INTRODUCTION Lights, please. Presenting: BLUE Vs GRAY, The Civil War Card Game. PREFACE: A Call to Arms It took a couple of months for both sides to get armies in the field after the shelling of Ft. Sumter. Messrs. Lincoln and Davis opt, by mutual agreement, to play the Historical Scenario and to use all of the Optional Rules. They arrange their cards in numerical order and proceed. USA starts the game with Cards #1-#9 and one Supply point. CSA starts the game with Cards #1-#10. Historical deployment for both sides: DEPLOYMENT USA DEPLOYMENT USA EASTERN THEATER 1.) DEPT. On CSA Turn 1 the South may not attack. * J.S. Barnard was chief engineer and “father” of the Wash. D.C. forts. USA CHAPTER I First Blood Lincoln suspended Habeas Corpus (4/61) and called for volunteers. By July, McDowell was not really ready to attack, but was under frantic political pressure to do so. As he moved south towards Richmond, he was met near Manassas Junction by Beauregard and J.E. Johnston. It also makes "game-sense" to place Beauregard over J.E. Johnston: McDowell’s initiative is only 1, so he can’t beat Beauregard in a Generals’ Battle. So why take a one-in six-risk of losing the politically disfavored J.E. permanently if the CSA gets routed? Better to put at risk the less-valuable Beauregard. CSA CHAPTER I The Lost Opportunity The rebel victory at Manassas created an opportunity for the South to grab Washington and end things early. But Davis would issue neither the necessary supplies nor permission. This caused considerable controversy and exacerbated tensions between Davis and Beauregard/J.E. Johnston. Stonewall Jackson made the fatalistic comment that the way to the US capital lay open and if God willed that he should take Washington, he would, and if He didn’t, he wouldn’t. (The arguable role of God, in this case, is simulated by the special Historical Scenario rules.) SUPPLY: 0 DEPLETED: 1 (xx Stonewall [Jackson]) STEP 1 Draw xx Lovell, xx Pillow, xx Cheatham, A.S. Henry and Donelson Floyd does not rate his own card. For one thing, he was never a corps commander, officially, although he did a very brief stint in divisional command--hardly worth noting. (For another thing, no CSA player would play the card!) He commanded the post at Ft. Donelson, but the breakout attack was handled by Buckner. Its potential success was undone by Floyd, who, with Pillow, abandoned his post and snuck out of the fort, leaving Buckner to surrender two divisions. A.S. Johnston also comes in for some criticism for dividing his forces in the first place. So although Buckner is commander of the post in BvG terms, don’t blame him for what is about to happen below . . . SUPPLY: 1 DEPLETED: 0 DEPLOYMENT EASTERN THEATER 1.) DEPT. (Of course, Buckner suffered worse than normal losses.) *** The decision not to defend Nashville has long been criticized. CSA CHAPTER IV Preparing the Counterstroke A.S. Johnston had learned the hard way that this wasn’t a war a man could win by dividing his forces too widely. Very Well. He would pull back to Northern Mississippi, concentrate, and plan an offensive to smash Grant’s slowly advancing army and drive the Federals clear back to Cairo. Johnston and McClellan’s commands are not really as weak as they might seem: Both have most of their armies “in their hands”. [Note: Strictly speaking, the Cumberland Gap issue wasn’t resolved quite as quickly as in BvG. But I simply refused to force players to keep track for 3 to 4 turns, even for an Optional Rule; 2 turns was bad enough. (Purists may dicker, as always.) The story I care about is simply that the South occupied it initially, but it wound up in Union hands (until fall ‘62, anyway). All of this, as at New Berne, was activity below the division/corps level.] CSA CHAPTER V The Hornet’s Nest As Grant advanced down the Tennessee River toward Corinth, he was lulled into a false sense of security. A.S. Johnston’s newly organized Army of the Mississippi was about to appear, as if out of nowhere, to strike his divided forces and attempt to drive the Northern armies clear out of Tennessee. The day’s end saw Johnston dead and near-disaster for Grant. Sherman remarked gloomily on the beating they had taken; Grant is said to have replied, “Whip ‘em tomorrow, though.” SUPPLY: 0 DEPLETED: 0 DEPLOYMENT EASTERN THEATER 1.) J.E. Johnston’s value is carefully calculated to make him almost (but not quite) worth a “Miracle.” When considering losses, remember, generally speaking, there are more men in a USA “step” than a CSA “step”. (The “Reserve Corps” took big losses on day 1 and was ultimately absorbed by other units.) USA CHAPTER VI Grant Strikes Back. What a difference a day can make. To make a long story short, Grant, joined the previous evening by Buell’s army, caught Beauregard flatfooted and drove him from the field. However, Grant’s failure to follow up and press on to Corinth played into the hands of his enemies. It cost him his command; he found himself