READER MAIL =========== Here it is! These are unsolicited comments and questions from Simulations Online readers. This section is a forum for reader mail and comments regarding wargaming, or the newsletter itself. Feel free to send any questions for this column directly to me and I'll do my best to answer them or will find someone who can. --------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Dan Corrin Hi Peter, I really enjoyed the first Issue of the Magazine. Just a quick note to let you know. -Dan Dan Corrin, System Manager, Mechanical Engineering, UWO, London, Ontario --------------------------------------------------------------------- I greatly enjoyed Simulations Online! and hope the future issues will be as interesting. Thanks for taking the time to put all of this together. -Shelley Louie shelley@lurnix.lurnix.com slouie@ocf.berkeley.edu --------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Simulations Online Magazine v1n2 Great idea. I really enjoyed it. As a sometimes gamer it's great. Too much traffic in rec.games.board to read. Keep it up. Do you have a mailing list subscription ? Add me if so. Tom Shott INTeL, 5200 Elam Young Pkwy, Hillsboro, OR 97124, (503) 696-4520 toms@ichips.intel.com OR toms%ichips.intel.com@csnet.relay.com277100%) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hi Tom, I don't have a mailing list, but Simulations Online is posted on a monthly basis to The GEnie Information Network, Compuserve, America Online (PC and MAC), and Usenet (in the rec.games.board newsgroup.) We also have people uploading the newsletter to BIX and Delphi as well as to local BBS systems around the country (world?) If you ever fail to find an issue or would like a back issue, just let me know (also see Anthony's letter below.) Thanx, Peter --------------------------------------------------------------------- From: neil@progress.COM (Neil Galarneau) Subject: Thank you! Peter, Thanks for doing Simulations Online. It is a great "magazine" with lots of useful information. Keep up the good work! Neil neil@progress.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments on June SO: It was interesting, but there were some formatting problems in Mark Herman's article (The lines were exactly 79 characters long, even if they split in the middle of words!) Also, I thought the games auction transcript was a waste of space. Maybe listing the final bids would have been okay, but I really have no interest in: ><[RobinRoberts] R.ROBERTS10> $21 > $22 ><[Rob] R.ROBBERSON1> $25 > $26 ><[Rob] R.ROBBERSON1> $30 ><[RobinRoberts] R.ROBERTS10> $32 ><[Rob] R.ROBBERSON1> $35 > ><[Peter S.] DIPLOMACY-1> SOLD for $35 to Robbie Robberson!! and I doubt many other people did either. All in all, though, keep up the good work! ^.-.^ Mark Purtill purtill@dimacs.rutgers.edu(908)932-4580 (O) ((")) DIMACS, P.O. I listed the auction as I did to show people how the bidding went. In other words, if the bidding was hot, then the game obviously has collector value. If only one or two people bid, its popularity is in question, or the minimum price was too high. But I understand your comment and in the future I'll simply post the game, opening and closing bids, and the winners name. See the next letter regarding the formatting problem. Thanx! Peter --------------------------------------------------------------------- I enjoy reading your Simulations Online Magazine. One comment about v1 #3: it seems the formatting could use some work. The lines were apparently broken on the 80-column boundary without regard to line content. Words were broken across lines at arbitrary points without using any hyphenation. At least, that's how it appeared to this USENET reader. -ted Ted Kim Internet: tek@penzance.cs.ucla.edu UCLA Computer Science Department Los Angeles, CA 90024 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hi Ted, I received a couple of complaints regarding the format of the last issue uploaded to UseNet. It appears that the Portal editor doesn't accept as many characters per line as the commercial networks do. No problem, I've changed the margin setting on my word processor and all future issues should come through just fine with no more than 72 characters per line. Thanx! Peter --------------------------------------------------------------------- To: Xorg@cup.portal.com Subject: Simulation Online I have just discovered Simulation Online, it is a great addition to the hobby. Would you please e-mail issues 1 & 2 to me. If I can think of something worth writing I will let you know. BYW I have just acquired HORNET LEADER and the graphics are stunning (as expected from Roger) and the system is very interesting. Thankx, Norm Stewart stewart@starbase.mitre.org - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hi Norm! Issues 1 & 2 should be in your hands now, if not let me know and I'll send them out ASAP. See Anthony's letter below regarding a Usenet archive site for Simulations Online issues. And thanks for the comments on Hornet Leader, I'll be sure to pass them along to Gene Billingsley and the gang at GMT Games! Thanx, Peter --------------------------------------------------------------------- Peter, I run an archive site, eklektik.cs.pitt.edu, and I'd like to archive your magazine- I've got the last issue (#3) but would be really glad if you could send me the first two. Feel free to suggest people ftp back issues from eklektik.cs.pitt.edu in the "boardgames/sol" directory. Thanks, Anthony Kapolka anthony@cs.pitt.edu - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hi Anthony, Thank you! All issues of Simulations Online from issue nr. 1 will be sent along to you as soon as I re-edit them to get of the UseNet formatting problem. And my deepest thanks for providing this service to others on the network! Thanx, Peter --------------------------------------------------------------------- By chance, I got hold of a copy of Simulations Online Magazine. It is stated that it is monthly uploaded to Usenet. Since I have never come upon it, I would like to ask what newsgroup it's in. (Another possibility is that you do not use 'world' distribution. That would be sad, since outside America it's even harder to get up to date information about games and releases.) Thanks in advance. I knew that a lot of people were reading Simulations Online given the feedback in my e-mailbox, but I didn't know how far it was being circulated! Many thanks to Markus for letting me know my error in distributing Simulations Online to "North America" instead of "World." I have also gotten mail from wargamers in Sweden, England, and Australia, be assured that all future issues will sent around the globe! (After I reformat the previous issues, I'll re-upload them as a service to my foreign readers. Thanx, Peter
