From: mab@dst17.wdl.loral.com (Mark A Biggar) Subject: Kingmaker: Second Variant Card Set General Vol 20 No 4 "The Hazard of the Draw -- New Options and Events for Kingmaker" by Tim Williams Page 41 The event cards described in this article are NOT available from AH and AH has said they have no plans to produce them. If you have bought the first expansion cards set you have just enough blank cards to hand produce this second set. Because it is getting very hard to find this copy of the General, I am going to go into detail about the new cards and optional rules. Optional Rules. 1) event deck shuffling on Embassies 2) Random initial placement of royal hiers Scrambles up standard opening strategies by randomly placing the heirs after factions are set up and nobles are places on the board. Use the following table to place the heirs RANDOM HEIR PLACEMENT TABLE Heir Die range = location King Henry 1-3: London, 4-5: Windsor, 6: Bristol Margaret 1-2: Coventry, 3-4: Newark, 5-6: Conway Edward of Lancaster 1-2: Kenilworth, 3-4: Lancaster, 5-6: Bamburg Richard of York 1-3: York, 4-5: Fotheringhay, 6: Shrewsbury Edward of March 1-2: Harlech, 3-4: Plymouth, 5-6: Carisbrooke Edmund of Rutland 1-2: Ireland, 3-4: Baumaris, 5-6: Dover George of Clarence 1-2: Cardigan, 3-4: Norwich, 5-6: Newcastle (town) Richard of Gloucester 1-2: Calais, 3-4: Carlisle, 5-6: Swansea 3) Ireland and Refuge At this time Ireland had no central government, so just about anyone could get refuge there. So Ireland doesn't require a refuge card to enter or stay and fighting is allowed, but see the next two optional rules. 4) Dublin Add Dublin as a Major city (300 troops) and port in Ireland. Dublin does NOT count in parliament and parliament may not be called there. If Edmund starts out in Ireland put him in Dublin. The Lt. of Ireland gets free access to Dublin unless occupied by opposing forces, anyone else must capture it by siege. 5) Irish Troops Use the blank crown deck card to create a new force of 50 mercinary troops "Irish Kerns". Like the French Merc card it is not shuffled into the crown deck until after the initial draw. When drawn the card is placed at the side of the board by Ireland. These troops can only be picked up by the Lt. of Ireland who must go to Ireland personally to get them. The card is worth 50 troops outside of Ireland only, it has no value inside Ireland because it is considered part of the Lt's extra 200 troops he already has there. If the Lt is killed or the "revolt in Ireland" event happens the card is immediately placed in the discard pile. NEW EVENT CARDS 1) Plague in Dublin Only used if you add Dublin to the Game. Additional card markings: 2-1 victory, Killed: Pole 2) Mercs Go Home SAXONS Why not? Additional Markings: 3-1 victory, Killed: Clifford, Mowbray, Stanley All the four following religious event cards are white upper left with a big red cross and pink in the lower right. 3) Religious Diet A meeting of all English Clergy is held according to the die role 1-2: Slaisbury, 3-4: Wells, 5-6: St David's. King's peace in that square for one round just like after parliament. Additional Markings: 2-1 victory, Killed: Roos, Percy 4) Heresy All Clergy must return to their home dioceses to put down new heretical teachings. Additional Markings: 5-4 victory, Killed: Bouchier, Hastings 5) Papal Diet All Clergy get a free one way trip to the continent to meet with the Pope. No Refuge is necessary. All must attend even if under siege. No ships necessary to go, but you must provide your own transport back. No fighting on the continent, including Calais, for one round after the diet. Additional Markings: Majority victory, Killed: Greystoke, Grey 6) Excommunication You blew it and the Pope came down hard. Your faction is now under the following restrictions: a) All religious offices and town cards held by the faction are returned to crown deck. b) If you are in a city you just lost to the deck, you are immediately thrown out into the surrounding square. c) No member of your faction may enter a city or town with a cathedral or the squares containing Slaisbury, Wells or St David's. Thus no corniations can be performed. These restrictions continue until you draw a town or religious office from the crown deck at the end of a turn. Additional Markings: Bad Weather Delays attack The following four cards are Embassy style cards with Blue at the upper left and pink lower right 7) Royal Visit King to Ireland The sole king is moved to Ireland (to Dublin if available and not occupied). The whole stack with him may go, but no boats are provided for the return. Additional Markings: 3-2 victory, Killed: Neville 8) Royal Hunt The