From Moves magazine-Nov/Dec 1987 The Big White and Blue Five Day Two-Map Campaign Game for Abensberg/Eckmuhl by Keith Poulter 18.8) 18th-22nd April (2 maps) This scenario covers the five days in April 1809 which encompassed the twin battles of Abensberg (20th April) and Eckmuhl (21st-22nd April). By including the 18th and 19th, the players have a chance to maneuver their forces quite freely-they are not fixed into predetermined historical patterns. The reinforcement schedule assumes that Charles did not leave Bellegarde detached to the north, but chose instead to order him to join the army south of Ratisbon. In all other respects, the reinforcement schedule reflects the historical situation of the armies on the 18th. Hex numbers and units prefixed by an E refer to components of the Eckmuhl game (S&T #114), those without a letter prefix refer to the Abensberg game (S&T#113). 18.81 Set-up French units set up as in scenario 18.1 (19th April), plus: ID# Hex -------------- 3 E3108 E65 E5315 E66 E5117 Austrian units set up as follows: ID# Hex ID# Hex ID# Hex -------------- -------------- -------------- 109 5026 156 156 4718 166 5018 110 5026 157 4718 167 5018 111 5226 158 4718 168 5019 112 5226 159 4718 169 5019 113 5122 160 4818 170 5117 114 5122 161 4818 171 5117 115 5323 162 4916 172 5116 116 5323 163 4916 173 5116 117 5027 164 4915 E115 6620 118 5027 165 5018 E130 5219 E131 5219 E147 4912 E162 4721 E132 5219 E148 5011 E163 4824 E133 5316 E149 5011 E164 4624 E134 5316 E150 5109 E165 5022 E135 5319 E151 5109 E166 4924 E136 5319 E152 5109 E167 4923 E137 5418 E153 5211 E168 4522 E139 5314 E154 5211 E186 6413 E140 5314 E155 5308 E189 6412 E141 5314 E156 5308 E194 6619 E142 5314 E157 5309 E195 6619 E143 5114 E158 5309 E196 6718 E144 5114 E159 4721 E197 6718 E145 4912 E160 4721 E198 6818 E146 4912 E161 4721 E199 6818 E200 6620 18.82 Reinforcements The Austrian player receives reinforcements as follows: Unit ID# Time Day Entry Hex E169-193, 0745 hrs 18th E3400 (less E186,E189) 94-108, 1335 hrs 18th 2933 119,120 146-155 1555 hrs 18th 2933 121-145 0710 hrs 20th 2933 174-197 0745 hrs 20th E3400 The French player receives reinforcements as follows: Unit ID# Time Day Entry Hex 41-48 1040 hrs 18th 1018 49-46 1445 hrs 18th 1018 32-40,57 1555 hrs 18th 1012 58-69 1445 hrs 19th 1018 2,25-29 0710 hrs 20th 1005 E1,E106 0820 hrs 20th 1018 E2-E23 1445 hrs 20th 1030 E70-E93 1555 hrs 20th 1033 30-31 1555 hrs 21st 1007 18.83 Scenario Length The scenario begins at 0710 hours on the 18th, and ends at 2145 hours on the 22nd. 18.84 Victory Conditions To win, the French player must inflict a loss of at least 300 strength points on the Austrian army, and suffer less than two-thirds the loss of the Austrians. To win, the Austrian player must inflict losses of at least 200 strength points on the French army, and suffer no more than one and one quarter times the French loss. Any other result is a draw. A victory check is made at the conclusion of the 2330 hours turn of each day (18th-21st), and at the end of the game. If either player has attained his victory conditions at that point, he wins the game. If neither player has achieved his victory conditions, play continues. If neither player has achieved his victory conditions by the end of the 2145 hours turn on the 22nd, the game is a draw. At the point when a victory check is made, all units are examined to see if they are in supply. To be in supply, Austrian units must be able to trace a line of hexes, of any length, free of enemy units and ZOC (friendly units negate enemy ZOC, however), to the south (Abensberg), north (Eckmuhl),or east (either map) mapedges. Supply can only be traced to the northern map edge via hex E3400 or across the Danube via a completed pontoon bridge in Austrian hands. Supply can never be traced across the Danube in any other way. To be in supply, French units must be able to trace a line of hexes, of any length, free of enemy units and ZOC (friendly units negate enemy ZOC, however) to the western map edge (either map) at or south of hex E1024. For either player, any unit not able to trace supply have their remaining strength point total added to the enemy's victory point total. 18.85 Special Rules (1) Lindenau's division receives command control from Liechtenstein. The division can be switched to Hoheit's (V) Corps, but only if Liechtenstein and Hoheit are stacked together, and the Austrian player announces the switch. If switched to V Corps command, the division cannot subsequently be switched back to Liechtenstein. (2) Demont's division may be given command control by Lannes, Lefebvre, or Davout, at the French player's discretion. At the moment of Demont's entry, the French player must announce which corps commander he is subordinate to. (3) Bessieres maybe given command control of up to three divisions. In order to be given such command, Bessieres must be stacked with Napoleon and the French player must announce the divisions he will be allocated. Changes in the divisions he commands can only subsequently be made when Bessieres and Napoleon are stacked together, and whenever a change is made, any affected divisions are considered not to be in command control for the following two game-turns. (4) Lannes may give command in a similar way to Bessieres, up to a maximum of 4 divisions. (5) Louis gives command as in the Abensberg game. (6) In general, use the Eckmuhl rules. (7) Both sides may deploy skirmishers. (8) Austrian units E186 and E189 are considered part of Liechtenstein's command at the start of the scenario. They can be transferred to Kollowrat's II Corps at any time when both units are within Kollowrat's command radius (5 hexes). Once the Austrian player has announced such a transfer, the units may never revert to Liechtenstein's command. (9) Davout commands all French units which are on the map at the start of the scenario. (10) All reinforcements enter in column, one unit behind another, each unit having 1/2 MP less than the preceding one. All reinforcements are considered to be in command control on their turn of entry.
