From: bkmartin26@aol.com Subject: [BCML] BC DYO Working on a Design Your Own system ... here's a draft version: Players using the Design Your Own (DYO) system will do so knowing that these rules are not meant to recreate actual battles, but to create "on-the-fly" scenarios where neither side knows what the other will do until the game starts. POINT VALUES Players "buy" units for their side, with the following point values for each unit type: 1) Infantry = 10 points per unit 2) Artillery = 20 points per unit (30 points per unit if Horse Artillery) 3) Cavalry = 30 points per unit 4) General = 40 points per unit (may only be purchased at a rate of one per every four regular units purchased) TERRAIN POINT VALUES Players also "buy" terrain tiles that they may place during the Terrain Placement Phase: 1) Waterway = 5 points 2) Woods = 10 points 3) Fence (2 sides) = 15 points 4) Hill = 20 points 5) Building = 30 points 6) Rough = 40 points Note that the following cannot be purchased: Orchard, Bridge, "Loop" waterway, "Lake" waterway, 1-sided Fence, 3-sided Fence The DYO rules are separated into phases, as follows: 1) Unit Purchase Phase 2) Terrain Purchase Phase 3) Terrain Placement Phase 4) Mutual Terrain Agreement Phase 5) Setup Phase UNIT PURCHASE PHASE: Each side receives 200 points that it can use to purchase units. This number may be higher or lower if both players agree to a higher or lower limit. A nice, average, force of 8INF, 2ART and 2GEN can be purchased with 200 points. Each side keeps their purchases noted on a piece of paper. These are kept secret until the Setup Phase. TERRAIN PURCHASE PHASE: First, the terrain tiles must be separated into two, equal piles. Each pile consists of: 13 Wood/Hill tiles 3 Building/Curved Waterway tiles 2 Field/Rough tiles 3 2-Sided Fence/Straight Waterway tiles The following tiles are set aside and cannot be purchased. They may be used if both players agree in the Mutual Terrain Agreement Phase: Bridge/Lake Waterway tile 3-Sided Fence/Loop Waterway tile Orchard/Straight Waterway tile 1-Sided Fence/Straight Waterway tile Players are then allocated 100 points to spend on the terrain tiles of their own choosing. This number can be adjusted up or down at the mutual agreement of the players. Terrain purchases are kept secret until the Terrain Placement Phase. TERRAIN PLACEMENT PHASE Players now begin alternating the placement of terrain tiles, with the DEFENDER going first. The first player to place a Waterway tile gets to determine the configuration of the waterway. His opponent must immediately give him any Waterway tiles that he has purchased. The player then places every Waterway tile until a they have all been placed. The waterway tiles must be connected in a continuous "stream" or "river". Direction is not important, so long as all Waterway tiles are placed, and they all form a continous "stream" or "river". The "middle row" (Row 5) of tiles may not contain any terrain other than a Waterway tile. Players may place terrain anywhere on the map other than Row 5. A player is not restricted to his own "side" of the board when placing terrain. MUTUAL TERRAIN AGREEMENT PHASE After all purchased terrain is placed, the players may agree on using any of the eight terrain tiles that are not available for purchase, subject to the following: 1) The player who placed the Waterway tiles may not choose the Bridge. Only the player who was forced to surrender the Waterway tiles may choose for the Bridge to be in play. SETUP PHASE At this point, both players may begin setting up their purchased units, with the ATTACKER placing his units first. When all the units have been placed, each player must reveal his purchases sheet to the other player for pre-game verification. Once verification is complete, the game may begin. Players can determine Victory Conditions (if they want terrain-based or objective-based VC) at this time, as well. I hope that this system will be attempted by someone. I welcome all comments, questions and complaints. Thanks, Brien -------------------------- eGroups Sponsor -------------------------~-~> eLerts It's Easy. It's Fun.