replaced by the punctilious Henry Halleck. By then, Grant would be back in the saddle. ** Note: Bragg ordered the evacuation to get more men together. So it results, in game-terms, in a map-card eventually being replaced by troops, which means, in the long run, the CSA has another unit, but a less fortified coast. Lovell is widely accused of letting things slide at New Orleans. *** Boyd fans may assume the die roll was a 5/3 rather than a 4/2, so Belle can save the day! CSA CHAPTER VI The South Catches Its Breath Shiloh was a shock for both sides, and the South did not respond aggressively. Beauregard contented himself with rebuilding his army, while back east J.E. Only c. 40,000 were involved on either side (notice how two cautious commanders/players combine to reduce troops engaged). CSA losses slightly exceeded USA’s. As you can see, the battle was rather confused. The resulting disruption of the (CSA) AOTP is best reflected by the loss of Johnston and the temporary splitting up (in BvG terms) of the top CSA eastern command. G.W. Smith took command of the army but was replaced by Lee seven hours later. Richmond was in great peril. Would McClellan take advantage? ** The Dept. of East Tenn. (inter alia) was somewhat scattered. *** This card also covers D.R. Jones until 7/62: (As it worked out, three divisions eventually become two, with considerable shuffling of brigades, naturally) by the Antietam campaign. USA CHAPTER VIII The Road to Richmond If McClellan learned anything from the Fair Oaks experience, it should have been that alacrity was in order. But McClellan’s Pinkertons overestimated the rebels some fivefold (and McClellan was deliberately dragging his feet in an unsuccessful attempt to blackmail Lincoln into diverting I xxx to the AOTP). Lincoln is said to have allowed that if McClellan had a million men, he’d claim the rebels had two million and scream for three. During this welcome delay, the as-yet-unproven "Granny" Lee, a/k/a the “King of Spades” would begin to hammer together his newly-styled Army of Northern Virginia (ANV). Mainstream historians tend to credit Lee with having removed the immediate threat to Richmond, but it would appear that this effect was due more to McClellan’s peculiar psychology than to the situation in the field. After all, federal armies thumped Lee in most of the engagements, avoided being split, and (probably) suffered fewer casualties (V xxx [Porter] did particularly well). There is no doubt that this was one of Lee’s messier battles (and not one that his fans tend to point to). In any case, he failed in his objective of sundering the AOTP and inflicting a major defeat. So, in game terms (and in terms of reality, actually) IV xxx loses men as an indirect result of the battle and winds up in cadre afterwards. Remnants of IV Corps were remained with the Dept. of Va. When McClellan transferred north. CSA CHAPTER VIII (Part ii) Vallandigham’s Last Laugh After the shock of the suspension of Habeas Corpus sank in, many who were against Lincoln and his policies began to take action, “loyal” and less so, to oppose the Northern war effort. They became known as “Copperheads” for the extremists among them who formed secret societies (e.g., Knights of the Golden Circle) and used clipped copper (bronze, actually) cents as identification. Foremost of the moderate, mainstream Copperheads was Clement L. Vallandigham, a Democratic ex-representative, (and gadfly) who publicly condemned emancipation, conscription, and the war in general. He was targeted successfully for defeat in his 1862 house run. In the summer of 1863, Burnside got fed up with Vallandigham’s shenanigans and tossed him in jail. He was convicted of various crimes and banished--to the South. He slipped into Canada via blockade runner soon afterwards and ran an 1863 campaign for governor of Ohio (in absentia). Lincoln saw to it that he was defeated (by 100,000 army votes), but such affairs were a considerable distraction. Vallandigham snuck back to Ohio, but Lincoln chose not to arrest him. V. sided with McClellan (and helped radicalize the Democrats) in the attempt to unseat Lincoln in 1864. The rebels made a joke about a dogfight: “That dog ain’t retreatin’; he’s jes’ ‘changin’ his base.’” Lincoln was thoroughly disgusted with Little Mac’s “achievements.” He removed the latter from overall command of the army. Jackson drove them from the field, with considerable losses on both sides, but accomplished virtually nothing strategically. Both sides claimed victory. In the west, Bedford Forrest began a continual series of highly effective raids which lasted, with few interruptions, throughout the entire war. In addition he was a drunk, a braggart, and had serious conflicts with his corps commanders, who generally hated him and held him in contempt. Clearly stung, Pope hastened his army northwards to chastise Jackson, who had, by this time, taken up a strong defensive position. Pope reported that Jackson