"Belleau Wood" by Historical Alternatives, 1980 -- Suggested Optional Rule. by William Thomas Sherman wts@gunjones.com "Belleau Wood" is a great game, but seriously marred by the too powerful effect of artillery, and which decimates troops all TOO easily. To correct this, whenever using artillery on the Fire Table and a "DE" results, roll a 1-6 die again. If the number is ODD retain and apply the "DE" result; but if an EVEN number comes up, make use instead as the fire result next, in the same odds column, in least impact, e.g. DC, then DS, given on that fire odds column. Alternatively, a second approach worth trying is that when an EVEN number comes up on the (above mentioned) second die roll, make the "DE" instead "1/2 DE" with only HALF the total defending strength removed; with fractions rounded up. Roll then a third time, and the remaining stack becomes "DC" on an ODD die roll, or "DS" on an EVEN roll. This, by comparison with my original suggested optional rule, makes for a less dramatic change to the "DE" results; and for that reason some will find preferable.
