From: kells@daimi.aau.dk (Kell S|nnichsen) Description: EiA: Aarhus Academic Annals, vol. 1 It's been a long time since the last edition of Nutshell News from the South San Fransisco Bay EiA Gaming Group (or whatever very long name, they use). So I've found, it might be a good idea to post the annals of our gaming group: EiA: Academic Annals of Aarhus, Volume 1, Number 1. Or: How To Smash Two Dominant Powers In Two Years... ============================================================================ A few good men (7, to be exact) of the academic community (sounds nice, doesn't it?) in Aarhus, Denmark, have started a game of Empires in Arms. In spite of two novices nearly the full set of rules is used including Advanced Naval Combat and a lot of patches and 18 pages of additional house rules, though most of them are clarifications. The most important special rules are 6.2.1.2.1 Port Capacity. A ports maximum ship capacity is the value of the harbour defence. Ports without harbour defence have a capacity of 10 ships. Any exceeding number of ships must immediately be removed from the port, either by scuttling ships or by pushing fleets out in the ports blockade box (in this case considered as placed on the outer roads). 7.7 The Conquest Step. A neutral minor country is only conquested when its capital is occupied by an unbesieged corps and all other cities in the country's major district is occupied by army factors, which may be besieged. That means that it isn't so easy to conquer a minor country as earlier. 8.2.3.1 Minor Country Builds. Minor countries with corps build armies even when not controlled. When war is declared on a neutral minor country the number of economic phases since neutrality is multiplied with the minor country's present income (not doubled), and this income is used to buy forces which are placed immediately. Minor countries without any corps build garrisons this way. 10.1.1 Spanish Guerrillas. They also operate in ceded Spanish provinces even if Spain is not at war with the major power in control of the ceded province. 11.0 New Political Combinations. A number of minor countries can have other countries attached to them. This is done in the "New Political Combinations Step", and they are considered a minor country with districts. The countries are: Corfu can be attached to Venice. Cyrenaica can be attached to Egypt. Mecklenburg can be attached to Denmark or Sweden. Norway can be attached to Sweden. Palestine can be attached to Egypt. Sardinia can be attached to Piedmont. 12.2.6.1.3.2 Determine Final Morale Levels. British ships have a morale value of 3.5 instead of 4.0. Danish ships have a morale value of 3.5 in sea areas bordering Denmark, Norway or Sweden, otherwise 3.0. 12.2.1 Optional Sea Crossing Rules. Not used. 12.3.2 British Training. After 24 months under British control a minor country (except potential Ottoman Empire countries) has its infantry and cavalry raised to 3.0 when starting a combat with British army factors. 12.3.5.4 Artillery. When the die is rolled the player must exclaim "booomm!". 12.7 Leader Casualties. Leaders don't die, well at least not before 1815. Instead of dying the leader get pensioned and can be recalled if the major power gets into the Fiasco Zone. Also a roll of 11 will wound the leader for 1-3 months. Bids: Using the first edition rules (?) we ended with the following: Britain France Russia Austria Prussia Spain Turkey Result Henrik 22 37 32 27 2 1 3 England - 22 Farshid 19 25 18 16 10 1 2 France - 25 Claus 5 10 21 3 1 2 4 Russia - 21 Jorgen 4 5 18 15 3 2 1 Austria - 15 Robert 1 2 15 10 8 5 4 Prussia - 8 Kell 6 5 7 4 3 2 1 Spain - 2 Kent 5 6 15 4 3 2 1 Turkey - 1 As the owner of the game, the other players unanimous chosed me (Spain) as Master of Annals. I have used 1 000 troops = 1 factor. OK, here it comes: ----------------------------------------------------------------- January 1805 - March 1805: Just another day on the planet Earth. ----------------------------------------------------------------- During the last days of December 1804 an European summit is held in London with all the European major powers present except France (no visa to Britain) and the Turkish Sultan, who is eagerly studying the maps of northern Africa. The Spanish delegate rush home when a French delegation wants to see him. When the dust clears at the beginning of 1805, France finds her being at war with England, Prussia, Austria and Russia. Spain and Turkey stay neutral. ========== January 1805 ========== More mess when Russia DOW on Sardinia, run by England. Turkey DOW on Egypt, run by England. Spain DOW on Naples, run by England. Spain DOW on Morocco, run by England. France DOW on Wurtemburg, run by Austria (England can't afford loosing more military advisers) France DOW on Hesse, run by Prussia. Shortly afterward this, a lot of alliances are announced: England with Russia France with Turkey Russia with England, Austria, Prussia Austria with Russia, Prussia Prussia with Russia, Austria Spain with Turkey Turkey with France, Spain It turns out that Austria and Prussia combine their efforts against the big French army and England and Russia combine their efforts against the not so big French fleet. The show can begin, ....aaaaanndd action!! The Prussian army masses well behind their borders *just* out of reach of the French armies. The Russians start as far west as possible with their tongues hanging out of their mouths watching in vain for the light blue colour of the French. All they can see is the dark blue stacking of the Prussians. The Austrian army does the same as the Prussian, defending in depth. The English fleet masses outside Amsterdam where the French and Dutch fleet are gathered. Napoleon and a huge French stack starts in the middle of Germany. 