king wants to go hunting. He and any Nobles that want to go with him are moved to forest square containing half of the small town of rotherham (one square west of Audley's Tickhill castle). If there are 2 kings roll a die: 1-2: Lancaster goes, 3-4: York goes, 5: both go!, 6: it rains nobody goes. Fighting is allowed in this square. Additional Markings: 3-2 victory, Killed: Holland, Grey, Scrope 9) Royal Heir Escapes The lowest ranking heir held by the drawing faction escapes to the nearest neutral town, city or royal castle. This may be on an island. The heir will not escape if he is KING or is the senior surviving heir of his family. Additional Markings: 4-1 victory, Killed: Stanley, Stafford 10) Treaty With France King to Continent The sole King goes to France and signs a treaty. Calais is immune to the "French Siege" card as long as the treaty in in effect. Calais is restored to English control is already lost but now belongs to the Kings faction. The Kings faction also gets unlimited access to the continent. The treaty remains in effect until one of the following events: a) The king dies. b) a "French Raid" Event c) a "War in Europe" (see below) d) a "Scots Invasion" (see below) Additional Markings: 3-1 victory, Killed: Beaufort, Cromwell, Boucher The following cards are new random events to spice up the game. 11) Mercenary Strife In any square continuing a stack that contains more then one merc card the smallest merc card goes home. The Irish Kerns are not effected. Additional Markings: Majority victory, Killed: Audley, Talbut 12) Mutiny One card for each of the following ships: Le Nicholas, Le Swan, Le Micheal, Le Rose & Le Lucas). When a ship's card is drawn it is removed from the board and the ship card is returned to the crown deck. If the ship is at sea its passengers are places at the nearest land (Scotland, Ireland and the Continent perfered). Additional Markings: None card is light blue with a big red Mutiny and the name of the ship 13) Defeatism Rife A pall of doom hangs over the drawing faction. This lasts on die roll 1-2: 1 turn, 3-4: 2 turns, 5-6: 3 turns. The faction may only move during its turn. It may not attack, ambush, besiege (any sieges in progress are lifted), call parliament or crown a king. Additional Markings: None card is green with read letters 14) French Treachery If the French Mercs are in play they immediately go rogue and sack the nearest unoccupied town or city controlled by their former employers. The Mercs occupy the town commiting all sorts of atrocities. Because of this the employing faction is under restrictions until something is done about this situation. They may not attent or call parliament or crown a king. The mercs sack the town or city until either they die of the plague or the town or city is captured (the town garrison does not help the mercs so this is a simple vs 100 troop siege) Additional Markings: Bad Weather Delays Attack card is black upper left and pink lower right 15) War In Europe There is general war in europe. All Mercs go home to fight, except the French if sacking a town and the Irish who don't care. The following are called to the continent, The Marshal, The cap of Calais and The Admiral with both ships. Ends French Treaty. Additional Markings: 5-4 victory, Killed: Courtney, Howard, Fitzalan, Pole, Herbert card is green upper left and pink lower right 16) Scots Invasion The Scots have invaded in force. The following are called: Percy to Cockersmouth/Alnwick Grey to Chillingham Neville to Raby Warden to Bamburg/Berwick Bishop to Carlisle Bishop to Durham Marshal to the Chevoits Owner to Newcastle Any place not covered is lost to the Scots and must be recaptured by siege. If a noble is called to multiple places, he is considered to cover all places called if he can get to any of them. Places already occupied by any noble are considered covered. End French Treaty. Shuffle Event deck. As long as the Scots hold any place additional Scots invasions can take place. In the event that on the First invasion the Scots fail to take anything the card is removed from play because the scottish King is unlikely to repeat such a disaster again. Additional Markings: 4-1 victory, Killed: Neville, Percy, Howard Card is green upper left and pink lower right. 17) Assassination Draw event cards until you get one with a nobles killed section. The Noble at the bottom of the list has been assassinated by his bulter for non-political reasons. That noble along with all titles and offices is lost (but if titled roll on the noble returns table in the advanced rules). Additional Markings: None card is yellow with green letters. -- Mark Biggar mab@wdl.loral.com