was isolated and victory was at hand. Meanwhile, Longstreet came quietly up on Pope’s left and delivered a crushing flank attack, folding the federal army in on itself, producing a great rout. Lincoln was a little reluctant, but bowed to pressure and confirmed the “Young Napoleon” in command of the Army of the Potomac. “Once again I have been called on to save the nation,” the latter crowed. In fact, McClellan’s recall was greatly cheered by his former troops and, to his credit, he did a highly creditable job rebuilding the army and restoring its morale. Off the field, McClellan was sublime. It was on the field of battle that his shortcomings became evident. When Lee’s subordinates criticized Lee’s invasion plan as overreaching, his one-word answer was always, “McClellan.” SUPPLY: 2 (Raided last turn) DEPLETED: 4 (III xxx, IX xxx, V xxx, XII xxx) DEPLOYMENT EASTERN THEATER 1.) Bragg and Kirby Smith moved into Kentucky, seizing the eastern portion of the state. But instead of striking into Ohio, Bragg, dogged by Buell, dithered while establishing a rebel government in Lexington. Lee launched a bold invasion of Maryland. His plan was to strike north from the Shenandoah and split his command, seizing Harper’s Ferry. Then he would bypass Baltimore and blow the Iron Bridge at Harrisburg, severing the Union railnet and bringing the war to a triumphant conclusion. He might well have succeeded had not Jackson’s staff, in a rare breach of security, somehow allowed a copy of his plan intended for D.H. Hill to fall into McClellan’s hands. It revealed that McClellan’s army was actually closer to each section of Lee’s divided army than they were to each other. Little Mac exclaimed, “If with this paper I cannot whip Bobby Lee, I will be willing to go home.” Lee’s invasion was doomed, and he knew it. He desperately recalled Jackson, and drew up his forces at Antietam Creek, near the town of Sharpsburg. SUPPLY: 0 DEPLETED: 5 (xx Hindman [Withers], xx Breckinridge, xx Stonewall [J.R. But it was a strategic disaster of epic proportions. Only the surpassing skill of Lee and his subordinates (and McClellan’s gross incompetence) saved the Army of Northern Virginia from even greater catastrophe. But, be that as it may, Lee’s invasion failed--he was forced to bring his army (what was left of it) back to Virginia without a victory. And he lost thousands of more men in the battle than the federals. These casualties had an effect out of proportion to their raw numbers on Lee’s already-depleted army, as whole command structures were destroyed and entire divisions ceased to be. Hood, for example, when asked by Jackson where his division was, answered, “Dead on the field, ” and D.H. Hill’s division was annihilated at Bloody Lane. The political consequences were even worse: Emancipation became politically possible; the specter of foreign intervention receded. Unlike McClellan, Burnside was willing to fight. Unfortunately, he proved unable to win. He moved quickly, but then dithered for three weeks waiting for pontoons (etc.) to be brought up, giving Lee ample time to interpose. Burnside’s clumsy, piecemeal assault on Lee’s position south of Fredericksburg is notorious in the annals of military history. Burnside was determined to lead a last charge, personally, and had to be restrained by his officers. After the battle, Lee remarked “It is good that war is so terrible, or else we should grow too fond of it. That night, the northern lights blazed across the Virginia sky, a rare occurrence. Lee’s army believed it was the angels in heaven celebrating their victory. SUPPLY: 1 (raided last turn) DEPLETED: 1 (XX xxx) DEPLOYMENT EASTERN THEATER 1.) DEPT. Morale in the north was poor, and even many of the war’s staunchest supporters were gloomily predicting an armistice in the upcoming year. Rosecrans moved toward Chattanooga, defended by Bragg while Grant sent Sherman to strike directly at Vicksburg, which was defended by the badly outnumbered Pemberton. Only the northern and western area of Virginia, Western Tennessee and the northern tip of Mississippi was under northern control. Furthermore, Lincoln had been badly set back during the 1862 elections. On the other hand, the Confederacy was experiencing shortages and its own brand of internal squabbling as well (states’ rights cuts both ways). But rebel prospects remained good, morale high, for the most part. Yes, there had been failures, especially in the beginning of the year, but there had been many successes in the months since. It is said that the night before, he practiced signing his name over and over with a firm hand, so that no one would ever be able to say, “He hesitated.” It was a controversial move, and modern historians are overfond of pointing out that the proclamation did not, on the day it was signed, free a single slave. But it changed the entire character of the war. It extinguished the prospects for British recognition of the Confederacy and it set in