3 Turkish corps under the Khan attack with a perfect echelon into an equally perfect cordon of the two Egyptian corps south of Jerusalem. Both break in the third round leaving 5 000 Turkish and 9 000 Egyptian troops dead on the battlefield. The Turkish corps have to retreat out of Egypt and only because of an invasion behind the Egyptian lines a lapse of war is avoided. At Tangier 3 Spanish corps under Castanos makes a simple assault (no slick methods here, Castanos is heard saying) against a Moroccan corps using cordon. The Morrocans break in the second round with 6 000 losses for the prize of only 2 000 Spaniards, and they retreat into the huge Sahara. Another 2 Spanish corps under Blake invade the Italian peninsula at Naples meeting a Neapolitan corps. No military observers survived the battle to tell about the tactics but the end result was a Neapolitan break in the second round leaving 6 000 troops dead. The Spanish losses were 2 000. As the Neapolitan fleet sails to blockade Cadiz which is the only supply source of the Spanish troops another 6 000 Spaniards die while fouraging. The Spanish king is not pleased with his military advisors. At Kessel, Ney with a single French corps attacks Hesse. After 2 rounds both break leaving 2 000 French and 4 000 Hessian troops dead. The allied military observer are not at all impressed by the French and don't even bother to report back the tactics used in the battle. French forces besieges Magdeburg and Stuttgart but with no result. A British landing on Corsica breaches Ajaccio but both sides breaks in the third round with no losses. ========== February 1805 ========== No DOWs. Austria and Prussia combines and so does England and Russia. At Pamietta 3 Turkish corps under the Khan once again tries to crush the Egyptian corps. This time the Khan choses assault and breaks the Egyptian out-flank in the first round, and the Egyptians get wiped out in the pursuit (8 000 cavalry losses) with no losses to the Turks. It seems that the Sultan has had a very serious talk with the Khan about the consequences of another fiasco. 6 Austrian and Prussian corps under Charles find a single French corps at Magdeburg under Bernadotte. And they just *have* to attack the 6 000 French with their 90 000 troops. An assault against the French cordon results in the French extermination in the first round with no allied losses. Bernadotte is captured by the Austrians. But Napoleon is outraged by the Austrian/Prussian lack of gentleman-ship in warfare and doesn't hesitate. He attacks with 4 corps (61 000) the 6 corps under Charles. They both choses outflank and in the second round the allied breaks, and both sides leaves 9 000 dead on the battlefield. At the same time Davout with two French corps (46 000) enters South Tyrol where he meets 4 Austrian corps (45 000) under Mack. Davout choses assault, while Mack with his I Grenadier confidently choses an escalated counter attack. After the first day of battle nobody have broken and the battle continues with a French outflank against the Austrian defend. At last in the third round Davout break the Austrians, but he will undoubtedly be questioned very seriously because of his lack of military competence (4 times the French player rolled a 1!). At Ajaccio the British once again breaches the city's walls, but they break before the inflict any losses. But Ajaccio falls anyway when the 1 000 French die of hunger. At Tangier the Spanish breaches and kill the 1 000 Moroccan. Tangier falls. French still besieges Stuttgart but again with no result. French besieges Kassel but also with no result. Russia conquers Sardinia. ========== March 1805 ========== No DOWs. Austria, Prussia and Russia combines their efforts. The Russian armies has now come so much forward that it seems a good idea for all three countries to combine. As a result of some earlier hostility (in another game, in fact!) between Austria and England, Austria doesn't want to ally with England, and therefore the British and Russian navies cannot combine. This turns out to be a very quiet month. The only battle is a naval battle between the Spanish and the Neapolitan navies outside the harbour of Cadiz. A single Spanish fleet with 29 ships attacks a Neapolitan fleet with only 5 ships ('I'm sorry but we don't have fleets with less ships', a Spanish admiral is heard saying, but the British Admiralty surely doubts this allegation). Both breaks in the second round, but only 4 Neapolitan ships are disabled and they escape to Gibraltar. The British commandant in Gibraltar is very pleased of getting 4 hulls and doesn't seem to hear the demands from Naples about the return of the ships. France besieges Ulm. They breach but in the following battle they break. France still besieges Kassel. This time they breach and take 2 000 Hessians as POW. A joint Prussian/Austrian/Russian force besieges Hanover. They breach and 7 000 French die in the battle but they manage to get a messenger to the French headquarters with the size and identity of the allied corps. Spain conquers Morocco. England conquers Corsica. After The Economic Phase (2.3% of the game played) the victory point status is: Power Victory Point % of goal ----------------------------------------------- Great Britain -14 2.0 France -15 2.4 Russia -13 2.2 Austria - 9 1.7 Prussia 1 2.7 Spain 6 2.4 Turkey 6 2.2 ------------------------------------------------------------------ April 1805 - June 1805: Once upon a time there was a French Navy. ------------------------------------------------------------------ ========== April 1805 ========== Turkey DOW on Cyrenaica, run by England. After very intense negotiations between Spain and the coalition, Spain to the surprise of France declares war on her. Now only Turkey is not at war with France. Spain immediately allies with Austria, Russia and Prussia, but not with England, who also didn't take part in the negotiations. Austria, Prussia, Russia and Spain combines their moves. At Amsterdam the French navy (3 fleets, 64 ships) tries to get out without the British blockade (4 fleets, 97 ships, under Nelson) noticing, but they are spotted and in the following blockade battle the French break in the second round with 20 ships disabled, whereof 9 are captured by the British, 2 sinks and only 9 other returns (with the rest of the navy) to Amsterdam. The British losses are 9 disabled ships and gain 9 French prizes. Only 11 of the 18 ships get safely to London. The Turks invades Cyrenaica with a single corps under the Khan. They assault escalated against the sole Cyrenaican corps' defend at Benghazi and break in the third round. The Turks loses 5 000 troops, Cyrenaica loses 3 000 cavalry (they only have cavalry!). At Mantua a joint Austrian/Prussian army under Mack attacks Davout and his 2 French corps. It is a limited field combat as they try to relieve the Austrian garrison in Mantua where also John waits, and Mack choses probe and Davout defends. Nobody breaks when the day has gone, but France loses 10 000 and Austria/Prussia only 6 000. A huge Austrian/Prussian/Russian force (10 corps) under Charles catches Napoleon with 4 corps at Minden. Charles tries to outflank, but Napoleon has invented the outflank (well, at least he thinks so) and successful withdraws (I can always find out what puny troops they have in that stack another day, he is heard saying). Spain besieges Taranto, but with no result. France besieges Mantua and breach the walls. The 4 000 Austrian guards and John surrenders and become POW. Napoleon is no longer worried about the Austrian troops: If the guard don't want to fight then... Austria takes control of Wurtemburg as no French troops enters the country after