I recently played Baron's War, a new Clash of Arms Game by designer Rob Markham. Factors I liked: 1)An opponent's movement might cause YOUR cavalry to initiate a charge, whether you want them to or not. 2)It takes forever to totally eliminate a unit but morale rules might render it useless, cause it to retreat, etc. 3)Terrain effects include movment factors and combat factors for going uphill or downhill 4) Maps (there are two) are small, would fit on any table. 5) Lots of charts and things to check, but not so many that they would put a player off too much 6) Initiative system is sort of bid based, with factors based on the command rating of leaders and your plan of dividing up your command points at the beginning of the game 7) Stacking is really not helpful at all, as only the unit on top actually fights. 8) Troops must be within the command range of a leader to be effective, or can only act in a defensive manner. Factors that I did not like: 1) The Table of Contents which is called an index, but is a table of contents instead. (sort of a pet peeve).. 2) Sort of a stand in a line and slug it out game-- initiative system has pros and cons and one con is that can allow you to get surrounded fairly easily. I think the initiative would improve with experience as one learns to more effectively allocate command points. 3) Random allocation of command points (via a chart and a die roll) on game turns AFTER the beginning of the game. The pros outweighed the cons for me and I enjoyed it a lot. David "the preacher" Wilson Making the world safe for churchgoers and gamers at the same time.