motion internal conflict in the South, not only among the slaves, themselves, but also the poor whites in Eastern Tennessee and Western Virginia. Meanwhile, Burnside was determined to redeem his reputation and resolved to outflank Lee’s seemingly impregnable position at Fredericksburg. But the weather turned heavily against Burnside and his men. As the AOTP floundered in the mud, the rebels jeered them from across the Rapidan, erecting signs such as “Yanks, If You Can’t Place Your Pontoons Yourself, We Will Send Help”. Eventually, the futility of the attempt became all too apparent and Burnside was forced to cancel the ill-starred operation. USA CHAPTER XVII Chancellorsville In the west, the situation was a muddle. Banks’ men fought bravely at Port Hudson, but failed to capture it. Meanwhile, Grant was attempting to outflank the Vicksburg position. Sherman, McPherson and McClernand floundered in their attempts to dig a series of canals to bypass Vicksburg. And to cap it off, XV Corps was blocked while being ferried down the Yazoo (naval support proving more of a liability than an asset). Most of the casualties involved in these operations were due to miserable conditions and disease. Meanwhile, Fighting Joe Hooker boasted he would be in Richmond by summer. And the prospects were not unfavorable. Hooker made a dazzling march that put his army past Lee’s position at Fredericksburg, and Lee was weakened by the absence of Longstreet’s corps. But the dense, tangled terrain, Hooker’s famous loss of nerve, and Jackson’s even more famous flank march put paid the attempt. Staggered by his defeat, Hooker pulled back across the Rappahannock. Nonetheless, Lee’s army suffered severe losses, most notably, Stonewall Jackson, who was severely wounded by his own pickets, and died of pneumonia a few days later. This time ‘round, Manassas was in federal hands and Lee sent Ewell north from the Shenandoah to prepare the way for the rest of the ANV. Note that Hooker is therefore forced to cover Washington, so the long-suffering VIII Corps was thrown in to defend. Actually, Harpers Ferry, itself was not occupied, but Ewell’s victory at 2nd Winchester effectively gave the ANV control over the area. Note Ewell attaches to Lee, then detaches (after absorbing units). This counts as a free-transfer. USA CHAPTER XVIII Watershed At this point in the war, each side was seriously threatening the other: Lee was poised for his second strike north, his ultimate objective the same as it had been in the summer of 1862: The Iron Bridge at Harrisburg, lynchpin of the northern railnet. But on the other hand, Grant was preparing his decisive move to cut off Vicksburg. He bypassed the fortress to the south and struck at the vital crossroads of Jackson. J.E. Johnston and Pemberton were divided and poorly organized, and Grant was able, by dint of force, to occupy the rebel capital and drive Pemberton back towards the formidable defenses of Vicksburg. Also of note is Grierson’s famous raid, generally considered the most effective of its kind on the northern side. Johnston comes in for criticism for not having united his forces to oppose Grant. In game terms, this would have given him a fighting chance, though putting Johnston at 1/3 risk of a rout (and elimination). CSA CHAPTER XVIII Gettysburg, Act I A week or so before Gettysburg, J.E. Johnston temporarily reoccupied Jackson, but he lacked the resources to press Grant and break the siege, and then almost immediately evacuated the city, without a fight, once Vicksburg fell. So in game terms he is not considered to be in control of Jackson Meanwhile, Lee’s invasion had brought him to York and Carlisle, just a short hop away from his main strategic objective: the Iron Bridge at Harrisburg. Neither side had planned to fight at Gettysburg, but A.P. Hill’s pickets encountered Meade’s cavalry, a fight ensued, and Lee called Ewell and Longstreet southward. More units piled in and a battle developed. After Hill’s initial setback at Herr’s Farm, he and Ewell outflanked and defeated Meade’s I and XI corps, sending them reeling back through Gettysburg. The much-loved I Corps commander, Reynolds died early in the action. Things boded well for Lee. But that evening, Ewell failed to press on to Meade’s northern flank, anchored on Cemetery Hill, and on the second day, he was halted by XXII Corps. Meanwhile, Longstreet was slow in getting in position on Meade’s southern flank. When he struck the exposed III Corps, he met with initial success, but Warren saw the danger and managed to rush elements of V Corps into the battle barely in time to save Little Round Top and prevent the unhinging of Meade’s position on Cemetery Ridge. Having failed to crush Meade’s flanks, Lee regrouped his forces and made plans to smash the federal center the following day. Sticking with the original playtest siege rules would have covered this subtlety, but their inclusion would have added pages of nasty rules. Generally