From Roberto Chiavini Battle for the Atlantic (Minden Games) This is a little, nice solitaire game found in Panzerschreck 4, on the Battle of the Atlantic. The player takes the role of the Kriegsmarine, fighting against the Allies (the system). The game comes with a few dozens counters and 40 cards, that you have to cut and paste if you want stronger material. The little map has seven sea zones where combat and operations take place, while there are also several other boxes used to track various aspects of the game. The player put on the zones his U-boats, plus a couple of Condor counters and, possibly, a raider counter too. The aim is to obtain more than 400.000 tons of shipments sunk for 4 consecutive turns, avoiding an Allied victory (that happens if more than half of the U-Boats are sunk in a single turn or if 4 convoys are in the North Atlantic sea zone at the end of a turn). Almost every action is driven by the drawing of the cards, from random events, to placement of naval escorts and air support for the Allies, to production of U-Boats and Allied antisubmarine tecnologies advances. The U-boats may be placed in one of three possible stances, from aggressive to shadowed, with die roll modifiers both for sinking enemy ships that for being caught by the ASW tactics of the Allies. Obviously for a solitaire system, there are several die rolls to be made each turn, but play flows smoothly during the maximum of ten turns of the game (perhaps two hours to finish the game, when you have got the feeling of the system). I found the game very stimulating, fun to play, with several strategical choices for the player and a system that could be hard to beat. All in all, a great little game, worth your time and your money. I rate the game 7 ½ in a 1-10 scale.
