Volko F. Ruhnke - 07:19pm May 11, 2001 PST (#5903 of 5914) Pushing more pikes -- now at Lützen, 1632 I liked MONMOUTH too. Easier to bite off than WV, as mentioned, and a fluid situation to boot -- a little gem, really. I felt that it played more effectively if you allow units to recover from disorder while in woods. Allan J Rothberg - 08:32pm May 11, 2001 PST (#5904 of 5914) Volko, Hmm, interesting take. But, while units in woods are certainly in cover, they are also more difficult to get into any semblence of an organized formation, depending on the density of the woods. Volko F. Ruhnke - 04:41am May 12, 2001 PST (#5905 of 5914) Pushing more pikes -- now at Lützen, 1632 More difficult, but clearly not impossible -- even in the brambly morasses of New Jersey, I'll wager. With the change, troops still get disordered when they move into woods, so there remains a distinct disadvantage for the attacker, particularly if he's in a rush. But if there is no defense, the rules change does allow the moving force to trim its lines, as would be possible even in woods. To get really controversial, here are all the changes I played with: --Units rally normally in woods. --Artillery is never enfiladed for Fire Combat purposes (the effect here should not be nearly as dramatic for a two-gun battery as for a line of 100 infantrymen). --Colonists' leaders set up with any units at the beginning of the game (can't remember why this was needed). --For LOS, troops are 1/2 level high; woods a full level high (I think this had something to do with trees being much taller than people). And now the really radical stuff: --Convert Fire table results to the following... M = M D = 1 + M D/R = 1 + M + M R = 2 + M + M --Colonists get only 1 VP per British SP loss suffered. These were because I didn't like the feel of having SP losses to fire depend so much on the target already being disordered (I didn't see why a disordered target would be so much easily to hit with musketry, and thought that morale should have a greater impact on maintaining order). The above revisions do cause more losses (an unrealistically high leve, some may object) so the VP schedule for the Colonists must be tweaked (I found I had the colonists winning too often due to British casualties). Anyhow, just some home-baked apple pie for you....