the DOW (lapse of war). Prussia conquers Hanover from France. Turkey conquers Egypt. France conquers Hesse from Prussia. ========== May 1805 ========== No DOW. Again Austria, Prussia, Russia and Spain combines. And once again the French navy try to escape from Amsterdam as the coalition forces are getting closer. And again the British blockade catch the French. This time the 3 French fleets only have 44 ships against Nelson's 4 fleets and 88 ships, just enough to gain a 2:1 advantage. This isn't enough, both sides break in the second round. But the French loses 10 out of 26 disabled ships on their way to Antwerpen, the British only 4 out of 8 ships to London. The French navy escapes and sails to Antwerpen, where a single Russian corps later in the month lay siege on the city. And this was the only battle in may... except for the sieges. Turkey besieges Benghazi, they breach and both break in the second round leaving 1 000 dead Turks and 2 000 dead Cyrenaicans. France breaches the walls of Stuttgart and 1 000 Wurtemburger die and the city falls. 2 French corps under Murat breaches the walls of Ulm and yet another 4 000 Wurtemburger die and Ulm falls. At Taranto the Spanish siege has no result. The Spanish troops are boring themselves stiff when suddenly the 1 000 Neapolitans die of hunger and Taranto falls. Russia besieges Antwerpen, but with no result. Russia and Spain invades southern France and besieges Bourges with 3 corps. They breach the walls and 1 000 French die and Bourges are now in the hands of the coalition. 6 Austrian/Prussian/Russian corps under Kutusov fail to breach the walls of Milan. ========== June 1805 ========== No DOW. Surprisingly (?) Austria, Prussia, Russia and Spain once again combines. A quick French corps hurries to Antwerp to relieve the getting-smaller-and- smaller French navy and the garrison from the Russian siege. The French commander choses probe ("it's only one Russian corps, no leaders, far from own lines, and it has walked all the way", he seems to think) and get overrun by the massive counter attack from the filled Russian I corps. The French break in the third round and loses 6 000, the Russians only 2 000. As a result of this, Antwerpen falls in the hands of Russia and the French navy have to leave in a hurry, and once again find the British blockade *just* outside of the harbour. Nelson still have 80 ships, France only 18! And they all get disabled and are all captured by the British, who get 1 ship disabled. 5 sinks on their way to London, that leaves 14 to get safely there. The French navy is now no longer!!! The British harbours are getting so filled with hulks that they start stacking them. In a short time we will see double-decker ships (no, not two-decker, but 2 times three-decker!). Massena outflanks the 3 Russian/Spanish corps at Bourges. Bagration tries a counter attack, he has heard that it works against the French. But this time the coalition breaks in the second round leaving 12 000 dead (6 000 in pursuit!), France loses 3 000. Napoleon attacks the Austrian/Prussian/Russian force at Milan under Kutusov. He tries outflank, but a nicely put cordon by Kutusov prevents this. In spite of the French superiority in troops, Napoleon must face the fact that something drastic has to be done. With a yell: "Merde!!!", he commits the guard 2 steps, but the Austrian does commits their guard as well. No problem, Napoleon thinks after having seen how the Austrian guard "fights" at Mantua two months earlier. But the Austrian guard fights this time and the French break in the second round, leaving 15 000 troops and 2 000 cavalry dead. The coalition losses are nearly as high: 15 000. France besieges Poitiers where 1 000 Russians have seen their opportunity to spend their summer vacation. They breach the walls and all the Russian die. At Bourges the French siege has no result. The 3 Russian/Spanish corps from Bourges then attacks the French at Poitiers. They breach but don't get in, leaving 1 000 Spanish dead. Austria besieges Turin and breach the walls slaughtering every French soldier. At Benghazi the Turks luckily take the city when the Cyrenaicans die of hunger. France conquers Wurtemburg from Austria. After The Economic Phase of June (4.5% of the game played) the Victory Points status is: Major Power Victory Points % of goal ----------------------------------------- Great Britain - 3 4.8 France - 8 4.0 Russia - 3 5.1 Austria - 1 4.1 Prussia 10 5.5 Spain 13 4.6 Turkey 12 4.1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- July 1805 - September 1805: All those minor states, what are they good for? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ========== July 1805 ========== This month start with a huge amount of diplomatic activity between the coalition and France and an even greater activity among the coalition part- ners themselves. Nobody seems to listen to the Spanish delegate and he doesn't really seem to know what is going on. The Turkish Sultan is study- ing the North African map intensely. Following this there are a lot of DOW. England DOW on Denmark, run by ... Turkey! Russia DOW on Sweden, run by France (but in close contest with Turkey, it was long into the night (3 rolls) before the French diplomats won). France DOW on Duchies, run by Prussia. France DOW on Bavaria, run by England. Austria seems surprisingly not to take offense by this clear violation of the Austrian sphere of influence. France DOW on Tuscany, run by Spain. Austria DOW on Tuscany, run by Spain. Austria DOW on Romagna, run by England. France surprisingly(!?) surrenders unconditionally to the coalition. This means Austria and France have enforced peace and both cannot enter Tuscany. It turns out that Austria stays away. Great Britain is impressed by the French II corps and wants it on loan for 12 months (B.4). Russia definitely thinks that Napoleon is a threat to the stability in Europe (C.6). The Austrian, Prussian, Spanish and English delegates agree, i.e. Napoleon is removed. Russia then wants reparations (B.3). Austria wants a buffer zone against France, especially in Italy. France cedes Piedmont, Lombardy and Hesse to Austria (C.4). Prussia really believes that this is the war to end all wars and want to be let alone for 36 months (C.2). The Spanish delegate starts learning German curses. During the peace term negotiations, the Russian Tzar finds pleasure in a very young princess from France (B.5). John and 4 000 Austrian guards return home. Surprisingly all of them dare to come home as they are the *only* prisoners taken in this whole war. France declares Wurtemburg a Free State. Prussia, Russia and Spain combines their movements and - especially - depot supplies. In Kattegat 12 Swedish ships attack a