Jason Roach - Nov 8, 2005 7:24 am (#11106 Total: 11139) Four Lost Battles Tournament: DENNEWITZ OSG's Four Lost Battles Tournament. DENNEWITZ. The championship game was the Dennewitz battle between me and Jon Hipp. I was the French. I have not spent a lot of time on Dennewitz but it may be my favorite of the four battles presented in the game. It is a very wild affair where both sides seem to attack and defend while maneuvering through the hills, roads, towns, open fields and trails that abound; a very interesting situation. Considering that the system calculates victory based on losses, demoralization, victory hexes, and card VPs, I only needed one more VP town hex to win, that is how tight Dennewitz seems to be. Jon did a great job of bringing his large units to bear. At the right time he managed to hold ground, delay my reinforcements and buy time. My IV Corp coming from the left was not able to make the end-round on his flanks in time in order to make a final push in the center. We had battled back and forth in that area for most of the game, but I had lost enough strength to where I had to be cautious and await additional forces to threaten his right. It was very cool that the game has this type of battlefield tension and at still somewhat an operational level (but with a tactical flavor); for me, that scale works incredibly well. In hindsight, I should have pushed more on my right, but also I failed to bring back one of my commanders who was at the tip of the formation strung out along the road in the center. (The French start with one of their formations strung out on the road in the middle of the map.) This left a good portion of my troops in the rear of that line attempting to maneuver without proper command, which cost me a lot of time. As far as the overall game-play, the game is a blast. Although rather minor, I do like the modifications that came out after publication a lot. The current versions of the rules are available on OSG’s site, but as published they are very tight and the system is smooth. All new games are shipping with those modifications and again you can tell that they put a lot of time and thought into the system. Four Lost Battles may be my favorite of the OSG line to date. The replay value is tremendous and after the game, you are often left with that “what-if” feeling that drives you to break open the map and go through the possibilities after a match. Something I did following that last game. In any event, a very fine game and a lot of fun. Congrats to Jon Hipp for Tournament win! -Jason
