I have spent some time investigating the Combat Results Table, and found that it could be improved a lot using two simple suggested Die Roll Modifiers: [12.25.1]: +1 if your firepower is at the upper limit of the firepower column, [12.25.2]: -1 if your firepower is at the lower limit of the firepower column. The effect of these additional drm is to smoothen the loss factors average, lfa, as a function of the firepower, lfa(fp). Example 1: If a force with 8 fp attacks a 7 fp, there is a difference of 5.7 to 3.8 lfa in favor of the 8 fp force. Example 2: A 10 fp attacking a 5 fp would have the same expected outcome, due to the unsmootheness of the lfa(fp) curve. Example 3: If a 19 fp attacks an 11 fp, there is a 8.1 to 7.0 advantage to the larger force. Example 4: A 15 fp attacking a 14 fp would have the same advantage. If my suggested drm are applied, the differences are changed to Ex-1: 5.3/4.2, Ex-2: 6.2/3.4, Ex-3: 8.7/6.6 and Ex-4: 7.7/7.5 respectively, a much more smooth lfa(fp) curve, at a tiny cost in increased difficulty for the players. The same positive effect could be achieved using 19 columns instead of 7 columns in the CTR, but my suggestion is better IMHO. (This message also appears in talk.consimworld.com 30YW subgroup)