superior Russian fleet of 48 ships. Both are carefull and choses a conservative linear defence which means that the battle ends indecisive, although 6 Swedish ships are disabled and run for Amsterdam(!), 4 of them sinks. At Stockholm Bagration with 20 000 troops (5 000 guards) attacks with a probe against 10 000 troop strong Swedish defence. In the third round 1 000 Russian guards are commited which bring the Swedish defence to a break. The Russian furthermore loses 3 000 troops, the Swedish losses are 6 000. The Turkish Grand Vizier is visiting Copenhagen when the 13 000 English troops attacks with an echelon. He talks the Danish king into letting him take care of the defence of Copenhagen. The 8 000 Danish troops are stunned by the Turkish tactics of counter attack and they fool around and break in the second round after having inflicted 2 000 losses to the British and taking 2 000 themselves. Having no place to retreat, the resulting 6 000 Danes are taken prisoners and so is the Grand Vizier and Copenhagen falls into the hands of the British. As a result of this the Danish fleet with 19 ships must leave the harbour and meets 60 British ships at Copenhagen Roads. The Danish fleet breaks in the third round with 15 ships disabled, 3 of them are captured by the British and when the Turkish(!) admiral is going to give order to sail for Constantinople, a British peace negotiator persuades him with a bag full of money to let the ships go to Christiania instead. 2 of them sinks on their way. The British losses are 3 disabled ships going to Newcastle; they furthermore capture 3, but they sink on their way. 3 Russian corps besieges Stockholm, but with no result. A Bavarian corps besieges Erfurt, where a Dutch corps is stationed by France. They breach the walls but both breaks leaving 4 000 Dutch and 1 000 Bavarian casualties. England breaches the walls of Hamburg and take 2 000 Danes as POWs. Spain conquers Naples (1 ship remains in their fleet). Turkey conquers Cyrenaica. ========== August 1805 ========== France DOW on Baden, run by England. France DOW on Papacy, but also Austria does that (it seems that they lack some mutual diplomacy about their spheres of influence) and both have to step down because of the enforced peace. England DOW on Mecklenburg, run by Spain. Turkey DOW on Tripolitania, run by England. Prussia and England allies. Austria and France allies in spite of the previous 6 months of war and a dispute over Tuscany last month, and Papacy in this. Nobody combines their depot supplies. At Stockholm 1 000 Swedes heroically assaults Bagration and his 16 000 Russians. They defend and the Swedes are wiped out to a man in the first round. The Tzar and the international community seems not even to notice the battle (i.e. no political points). East of Svaeburg another Swedish corps with 3 000 infantry probes a 10 000 Russian infantry. They seem to have heard of the resent battaile at Stock- holm and choses to defend. It takes them two rounds to eliminate the Swedes. Once again no Russian losses. At Erfurt the Dutch last month succeeded to call for help, and Davout with 34 000 French troops arrives and makes a perfect Echelon into the 14 000 Bavarians heroically but stupid counter attack. In the second round they are all eliminated with only 3 000 French losses. A single French corps besieges Munich, but with no result. Soult and 2 corps besieges Freiburg. There is a sortie and 1 000 troops from Baden dies ("They are just feudals", Soult is heard to say. A Turkish war correspondent is amazed at the French disrespect to human lives). At Stockholm Russia breaches the walls and 1 000 Swedes die in the last defence of their capital. Bagration and 2 corps besieges Norrkoping, but with no result. Russia breaches Malmo and 1 000 Swedes are killed. Malmo falls. France conquers Tuscany and Duchies. ========== September 1805 ========== Austria once again DOW on Papacy, run by England. It seems Austria and France have come to an agreement about Italy. Austria announces that Piedmont is now a Free State. No battles but a lot of sieges. Soult and now 3 corps besieges Freiburg and this time they breach the walls. Both break, but France inflicts 7 000 casualties on Baden for the cost of 3 000 French. Davout and a single French corps besieges Nurnberg, but with no result. Murat and another French corps breaches Munich, which falls when the 1 000 defenders are dead. Russia besieges Karlskrona. They breach and 1 000 Swedes are taken POW. Russia besieges Norrkoping with no result. Russia besieges Goteborg with no result. The Khan and 3 Turkish corps besieges Tripoli. They breach but also break. Luckily all 5 000 defenders are eliminated and Tripoli falls nevertheless. Austria breach the Holy City of Rome. The puny 1 000 Papacy defenders sur- renders and and Rome falls. A thrill of disgust flashes through the catholics of the world: the Pope as a prisoner of war! France conquers Bavaria. England conquers Denmark. Austria succeeds in ceding Hesse to Prussia. After 6.8% of the game, the situation is: Major Power Victory Points % of goal ----------------------------------------------- Great Britain 12 8.7 France - 4 4.9 Russia 12 9.3 Austria 7 6.4 Prussia 22 9.1 Spain 23 7.6 Turkey 19 6.3 ------------------------------------------------------------------- October 1805 - December 1805: Well, isn't it getting a bit boring. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ========== October 1805 ========== England DOW on Algeria, run by a Secret Major Power. As the 6 ship strong Swedish Navy is blocking Russian forces from being shipped from Danzig to Sweden, the Russian Navy enters the blockade box and attacks the Swedes. With 24 ships, a superiority of 4:1, the Russian admiral choses a linear defence ("We don't want any of our ships damaged"). But the Swedes surprises by a melee and the Russian Navy break in the second round. Only one Russian ship is disabled, but the Swedes takes it as a prize. Unfortunately this and the 2 disabled Swedish ships all sink on their way home. France still besieges with Soult and 3 corps. They breach and take 1 000 POW from Baden. Freiburg falls. France besieges Nurnberg, breach and take 1 000 Bavarians as POW. Nurnberg falls. Russia breaches Norrkoping and take 2 000 Swedish POW. Norrkoping falls. Russia breaches Goteborg and take 1 000 Swedish POW. Goteborg falls. 