speaking, a siege is handled as an attack by the besiegers, even in cases where the defender attacks outward to break the siege, such as at Chattanooga (11/63) and Nashville (12/64). ** Lee’s caution (fewer casualties at the expense of not winning a Soldiers’ Battle), i.e., his failure to press Ewell to continue his initial attack and to throw in his reserves, Lee may well have passed up the opportunity for victory on the first day. (He might even have withdrawn further, thus avoiding a major engagement, which wisdom has also been questioned.) USA CHAPTER XIX Defender of Vicksburg Meade had done well enough, so far, but the battle was far from over. The Army of the Potomac spent the night of July 2nd digging in and preparing for the final onslaught sure to come the following day. Meanwhile, at Vicksburg, Grant, in spite of his success at Jackson, was not doing well. He had cut off the city, but two attempts in late May to storm the fortifications failed utterly. and two further attempts to explode mines under fortifications (one in late June, the other on July 1, the same day as the start of the Gettysburg battles) likewise came to nothing. Pemberton had by this time acquired the nomen “Defender of Vicksburg”. SUPPLY: 0 DEPLETED: 8 (I xxx, III xxx, V xxx, VIII xxx, XII xxx, XIII xxx, XVII xxx, XIX xxx) DEPLOYMENT EASTERN THEATER 1.) McClernand’s failed assault caused Grant to recommit XVII Corps, causing unnecessary casualties and great bitterness all ‘round. CSA CHAPTER XIX Pickett’s Charge Ed Johnson’s attack on Culp’s hill met with some success, but failed to break Meade’s far right flank. Stuart, who had been ordered to strike Meade from behind, had already been halted by Meade’s cavalry, which, under Buford and Custer/Gregg, had performed splendidly during the battle (no thanks to Pleasanton). Lee, against the advice of his subordinates, had decided the AOTP was demoralized and that Meade had concentrated his forces on his flanks. Therefore the ANV’s best opportunity was to smash the federal center. Unfortunately for Lee, Union morale was not broken and Meade had outguessed him and concentrated his forces in his center, on Cemetery Ridge. Pickett’s charge was a fiasco, from the inadequate artillery preparations to the massacre that ensued. Many were wiped out on the approach. A few rebels managed to pierce the union line, but were hurled back or captured. All in all, the battle of Gettysburg was a great triumph for the northern cause. But so far as New Yorkers were concerned, the momentous victory was, by analogy, a sort of Tet Offensive, and they took to the streets, rioting, looting, burning, lynching--for Peace. (Especially considering the xx Hood special rule.) Lee may be criticized for immediately forcing things to a head rather than regrouping his army, pulling up stakes, and either breaking contact with Meade or marching around his left flank (as Longstreet urged). And yet (again in game terms), the South is going to need every supply point it can get its hands on. Had Lee’s attack succeeded, the CSA would have been in a very strong position. Although Diplomatic Victory is no longer a possibility at this point), a strike into Indiana or Ohio by Bragg (from Cumberland Gap) just might have put it in the bag for the rebs, once and for all. ** This is an analog. Think of it more as the militia being “used up” in Port Hudson and new units being raised on the eastern coast. In fact, Gardner reduced his garrison by around 10,000 men following Banks’ attack. USA CHAPTER XX The Fall of Vicksburg In spite of Meade’s victory, he failed to pursue Lee with vigor. Lincoln was “distressed immeasurably” with this decision and considered getting rid of Meade, but (fortunately) decided otherwise. In the mean time, his second invasion of the north roundly defeated, Lee withdrew his battered army to northern Virginia, again taking up his position at Fredericksburg. Meanwhile, Pemberton, short of supplies and under continual pressure by the tenacious Grant, finally surrendered the vital fortress of Vicksburg on the 4th of July, a day after Pickett’s charge. Four days later, Gardner, now hopelessly isolated, surrendered Port Hudson, and the Mississippi River was finally in Union hands, splitting the Confederacy and blocking the vital flow of contraband coming from the unblockaded ports of Mexico. Lincoln’s “key” was finally in his pocket. Yet the south was far from defeated, and the war far from over. Therefore Longstreet was sent to the western theater with orders to join with Bragg. But before Longstreet arrived, Rosecrans was on the move and Bragg was determined to respond. The cards indicate which was under him for academic interest, but his troops were mostly involved in Longstreet’s maneuvers, so he is not included at this time. USA CHAPTER XXI Rosecrans, having occupied Chattanooga without a fight, and believing that Bragg was on the retreat, made started moving southeast, in the direction