>From S&T 175. p.42: 30 Years War Variant Counters & Rules: counter sheet includes Ottoman and independent units which may be used to expand 30 Years War (which appeared in S&T 173) -- I've been spectacularly unsuccessfully in trying to photocopy the punched counters. Independent Marshals are white in color and with factors: 1/1 Ottoman counters are gray in color: 2 - 1/1 Marshals; 1- 2/1 Marshall: Murad; 2 artillery counters with sides for 1 and 2 strengths; 3 fleets with sides for 1 and 2 strengths; 4 calvary with sides for 1 and 2 strengths 5 infantry with sides for 1 and 2 strengths; 8 militia with sides for 1 and 2 strengths. Remember, this is the counter limit for Ottoman builds. You'll have to make up Ottoman and Russian control markers. Additional Rules 1. The playing area now extends to the entire map. Units may enter the formerly prohibited areas of the Ottoman Empire and Russia. 2. The Ottoman Empire enters play only if 1) Players want to start the game with a fifth player; or 2) Any Ottoman (OT) province is invaded. 3. Russia (RU) enters play via normal rules for Minor Country entry. 4. If the Event Civil War occurs, roll an additional d6. On a "5," all Russian (RU) areas are affected. On a "6," all Ottoman (OT) areas are affected. This is in addition to provinces normally affected by Civil War. 5. The provinces of Bosnia, Ottoman Hungary, and Transylvania are NOT considered part of the Ottoman Empire (while technically satrapies of the Ottomans, they were semi-independent at the time). The Event Ottoman Entry applies to these three provinces, not the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman Empire 1. The Ottoman Empire is considered to be a Major Power. 2. The Ottomans are always the fifth player in the turn sequence. 3. The Ottoman player always begins the game with 10 Treasury Points and 0 Diplomacy Points. 4. Ottoman units are deployed as follows (in all scenarios); units must be placed in available fortresses: - Rumelia: 4 infantry, 1 calvary, 2 artillery, 1 militia - Bulgaria: 1 militia - Serbia: 1 militia - Albania: 1 infantry, 1 militia - Morea: 1 militia - Wallachia: 1 cavalry, 1 militia - Crimea: 2 cavalry - Black Sea: 1 fleet - Aegean Sea: 1 fleet 5. The Ottomans receive 5 extra Treasury Points each turn (representing off map provinces of the Empire). Russia 1. Russia is considered to be a Minor Country. Russian units are represented by Independent (white) units. 2. Russian (white) units are deployed as follows (in all scenarios); units must be placed in available fortresses: - Muscovy (1618-30): 1 cavalry, 2 militia - Muscovy (1631-48): 1 infantry, 1 cavalry, 1 artillery, 1 militia - Novgorod: 2 militia - Ukraine: 2 cavalry Independent Leaders The variant counters include three Independent (white) Marshals. These may be recruited by any Major Power which controls at least one Independent (white) unit. The Independent Marshall is placed on any Independent unit the Power controls. Recruiting/Maintenance/Disbanding costs for Independent Marshals are the same as for Major Power leaders. Doug Murphy