2 British corps besieges Algiers, but the Algierians makes a sortie inflicting 1 000 British losses. The Spanish governor in Naples reports massive Austrian forces in Rome; the Austrian general refuses the Spanish concern: "Our troops just want to pray in St. Peter's Cathedral." Austria conquers Romagna. Austria conquers Papacy. Turkey conquers Tripolitania. England conquers Mecklenburg. ========== November 1805 ========== Turkey DOW on Tunesia, run by Russia. Austria breaks an alliance and DOW on Spain. After negotiations with his allies, the Spanish King choses not to call for help from any of them. But there is a increased amount of diplomacy taking place between Spain, Russia and Turkey. At Tunis a single Turkish corps with 6 000 infantry makes an assault on the Tunisian corps (9 000) which defends successfully. The Turks breaks in the second round loosing 3 000, Tunis looses 2 000. Charles with 5 Austrian corps attacks 2 Spanish corps at Naples. Surprisingly the Spanish choses to stay inside the city. Austria breaches the walls and in the following siege battle 10 000 Spaniards and 6 000 Austrians die before Charles break. ========== December 1805 ========== No DOWs. After another round of diplomacy, Russia and Spain combine their moves. Ali with 3 Turkish corps besieges Tunis. They breach and in the following battle they both break, leaving 4 000 Turks and 5 000 Tunisiens dead. 2 British corps breaches Algiers and after the loss of 1 000 Englishmen and 1 000 Algierians, Algiers falls. England takes 4 000 POW. Charles with 4 corps once again lay siege to Naples. They breach the walls only to discover that the Spaniards have sailed away leaving only a symbolic garrison of 1 000, which is taken as POW. Naples falls. The Austrian military commander seems not the least worried about the massive Russian force build-up at the Austrian-Russian border. Maybe he believes that Russia is going to war against the somewhat smaller Turkish build-up at the Austrian-Turkish border. Austria succeeds in ceding the Free State of Piedmont to France. Austria then announces the creation of the Kingdom of Italy consisting of Papacy, Lombardy, Venetia and Illyria. After 9.1% of the game, the situation is: Major Power Victory Points % of goal ----------------------------------------------- Great Britain 22 11.2 France 1 6.1 Russia 27 13.5 Austria 14 8.4 Prussia 32 12.2 Spain 32 10.4 Turkey 26 8.5 -- _/ Kell S|nnichsen _/_/_/_/ The two most abundant things in _/ _/ Computer Science Dept. _/_/_/_/ the Universe are Hydrogen and _/ _/ University of Aarhus, Denmark _/_/_/_/ stupidity. _/ _/ email: kells@daimi.aau.dk _/_/_/_/ -- Harlan Ellison. _/ From: kells@daimi.aau.dk (Kell S|nnichsen) Date: 11-MAR-1994 09:18:51 Description: EiA: Aarhus Academic Annals, vol. 2 The continuing history of the Academic EiA group's game at Aarhus University. We have now reached the year 1806: Sadly this is also the last part :-( ---------------------------------------------------------- January 1806 - March 1806: The none-existence of Austria. ---------------------------------------------------------- ========== January 1806 ========== Russia DOW on Austria ("Well, the Austrian army is fooling around in Italy and our army is ready, so why not?"). Thereby Russia breaks the alliance with Austria. Austria doesn't call for any allies. Russia and Turkey allies. Again, Russia and Spain combines their effort, this time against Austria. Russian forces storms down into Austria carefully avoiding the provinces with potential Austrian insurrection corps. They lay siege to Krakow, Lublin and Lemberg and breaches all three cities taking 1 000 Austrian POW each place. The Austrian army starts the long march home from Naples. Russia conquests Sweden. Austria conquests Naples from Spain. England conquests Algiers. ========== February 1806 ========== Turkey DOW on Austria. Still Austria doesn't call any allies. France announces that Bavaria is now a Free State. Prussia announces that Hesse is a Free State. Russia announces that so is Sweden. Russia, Spain and Turkey combine their efforts against what a Spanish diplomat(?) is calling "The Evil Empire". A single Turkish corps besieges Tunis, but with no result. Russia besieges Czernowitz, Olmutz (Bagration with 4 corps) and Brun, all with no result. It seems that the Russian steam engine has somewhat stopped (steam engines just weren't that reliable back in those days). ========== March 1806 ========== After some diplomatic activity between Austria, France and England, England DOW on Spain who, after some negotiations with Russia and Turkey, doesn't call for any allies. Russia and Turkey combines their moves as they march further into Austria. French forces gets voluntary access into Austria and they march in trying with their light blue colour to operate as peace keeping forces (so they say), but in vain. In the sea area outside Naples a huge English fleet of 60 ships attacks 14 Spanish ships. Nelson on the British side choses a cautious linear defence while the Spanish commodore choses melee. The Spanish ships break in the second round with 9 disabled. England has none, but captures all 9 Spanish disabled ships of which 3 sinks on their way to Malta. The Russian Grande Armee (7 corps) has now reached Vienna, where Kutusov makes an assault against the Austrian forces, but Charles successfully withdraws without a fight. North of Temesvar Ali with 51 000 Turks (30 000 cavalry) is attacking Mack and his two insurrection corps. Ali choses wisely an echelon against the Austrian defend. Both break in the second round and unfortunately no war correspondent survives the bloodshed to give any number of casualties. In the sea area at Palermo Nelson intercepts 43 Spanish ships. Both choses melee and after 3 rounds Nelson with his mighty fleet breaks. It is after all not a total English fiasco as they manage to disable 9 Spanish ships at the loss of only 8 British. Of these 8 ships, 2 are captured by Spain (but sinks on their way to Cagliari) and other 2 sinks on their way to Malta. Spain gets 9 ships to Cagliari. The Spanish, Russian and Turkish Navies assembles in Constantinople. Kutusov with 7 Russian corps breaches Vienna and take 1 000 Austrian POW. Vienna falls! Turkey besieges Tunis and breach the walls. 