of Atlanta. But Bragg was waiting for him. He had sent for reinforcements from J.E. Johnston while at the same time Longstreet and two divisions were on the way by rail from the eastern theater. As at Murfreesboro, Rosecrans was took the strategic offensive and Bragg seized the tactical initiative. Bragg launched his initial assaults just before the arrival of Longstreet. But poor communications (or worse) got in the way of Bragg’s plans, and a day’s inconclusive fighting followed. That evening, Longstreet arrived. Polk’s attack the next morning was turned back, but by then Longstreet’s corps was in position and preparing to attack. The battle was far from over. In spite of the victory at Gettysburg, there was little action in the east other than a series of actions against Charleston. Success in this venture would not only seal off Charleston, once and for all, but would allow the north eventually to field a sizable army to pierce the soft southern interior. Unfortunately, the attempts failed, Gilmore’s black troops of X Corps proving themselves superior to their white counterparts, in a number of valiant, legendary, but futile assaults on the impregnable fortifications. X Corps made some progress, reducing Ft. Sumter to rubble and capturing several shore batteries, but Charleston remained in rebel hands. Wood opened a hole in the federal center, and Longstreet’s men, who had been preparing for an attack anyway, poured through the gap and sent the Army of the Cumberland reeling back. But Thomas, aided by the timely arrival of Granger’s Reserve Corps, rallied and “stood like a rock”, and saved what was beginning to look like a disastrous situation. To this day, Chickamauga is considered a federal defeat. Yes under the circumstances, one is led to wonder why. Yes, the Army of the Cumberland was disrupted and sent reeling. Yes, the rebels advanced as many federals fled. Some even go so far as to say the battle gave the Confederacy “new life’ after the defeat at Gettysburg. Yet after the dust had cleared, the hard facts remained: Failure to destroy the Army of the Cumberland, failure to take Chattanooga, and even greater casualties than the defenders. He was subsequently shuffled into other assignments. *** Preston’s Division was broken up and parceled out after the battle; losses reflect this factor. USA CHAPTER XXII Meade Backs Down In the fall of 1863, Meade made an attempt to come to grips with Lee while Longstreet was out west. The first clash was a tactical offensive by A.P. Hill, at Bristoe, followed by Meade’s advance south. But Lee got in position behind Mine Run first. Rather than suffer another Fredericksburg, Meade called off the offensive, commenting, “His object is to prevent my advance, and in the meantime send more troops to Bragg. This was a deep game, and I am free to admit that in the playing of it he has got the advantage of me.” Meanwhile, Grant joined forces with the Army of the Cumberland, at Chattanooga, but (uncharacteristically) paused. And supplies in the city did go a bit short. (The artillerymen ate their horses and requisitioned the cavalry for more. The latter … declined.) But Bragg was living in a dream world; his chances were slim. Rather than pulling back and rebuilding, he sent Longstreet on a fool’s errand to Knoxville and exposed his remaining forces to defeat. Grant combined the A. of the Tenn. And the A. of the Cumberland and overwhelmed Bragg’s meager force. Losses were quite light, but for the first time during the war, a major Confederate army fled the field. To make matters worse, Longstreet bungled his deployment Knoxville and this resulted in unnecessary casualties. Others swap xx Hindman and xx Stevenson. It makes no difference either way. Others place xx Cleburne under Breckinridge, but at the time of the battle, Cleburne held the extreme right of the rebel line (with Hardee) while Breckinridge held on the far left. ** Players will complain that, as cavalry is often withdrawn, it has “no effect”. But it can have great impact even so. In this case, Bragg’s cavalry keeps Grant from a 10-point superiority. Yes, Wheeler is withdrawn (as he was, historically), but not before US withdrawals which would not have occurred without Wheeler’s initial presence. This factor alone is what gives Bragg any chance of winning at all. (He doesn’t, of course, but that’s another story.) USA CHAPTER XXIII Meridian In February 1864, Sherman made an attempt to cut the South in half through central Mississippi. He set out for Meridian (accompanied by Blair and Hurlbut), opposed by Polk and some cavalry under Forrest and S.D. Lee. Sherman temporarily occupied the town and burned a few warehouses, but with his own cavalry overdue, he withdrew on Feb. 20 and returned to Vicksburg. Both sides claimed victory in the campaign, but the bottom line remains that Sherman’s proposed Mississippi campaign was abandoned and Meridian remained in CSA hands. Johnston. Johnston, for