Pete Atack - Jul 28, 2007 11:13 pm (#19624 Total: 19635) Command Mags Inchon : MacArthur's Gambit Initial NKPA deployment. Wolmi-do : unoccupied Inchon : 3 weak battalions of the 226th Marine Regt supported by 3 batteries of the 918th Coastal Defense Artillery. Kimpo Airfield : 3 security battalions and an Air Force battalion Seoul : 2 regiments of the 18th Inf Div, the Seoul City Regt, and artillery regt, and supporting battalions of anti-tank, anti-aircraft and Railroad troops. Suwon : 1 regt of the 18th Inf Div Mahang-ri, Anyang & Haengju : 1 battalion each of the 42d Mech Regt GT1 Under a blanket of naval gunfire (NGF) and air support, the 1st & 5th Marines storm ashore on Green, Red, & Blue Beaches. NKPA resistance is tame as shell shocked units collapse under the assault. As the second wave prepares to land, the fleet's guns range inland & pound 2 security bns moving up towrad Inchon as well as defenses at Kimpo AF and the mech bn in Mahang-ri. GT2 Encouraged by weak opposition, Marine bns overwhelm the NKPA in Ascom City & Mahang-ri and close in on Sosa just after reinforcing infantry from the 18th Inf Div arrive in the city. North of the Inchon-Seoul Highway several NK bns occupy delaying positions as Seoul is prepared for the defense. Lastly, ROK Marines clear the last defenders still holding out near Inchon. GT3 Still supported heavily by NGF, US units handily destroy defenders in Sosa, south of Lookout Hill, & west of Kimpo. With US columns closing in too quickly, the North commits its 2 mech bns to attacking the US/ROK flanks. To the south the ROK Marines are pushed back, but in the north disaster strikes. Massed US airpower in support of Marine tanks and engineers crush the attacking troops leaving the route to Kimpo & Soryu-li open to a US advance. GT4 US supplied firepower still holds sway on the battlefield as most NKPA units are battered before being attacked. South of the Han River only Anyang is still in NKPA hands (defended by about 5 bns). GT5 With reinforcements flowing into Inchon and the 187th Airborne arriving in Kimpo, the US looks to continue its attack. ROK Marines with limited US support take Anyang largely covering the southern flank. Around Seoul, US Marines move a regt east and west of the city threatening multiple crossings while a smaller Army group does the same arounf Haenju. Just in time, the NKPA 25th Brigade moves into the city to bolster defenses. GT6 Away from the main evernt, ROK Marines and 1 US bn supported by tanks get into some heavy fighting around Anyang with both sides taking losses. In Seoul a quick attack by the USMC fails to take the Capitol building costing several tanks. The crossing to the east does little more than keep several NK bns in the line from moving to the west. GT7 Seeking to get more men into the fight for the Capitol, the US 31st Regt clears the hills due north of the key building. In the east, a Marine attack goes poorly pushing the attackers back across the ferry crossing site, leaving two other bns cut off north of the Han. Around the city, artillery fire in support of the NKPA is becoming heavy. GT8 South of the Capitol, Marine tanks and infantry attack improved positions but fail to take the position which is quickly replenished with replacements. Northeast of the Capitol, the US 31st Regt is almost able to break into the city before one of its bns is wiped out when attacked from behind by the newly arriving NKPA 78th Regt. To the east, the Marine Corps is able to reclaim it's pride when it recrosses the Han and destroys the NKPA bn that had earlier repulsed their attacks. South of Anyang more good news arrives as the NK 85th Regt is surrounded and destroyed, drastically weakening the North's positions guarding Suwon. GT9 Like a magnet Seoul draws in the metal of combat. Marine tank and infantry teams finally break into the city south of the Capitol placing the 7th Marines in a position to attack north or east into the Railroad station. The 1st Marines and 187th are also able to get into the city, but rapidly find themselves opposed by 6 NKPA bns when the hill defenses empty to reinforce the city blocks. Continuing it's successful advance the ROK Marines and 2 US bns break the last units of the 9th NKPA Inf Div leaving them only a days march from Suwon and its airfield. GT10 Bloody fighting in Seoul continues to gain little. The 7th Marines take severe losses trying to surround the Capitol building. Far to the south Suwon falls - and with intel increasing that the NK 105th Tank Div is nearby, holding the city will be key to keeping the large force far from Seoul. GT11 In a final preparation for attacking the Capitol, massive airstrikes flatten the city blocks southeast of the key area allowing 2 more US bns to move up into attack positions. Only a narrow route to the northeast is open for supplies and reinforcements to reach the NKPA defenders in the Capitol. GT12-14 For 3 solid days US air and artillery repeatedly bombards the Capitol keeping the defenders disorganized. Unrelenting attacks slowly bleed the positions of N Korean troops, but only when the Capitol building is totally cut off with the help of newly arriving ROK troops, does the death knell sound. As the 3 defending bns break, so do the NKPA's overall defenses in the city - now surrounded by US and ROK soldiers. It will be several more days of fighting before the city is cleared, but the Capitol can now be prepared for the triumphant 'return' of MacArthur. US Tactical Victory with 24 VPs