1 000 Tunisian die and as later another 4 000 die of hunger, Tunis falls. The Russian steam engine has been started again. Russian corps breach Czernowitz, Olmutz and Brun and take 1 000 Austrian POW each place. England besieges Tangier, Cadiz and Sevilla but with no result. Castanos and 2 Spanish corps breaches Naples and eliminates all 1 000 Austrian defenders. No money to Austria as Vienna is in the hands of Russia. Well, *perhaps* the British give some to Austria, in fact, he surely does! After 11.3% of the game played, the situation is: Major Power Victory Points % of goal ----------------------------------------- Great Britain 32 13.8 France 6 7.3 Russia 38 16.6 Austria 21 10.4 Prussia 41 14.9 Spain 39 12.5 Turkey 33 10.8 ----------------------------------- April 1806 - June 1806: Phony War! ----------------------------------- ========== April 1806 ========== No DOWs (for once). France announces that Baden is now a Free State. England and Austria allies. Russia and Turkey combine their moves, while Austria and France combine their moves, i.e. depot supplies. At Debretzin a joint Russian/Turkish force (57 000) under Ali attacks Mack with an assault. Mack and his 37 000 mostly militias defends. In the second round Russia/Turkey breaks and leaves 12 000 dead on the battle- field. The Austrian losses are 8 000. Russia besieges Theresienstadt but with no result. Russia besieges Linz, breach the walls and take 1 000 Austrian POW by routine. Turkey besieges Klausenburg but with no result. Turkey besieges Karlsburg, also with no result. But as the 1 000 Austrian defenders later die of hunger, Karlsburg falls. The same story is repeated at Peterwardein. Turkey also besieges Ofen, breach the walls, but they break. No losses. England still besieges Tangier. This time they breach the walls, and the 1 000 Spanish defenders are eliminated. England besieges Cadiz but with no result. Turkey conquers Tunis. Spain (re)conquers Naples from Austria. ========== May 1806 ========== After some really hectic diplomatic activity, especially between Russia and Prussia (who was talked into DOW on Russia by England), Den Totalen Krieg breaks out: France DOW on Turkey. Russia DOW on England. Turkey DOW on England. Prussia DOW on - *very* surprisingly - England. The English King doesn't really know whether to laugh or to swear (in German, of course). This means that Russia and Prussia break their alliances with England and France breaks her alliance with Turkey. Turkey announces that Egypt, Cyrenaica, Tripolitania and Tunesia are now Free States. Russia, Turkey and Spain combines their moves. Austria and France combines their moves, but as Austria now only consist of the Tyrol province and the Austrian controlled minors in Italy France have to use her own depots in the campaign against Turkey. French corps en masse march through Austria heading for Turkey. At Ofen Soult with 32 000 fresh French troops makes a perfect echelon against the 7 000 Turkish infantry's escalated counter attack. The Turks break in the second round, leaving 5 000 dead Turks and 1 000 dead French- men. In the battle Soult manage to get himself wounded for 1 month. All British Fleets leaves the Mediterranean. Massena and 2 French corps besieges Eszek. 1 000 Frenchmen die as a result of a sortie. Turkey besieges Klausenburg with no result. It falls as the 1 000 Austrian defenders die of hunger. Prussia besieges Lubeck, breaches the walls and take 1 000 Englishmen as POW. Turkey besieges Kronstadt, breaches the walls and routinely take 1 000 Austrian POW. Russia does the same at Ofen (they arrive after the Turkish/French battle) and Trieste. Now all Austrian cities except Salzburg are occupied by Russian/Turkish forces. Charles is hiding in the Tyrol mountains with nearly all of the Austrian army. Turkey besieges Algier but with no result. Castanos and 4 Russian/Spanish corps besieges Rome but with no result. England conquers Morocco from Spain. ========== June 1806 ========== No DOWs as everybody is at war with everybody. Spain declares Naples a Free State. Russia, Turkey and Spain combines. North of Temesvar 46 000 Frenchmen under Davoult attacks a single Turkish corps. Davoult's probe reveals that there are only 1 000 Turks making a counter attack. They are eliminated in the second round with no French losses. At Trieste John and 2 Austrian corps with 32 000 troops attacks a single Russian corps with 10 000. They defend bravely against the Austrian assault and the Austrians break in the third round leaving 3 000 dead. The Russian losses are 5 000. Bagration marches with 8(!) Russian corps with 72 000 infantry, guards and cavalry from the occupation of Vienna to the mountains southeast of Krakow and captures Mack with 24 000 in 2 insurrection corps (militia!). Bagration choses echelon and Mack defend. In the second round all 24 000 Austrians are dead and Mack taken as POW. The Russian losses are 4 000 and Bagration is wounded for 1 month. Two Austrian suicide corps head for respectively Brest-Litovsk and Lemberg to cut the Russian supply lines. They all die of bad fouraging. These were the last Austrian forces *not* piled in Saltzburg. Prussia besieges Hamburg with no result. France besieges Eszek with no result. Turkey besieges Algiers with no result. Russia besieges Ancona, breach the walls and take 1 000 Austrians as POW. Spain besieges Rome, breach the walls and take 1 000 Austrains as POW. Russia besieges Malta, breach the walls and kill the 1 000 Englishmen. Spain besieges Tangier with no result. Russia conquers Norway from England (nobody in Christiania). Prussia conquers Mecklenburg from England. Turkey announces the foundation of the Ottoman Empire, consisting of Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Cyrenaica, Tripolitania and Tunesia. Russia adds Norway as a secondary district to Sweden. The Danish King is out of his minds and start swearing in what he believes is Russian. No money to Austria as Vienna is in the hands of Russia. After 13.6% of the game played, the situation is: Major Power Victory Points % of goal ----------------------------------------- Great Britain 42 16.3 France 11 8.5 Russia 47 19.1 Austria 26 11.9 Prussia 48 17.1 Spain 46 14.7 Turkey 39 12.7 ------------------------------------------------------- July 1806 - September 1806: Hide-and-seek with fleets. ------------------------------------------------------- ========== July 1806 ========== No DOWs. Russia, Spain and Turkey combines their (fleet) movement. England and Austria combines. The joint Russian/Spanish/Turkish fleet chases the Royal Navy from the Mediterranean to the Baltics, but no contact is made. On their way they meet a puny French Navy of 6 ships heading for the Mediterranean. As the main Russian is now placed in the mountains of Krakow, a joint English/Austrian force of 3 corps under Wellington besieges Linz where there is a single Russian corps. But with no result. Turkey besieges Algiers, breach the walls and kill the 1 000 Englishmen. Russia breaches the walls of Ajaccio and take 1 000 Englishmen as POW. France besieges Eszek, breach the walls and take 3 000 Turks as POW. France besieges Peterwardein, breach and take 1 000 Turks as POW. France besieges Sarajevo but with no result. Davoult and 2 French corps besieges Belgrade, but suffer a loss of 1 000 when the Turks make a sortie. Bernadotte and 2 French corps besieges Temesvar but with no result. Spain besieges Tangier but with no result. Tangier falls when the 1 000 British defenders die of hunger. As a result of the