one, understood (better than Davis) exactly what needed to be done: He knew that the last, best hope of the Confederacy was to hang onto Atlanta until the 1864 elections. Assuming that he could be pull this off (and assuming Lee could keep ahold of Richmond), there was every chance the war might be brought to a successful negotiated conclusion. At the very worst, highly favorable terms could be gained for readmittance. But for any of that even to be a possibility, Little Mac (and his “peace on the basis of separation” Democratic party platform) would have to win the election. And for that to happen, the South would have to hold on to its vital centers long enough for the northern electorate to be convinced of the futility and unwilling to continue paying the terrible cost of continuing the war. USA CHAPTER XXIV Standing Firm The American Civil War has often been compared with the First World War. Usually those who have done so point to the American conflict as the ascendancy of the defense and the natural precursor to trench warfare. But there is another striking similarity, namely that almost until the very end of either war the losing side might very well have won. Germany was in a winning position in March 1918. Likewise, the South had every chance of victory, even as late in the day as the Summer of 1864. All the Confederacy had to do was hold out until the 1864 elections and the election of McClellan over Lincoln. It is true that McClellan claimed (after the fact) that he would have vigorously prosecuted the war. Yet one cannot help thinking that had Little Mac shown the same vigor as he had during his time in the field, Southern independence would have been assured (not to mention the Democratic party platform of “peace on the basis of separation”). The Spring and Summer of 1864 were, on the whole, terrible times for Lincoln and the Northern cause. Lincoln was losing by 25 points, according to the polls of the day. Everyone expected his defeat. All of the major newspapers, even those who extolled “Father Abraham”, believed it. The vast majority of northerners believed it. The House and Senate believed it. Lincoln’s cabinet and closest advisors believed it. And Lincoln himself believed it. Disaster followed disaster in the field. Johnston, in spite of a couple of close shaves (e.g., Resaca, Snake Creek), traded space for time and managed to keep his army virtually undiminished, and to repulse Sherman at Kennesaw Mountain. Forrest defeated federal cavalry under Sturgis. There was only one fly in the ointment. Although Lee had won serious tactical victories against Grant, the latter’s extreme doggedness and determination resulted in forward movement after the Wilderness battles. A rousing cheer ran through the entire AOTP when the orders came to continue the advance. And, in spite of victories in the field, the ANV had been bled white. Lincoln had shrewdly remarked after the federal disaster at Fredericksburg that if he could only have a solid week of Fredericksburgs, the north would win the war. A year and a half later, Grant gave Lincoln his week of Fredericksburgs. But even so, the defenses of Richmond still stood firm. Stewart [Clayton]) SUPPLY: 0 USA CHAPTER XXV Gone With the Wind That summer of 1864 began well for the south, Grant’s outflanking approach to Richmond had ground to a halt. After the bloody repulse at Cold Harbor, Warren skillfully screened and feinted Lee north, Grant’s and the rest of the army slipped across Lee’s front and crossed the James on pontoons. But the plan fell apart when Baldy Smith insisted on “halting to consolidate his gains” outside Petersburg. The north could not sustain such losses indefinitely, but the South could not afford them in the first place. Said Grant, “I will fight it out on this line if it takes all summer.” When wags compared Lee and Grant with the Kilkenny Cats, the latter is said to have remarked, “Our cat has the longer tail”. By the end of July, Hood’s recklessness had already cost Davis his best chance to hold Atlanta. And then Sheridan seized the Shenandoah Valley once and for all. This occurred a month after the capture of Atlanta and historians are prone to forget the huge effect his great victory had on the election. Atlanta was far away, but the Shenandoah was “the breadbasket of the Confederacy” and located right on the doorstep of the Union. A thrice-used invasion route northward. It was not until the Union victories at Cedar Creek that Lincoln could finally rest easy. Independence finally seemed within grasp. Many Southerners firmly believed that God was, in the eleventh hour, finding a way to answer their fervent prayers. And in three short months, all lay in ruins, hopes shattered and replaced by a sense of desperation and impending doom. Lee continued to hang on by his teeth, the only confederate commander truly to achieve his military objective, in his case the defense of Richmond and preservation of the ANV. But Early