Scenarios: Abensberg & Eckmuhl By Keith Poulter The following are two further two-map scenarios, plus variant rules covering the possible employment of optional French and Austrian reinforcements. Counters and hex references prefixed by an "E" refer to the Eckmuhl counter mix or map; those with no prefix are from the Abensberg game. 18.6 20th-21st April 18.61 General The scenario is the same as 18.5 (S&T #115),apart from the changes below. 18.62 Reinforcements Austrians (optional) By mutual agreement between the players at the start of the game, Bellegarde's corps enters at hex E3400 at 0820 hours on the 21st. The corps is in command control on the first turn of entry; and enters in column. French (mandatory) The two units of Demont's Reserve division (#30,31) enter at hex 1007 at 0820 hours on the 21st. They are not in command control on the first turn of entry; they enter in column. 18.63 Scenario Length The scenario lasts from 0930 hours on the 20th to 2000 hours on the 21st. 18.64 Victory Conditions The French player wins if he inflicts losses on the Austrians of at least 2.5:1, and the Austrians lose at least 150 strength points. Units which are surrounded at the end of the scenario, have their (remaining) strength points counted towards the enemy's victory point total. The Austrian wins by avoiding the French victory conditions. 18.65 Special Rules (1) Charles is not subject to the "epilepsy" die-roll after the 2330 turn on the 20th. (2) Demont's division may be attached, for command control purposes, to either Davout's III Corps, Lefebvre's VII Corps, or Lannes' Provisional Corps, or may of course be directly commanded by Napoleon. If one unit of the division is in command control, the other is also automatically in command, if it is within two hexes of the first unit (i.e. there is no more than one hex between them). 18.7 20th-22nd April 18.71 General This scenario is the same as 18.6, apart from the changes shown below. 18.72 Reinforcements Austrian (optional) By mutual agreement between the players at the start of the game, Bellegarde's corps enters at hex E3400 at 0820 hours on the 22nd. The corps is in command control on the first turn of entry; and enters in column. Note that this is an alternative to the optional entry of the corps on the 21st. French (optional) (1) Massena's corps enters at hex 7031 at 0855 hours on the 22nd. The corps is in command control, and enters in column. (2) Oudinot's corps enters at hex 1033 at 0855 hours on the 22nd, in command control and in column. (3) Bessieres enters at hex 7031 at 1005 hours on the 22nd. These French reinforcements only enter if players have agreed at the start of the game that they shall do so. 18.73 Scenario Length The scenario lasts from 0930 hours on the 20th to 2145 hours on the 22nd. 18.74 Victory Conditions The French player wins if he inflicts losses on the Austrians of at least 2:1, and the Austrians lose at least 240 strength points. Units which are surrounded at the end of the scenario, have their (remaining) strength points counted towards the enemy's victory point total. The Austrian wins by avoiding the French victory conditions. 18.75 Special Rules Bessieres may be given command of any three divisions, or of any five if stacked with Napoleon. Upon giving command of a particular division to Bessieres, the identity of the division must be noted on a scratch pad. The division can only cease to be commanded during a turn in which he (Bessieres) is stacked with Napoleon, and in which the change in command is noted on a scratch pad. During the turn in which a division switches to or from Bessieres' command, the division cannot automatically be given command control even if within normal command control range; it will only be in command on a die roll of less than its (new) corps commander's leadership rating (e.g. in the case of Bessieres, 5-1=4). If Napoleon is stacked with the new corps commander (Bessieres or another), however, at the start of the turn in which control is switched, the division is in command (or not) in the normal way. Important Rules Change In all scenarios which list E62 as part of Montbrun's cavalry screen, replace this by units E65 and E66. The units set up together in the position listed for E62. Skirmishers (if any) are detached equally from the two units starting with unit E65 (thus if an odd number of skirmishers is detached at the start of the scenario, one more will be detached from E65 than from E66). The two units are treated as part of Montbrun's division for purposes of command control. The strength and morale information for the two counters can be found in the accompanying roster sheet.