Austrian fiasco, the people of Romagna rebels and turn to Russia to secure their independence (Austria in the instability zone and a Russian corps in Romagna). Russia conquers Illyria (part of Kingdom of Italy) from Austria. Spain conquers Papacy from Austria. ========== August 1806 ========== No DOWs. Again Russia, Spain and Turkey combines. Also England and Austria does this. The Russian Tzar is *very* worried as it turns out that the Royal Navy is carrying 2 British corps to the bottom of the Baltics, just outside of St. Petersburg. He swiftly changes his summer residence to the Kremlin in Moscow. The British King is worried as the joint Russian/Spanish/Turkish fleet enters the English Channel with a Spanish and a Russian corps, just outside of London. He swiftly changes his summer residence to Balmoral. On the Algiers Roads a battle is initiated by the French between most of the French Navy (5 ships) and a single Turkish ship. After a resultless battle the Turkish ship is so damaged that it heads for home. The ship is captured by the French but sinks on its way to France. The French Navy put a single French corps (10 000) ashore at Algiers making forced access as this is a part of the British Empire. They attack the Turkish corps (8 000) with an echelon and runs straight into the Turkish cordon. Nevertheless the Turks break in the second round. Both parts looses 2 000 infantry. At Peterwardein 6 000 Russians attacks 3 000 Austrians. The Russians chose probe while the Austrians defends. Austria breaks in the third round and are eliminated in the pursuit (5 000 Russian cavalry!). No Russian losses. France besieges Sarajevo, breach the walls and take 1 000 Turkish as POW. The same happens at Schabacz. Massena and Bernadotte besieges Belgrade and Temesvar respectively, but with no result. Russia besieges Bologna which falls when the 1 000 Austrian die of hunger. Russia besieges Milan and Venice, breach their walls and take 1 000 Austrian as POW each place. Russia besieges Copenhagen, breach the walls and take 1 000 Englishman as POW. 3 Prussian corps breach the walls of Hamburg and take 3 000 Englishmen as POW. The 2 British corps with the Royal Navy lands at St. Petersburg and besieges it but with no result. Unfortunately (to the Tzar) the 1 000 Russian defen- ders die of hunger and St. Petersburg falls! Blake and a Russian and a Spanish corps invades Great Britain and lay siege to London as the 11 000 British defenders choses not to take an open battle against the 20 000 Russian/Spanish attackers. The siege is with no result. Spain conquers Morocco from England. ========== September 1806 ========== No DOWs. Russia, Prussia, Spain and Turkey combines. France and Austria combines. The Royal Navy (88 ships) leaves the Baltics leaving the 2 British to their fate as Russian corps races for St. Petersburg. Very ungentlemanlike. The Joint Fleet (108 ships) enters the Baltics to be ready to engage the Royal Navy in case they would engage the 9 ships blockading the harbour of St. Petersburg. But no contact is made with the Royal Navy. At St. Petersburg Bagration with 5 corps (50 000) attacks Wellington and his 16 000 men (8 000 cavalry, 2 000 guards and 6 000 infantry - the flower of British youth). Bagration choses echelon while Wellington with his superior tactical capa- bility make a successful outflank and breaks the Russians in the third round. 2 000 Cossacks and 1 000 other Russians die at the loss of 3 000 English infantry. St. Petersburg is still in the hands of the British. Blake and the 2 Russian/Spanish corps breach the walls of London. But they break leaving 2 000 dead. The British losses are as high as 5 000. Spain besieges Gibraltar with no result. As Gibraltar has no way of getting sea supply it isn't hopeless to besiege. Massena with 2 French corps besieges Belgrade and break the walls. They take 2 000 Turks and 1 000 Serbs as POW. Bernadotte and 1 French corps finally breach the walls of Temesvar and take 2 000 Macedonians as POW. Davoult and 4 French corps besieges Adrianople with no result. Russia conquers Lombardy (part of Kingdom of Italy) from Austria. Russia conquers Venetia (last part of Kingdom of Italy) from Austria. The Kingdom of Italy no longer exists. Russia conquers Denmark from England. No money to Austria and Russia as their capitals are in the hands of an enemy. With 15.9% of the game played, the situation is: Major Power Victory Points % of goal ---------------------------------------- Great Britain 51 18.6 France 16 9.6 Russia 59 22.5 Austria 29 12.8 Prussia 54 18.9 Spain 54 16.8 Turkey 45 14.6 ------------------------------------------------------ October 1806 - December 1806: The burning of capitals. ------------------------------------------------------ ========== October 1806 ========== No DOWs. Russia, Spain, Turkey and Prussia combines. So does Austria and France. The Spanish and Neapolitan fleets sail from Hamburg with a single corps and meet with the joined Russian, Swedish, Spanish and Turkish navies (total 116 ships) in the Jutland Sea Area. They are intercepted by Nelson and the Royal Navy with 87 ships. Both bloodthirstily choses melee and in the third round the allied breaks with as many as 14 ships disabled with only 6 British disabled. A Russian and a Spanish admiral is hung in the ... for their incompetence (the Russian and Spanish player managed to roll 3 ones!). The British capture 4 of the ships but only get 5 ships to Belfast. The allied get 10 ships to Christiania. The allied navy retreats into Hamburg. The British cavalry corps with Wellington leaves St. Petersburg and starts a march towards Moscow. On their way they fourage successfully. The remaining I corps is left to its destiny. A single Austrian cavalry corps leaves the safety(?) of Salzburg and enters the French part of Germany heading for Amsterdam or perhaps Hamburg where only Prussian corps are present. As Austria isn't at war with Prussia, the corps could force the allied ships out of the harbour and into the arms of the British blockade. The corps turns out to be the Light Infantry. Turkey besieges Oran, the Englishmen die of hunger and Oran falls. Spain besieges Gibraltar with no result. Spain and Russia (2 corps under Blake) besieges London, they breach the walls and after a fierce fight (also outside the map) London falls with the loss of 4 000 Englishmen and 1 000 Spaniards. The 11 ships in the harbour will be used as firewood in the upcoming winter. This probably means that England no longer rules the seas. For some reason, the British king doesn't agree. 