloody Contra vs. Sandinista action with Victory Games' Central America. It hangs on the insurgents, of which Brad comments "...I have never seen a game that handles these types of units with such simple but appropriate rules."
