From: Lglasttn@aol.com Subject: Suggested Rules For "Paths of Glory" Suggested Rules Changes For 'Paths of Glory' Let me make it clear: I love 'Paths of Glory'. I don't think I've been so utterly hooked on a board game for a long time. But even that has not stopped me from experimenting with some house rules, especially to conteract a certain pro-Allied slant in the game. Which all WWI games seem to have; of course, the CP was just plain historically weaker than the Allies, and their course of war far less forgiving of mistakes. Setup: The BEF in Brussels does not set up entrenched. The German 6th Army in Strasbourg and the A-H 4th Army in Przemysl do set entrenched. The German Corps in Insterberg may, at player's option, set up in Koingsberg space instead. Card play: The entire discard deck is reshuffled each turn. Try this - it adds more suspense to the game. Be forewarned; if you play a lot of POG, you may be needing a new deck before too long. Additional turns : Do all your games end without a doughboy in sight, and Lenin still cooling his heals in Zurich? That's been my experience; the game ends with Russia just beginning to collapse, and the USA marker still fixed on 'Neutral'. If so, try making your summer turns two turns long, which would therefore be 'Summer A' and 'Summer B'. 11.2 Trenches: Use optional rules giving credit to previous entrenchment attempts. All British armies may entrench to Level 1 from the start of play. However, should British units be stacked with any other nationality (excluding Belgians in Calais, Ostend and Amiens) in a non-setup trench space before an 'Entrenchment' card is play as an Event, the effects of that trench are ignored. 14. 0 Supply: Any capital can give supply to that nations corps-sized units. Sofia provides supply for Bulgarian units only. Damascus, Monsul, Medina and Bagdad can provide supply for Turkish corps only. Constantinople provides supply for all Turkish units, or any CP corps. Rationale. Com'n - Paris can't supply a corps but Sofia can? More importantly, this makes Turkey harder to kill. All Turkish units don't just disappear by just occupying Constantinople. This reflects one outstanding strength of the Turkish soldier; like the Serbian, he was used to a highly spartan life, and could do with very little. 17.1 Replacements: The CP player may transfer one Replacement point per turn to any other CP nationality, as long as he may trace supply form a German supply source to that country's capital. The Allied player may transfer one British Replacement Point per turn to Russia, if both Constantinople and Gallipoli are Allied controlled. Cards: Russian mobilization plan: The army or armies received at play of the first Russian Reinforcement card may be placed in Warsaw. Sud Army: As part of play of this card, one or two German corps may be SR from the Reserve Box to space containing any in-supply AH army. This still counts the card as an Event, not a SR. 11th Army: After this card is played, 11th German Army effectively becomes any nationality the CP player indicates, at both the moment of Activation as well as at time of combat. (Makes these cards much more useful!) Solitaire suggestion: Peace offers. If the player, acting as one side, makes a peace offer to the other side, it will be accepted (with the result of a drawn game) under the following circumstances: VP Level: Accepted on die roll: 1 - 3 1 - 4 4 - 5 1 - 3 6 - 7 1 - 2 8 - 9 1 11-12 1 : Roll again; 1-3 accepted, 4-6 rejected 13-15 1 - 2 16-17 1 - 3 18 + 1 - 4 If offer is rejected, go to the Peace Term Tables to see if the offering side can increase/decrease the VP level.