5 Russian corps under Bagration breaches the walls of St. Petersburg where the 5 000 English defenders are eliminated (earlier 6 000 has died of hunger as they get no sea supply because of the Russian blockade) at the loss of only 1 000 Russians. The Tzar is very pleased and returns to St. Petersburg where Bagration is awarded with yet another irrelevant medal. Soult and a single French corps besieges Adrianople, but with no result. Davoult and 4 French corps besieges Constantinople, but with no result. France besieges Tunis, breach the walls and take the 1 000 Turkish defenders as POW. France besieges Saloniki with no result. As a result of the Russian recapture of St. Petersburg the British fleet (2 ships) in the harbour tries to escape the Russian blockade (7 ships). The blockade battle results in the capture of 1 British ship which make it into the harbour of St. Petersburg, the other British disabled ship sinks on its way home. No Russian losses. ========== November 1806 ========== No DOWs. Again Russia, Spain, Turkey and Prussia combines, and so does France and Austria. The joint allied navy (102 ships) tries to pass the British blockade (81 ships) at Hamburg, but the British intercepts and a blockade battle takes place. Nelson is brilliant (English player rolls a 5 and a 6) and breaks the allied in the second round with 23 disabled ships. The British have 19 disabled, but only 7 reaches Newcastle. Of the allied ships 13 reaches Christiania and 2 returns to the harbour of Hamburg. The British King is very pleased with Nelson. The British cavalry corps in Russia march south as the winter will soon come. 3 000 horses die fouraging. The main Turkish army retreats deep into Anatolia and as a French fleet appears in the sea area outside Constantinople they can't return to Europe. France besieges Saloniki and take the city as all 1 000 defenders die of hunger. France besieges Adrianople, breach the walls and inflicts 6 000 Greek casualties before the Greeks break. 2 000 Greeks and 1 000 Turks are taken as POW at the loss of 3 000 Frenchmen. France besieges Sofia, breach the walls and take 1 000 Turks as POW. Spain besieges Gibraltar with no result, but the Spanish moral increases as they learn that 3 000 Englishmen starve to death. France conquers Tunesia from Turkey. Turkey conquers Algiers from England. ========== December 1806 ========== No DOWs. Still Austria/France combines and so does Russia/Turkey/Spain/Prussia. As the joint allied naval force of now only 81 ships try to slip out of the harbour of Hamburg they once again is intercepted by the British blockading task force. Nelson commands only 69 ships this time, and he is not so lucky. Both parts break in the third round with 23 disabled British ships and only 15 allied. At this point Nelson is blamed of not having spotted out the up to 46 ships placed at the outer roads of Hamburg [we have forgotten all about our home rule of there being only place in a harbour for a number of ships equal to the number of guns in the harbour, i.e. 70 ships in Hamburg, which means that in October 46 ships must have been placed at the outer roads = blockade box. This is of course a problem when the British navy has found exactly this place being nice to place 87 ships. After a very long and heated discussion, we decided to not do anything about it, after all the allied forces were now down to 67 ships so there would be no further problem]. At London a leaderless British force of 10 000 attacks the Russian/Spanish force of 16 000. The British heroically attacks in a probe against the allied defence. At the end of the day 5 000 British have fallen, Russia/Spain losses are 3 000. But the battle continues through the second day, once again with a probe against a defend. The British losses are 4 000 this time with no losses for Russia/Spain. Nobody breaks but the British chooses to walk away. France is really giving out money in supply now (33$), but nevertheless 6 000 Frenchmen die of hunger in this month in the frosty Balkan mountains. Even Austria starts fouraging in Tyrol. The British expeditionary forces in Russia looses another 1 000 cavalrists in fouraging. France with 2 corps under Soult besieges Constantinople (2 Turkish corps) but with no result. France besieges Phillipopolis with no result. France breach the walls of Athens and take 1 000 Turks as POW. Spain besieges Gibraltar with no result, except that 2 000 British defenders die of hunger. At this point the game unfortunately collapses as players start not to show up at play sessions etc. This is most unfortunate, I have never seen a game where both *dominant* powers (France and England) get mashed within two years. At least Spain/Russia agreed that England's best chances where to surrender unconditionally as only manpower from Wales, Scotland and Ireland could be collected, because London was enemy occupied. With virtually no British army left, he couldn't hope to take back London soon. And as 6 Russian and 9 Spanish ships just have been build, the British Navy would be outnumbered considerably. The British player doesn't at all agree with this. According to his oppinion Prussia could be forced diplomatically (bullying by France and England) to withdraw from the war, and if not Austria would have declared war on Prussia. Russia would have been eliminated or should withdraw very quickly from Austria when (not if) France declared war in January 1807 and the Turkish army was out of the war when it retreated to Anatolia. All in all England would have been forced to surrender if/when Prussian corps invades England, Turkey would have been forced to surrender as France had naval superiority in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, Russia would have been forced to surrender as France and Austria had odds 2-1, better morale, no Russian supplies (A French corps at the Austrian border *just* besides a Russian depot) in the winter. With the quality part of the Russian army isolated in Austria in the winter this way, it would (?) only be a matter of time (looong time) before Russia was forced to surrender. Then Spain and Prussia would have been rolled over. The game would have decayed into a if-I'm-gonna-die-then-I'll-take-as-many-of-my-enemies-with-me-as-I-can sort of gaming. That is - of course - an opinion, but I (Spain) don't totally agree, Russia doesn't agree at all. He points out, that France doesn't have supplies in Austria as well and that France/Austria aren't 2-1, Turkey wouldn't have to surrender as when the English fleet was eliminated the Turkish navy could return to the Mediterranean. Etc. :-) Well, no more words from me, now. -- _/ Kell S|nnichsen _/_/_/_/ The two most abundant things in _/ _/ Computer Science Dept. _/_/_/_/ the Universe are Hydrogen and _/ _/ University of Aarhus, Denmark _/_/_/_/ stupidity. _/ _/ email: kells@daimi.aau.dk _/_/_/_/ -- Harlan Ellison. _/