had been sent reeling, and Hood not only failed to hold Atlanta, but wrecked his army in the process, losing more men in a week than his predecessor had during his entire tenure. However, operating on the premise that it ain’t over till it’s over, Hood had two logical courses of action. He could hold his forces together as well as he could and try to make life hard for Sherman. Or he could strike an a critical objective (such as Memphis) and win a great victory in time to turn public opinion against Lincoln before the election. An “October Surprise”. Hood did neither. Instead, he made preparations to invade Tennessee and did not oppose Sherman’s upcoming march to the sea. The Loss of the Shenandoah and the wreckage Sherman had made of the southern railnet was causing belts to tighten. Hopes were fading fast. If there was to be any hope at all, it would be necessary for Hood to keep what was left of his army in one piece. This, however, was not to be. Hood swung his army south of Chattanooga and marched into Tennessee, a very poorly considered direction of attack. The ill-starred Nashville campaign seemed doomed from the start. And doomed it was. After the Battles of Franklin and Nashville Hood’s divisions were mere empty shells. The Army of the Tennessee had, for all practical purposes, ceased to exist as an effective fighting force. Sherman was about to begin a whirlwind of destruction through the Carolinas. Grant wrote to him, ”Your confidence in being able to march up and join this army pleases me, and I believe it can be done. The effect of such a campaign will be to disorganize the South, and prevent the organization of new armies from their broken fragments.” But in spite of heavy pressure, Lee managed to hang onto Petersburg and Richmond, and Butler’s attack on Ft. The storyboard will continue one more turn to the bitter end (i.e., the US has taken all 8 CSA Objectives) for academic purposes. ** This is a sort of “cross theater” Atlantic theater attack. Sherman begins the turn tracing supply to Savannah (and then by sea). He then bypasses his way to Raleigh, which is supplied by Norfolk—which is disconnected from Savannah, and he opts to “cross theaters” and accept supply from Norfolk. CSA CHAPTER XXVIII Anticlimax The south was beaten. Some recalled Frederick the Great’s plight, and deluded themselves with the false notion that some sort of latter-day Torgau might somehow save the south. Others plotted to kidnap Lincoln and ransom him for any peace short of surrender. But none of this would have saved the South. At this point the Confederacy couldn’t even afford victories. J.E. Johnston made the last major CSA attacks during the war. After initial success, he was held and the situation stabilized. But not even victory could have produced any lasting results. Lee abandoned Richmond but he was mostly surrounded from the start and never managed to break contact with Grant, who forced the surrender of the entire ANV on April 12. The loss of Lee’s army was the outward confirmation that the jig was up. A week later, Lincoln was dead. Meanwhile, Forrest’s depleted forces had been unable to prevent the occupation of Selma on Apr. 2. The fall of Mobile (April 12) would have been big news but for Lee’s surrender. After hearing of the loss of the ANV, J.E. Johnston asked Grant for terms (April 17-18 ), and the war was, for all practical purposes, over. Johnston, just hearing of Lincoln’s assassination, declared it “a great calamity” for the south. He and Sherman became fast friends after the war. Johnston knew full well the extent of destruction that Sherman had caused. But he also realized that although property was devastated, there was no organized massacre of civilians—a known pattern in previous wars. (Those who lived through it bore Sherman great, abiding resentment. But they lived.) Minor surrenders trickled in for the next several weeks. Stand Waite (“Degataga”) was the last CSA general to hand over his sword (June 25, 1865). VI and IX corps participated in the occupation of Petersburg and also fought at Sayler’s Creek during the pursuit to Appomattox. Five Forks did not in and of itself liberate Petersburg, but it made its occupation inevitable. Lee will try to hold off Grant one more time, then retreat to North Carolina and join forces with J.E. Johnston. (Lee was still dreaming of Togau.) ** Cox led the operation in the field, while Banks was District commander. When J.E. Johnston finally throws in the towel at Durham, there are no more rebel armies of any real size left. In game terms, not a single CSA card remains in play, not even Forrest. The war is over. But within a week of Lee’s surrender Lincoln was dead and hope for a smooth reunion was all but gone. Occupation and Reconstruction (to 1877) are to be followed by decades of intense bitterness, lynch law, and Jim Crow. Had the war ended earlier, had Lincoln survived, things would likely have gone easier for all involved.
