Rommel at the Meuse (Simulations Workshop, DTP). Markus fault (I read too much his comments on BGG). The breakthrough at Dinant, 1940. Battalions and companies (for tanks). Played 2 solo games. Little good game. You have everything you was waiting for if you know this battle, in few pages of rules. Engineers at work, Combined arms assault, traffic jam, opportunities, bad prepared French, command problems, harsh fights, refueling problems for the 1st DCR, etc. Crossing the Meuse quickly to be on the West shore for the morning of June 13th is a doable challenge. River assault, pontoon bridge, finding forgotten locks, repairing bridge... There is a lot to do with the engineers during the first 5 turns. Rushing to Philippeville and cleaning the road for a breakthrough is still problematic even with the superiority in quality and quantity. Command problems may appear quickly on both sides if you don't take care. A lot of maneuvers and harsh fights. A lost battalion in a village can hold for a long time and be a real pain for the Rommel's plan. You think the battle is over many times, and you're wrong many times. Reinforcements enter the game slowly but surely. They can't do enough to be a real threat, but always enough to jam the German well oiled machine. At the end, you played what you read and saw about the battle. And it is challenging. The VC make it's difficult for both sides to have better than a draw, but the battle and its problems are well rendered (I just would have like to see more problems between Rommel and Von Hartlieb -5PzD). The design is intelligent and clever. A good tactical feel with operative POV. It should be transposable for Sedan. Flaws : too much die rolls. For example, if an hex with 2 german battalions and 3 tanks companies attack an hex with 3 French battalions, you'll have from 8 to 16 rolls (you must roll less than your FP for a hit, with TM, and the defender must roll less than his effectiveness , with TM, if there's a hit. The attacked units have first a defensive fire)... And if the defender is not powerful and in a well defended position, there's a good chance you'll have no significant result. And, as often with F40 battles, there is not so much fun for the French. His most important decisions are when and where to retreat and when and where to block. And the game is not so short.
