From: Roberto Chiavini Subject: Reviews of Vae Victis TUNISIA 1943 (Vae Victis 1) The game on Vae Victis 1 is called Tunisia 1943 and it is a simulation in two scenarios of the Axis last offensive in Africa and the counteroffensive of the Allies that ended the live of Afrika Korps. It’s a simple, but intriguing game that could be played even in tournament (there are rules for this in a subsequent issue of the French magazine). If you don’t know a Vae Victis game, this is a good issue to start. The graphics are magnificent (especially the units which depicts soldiers or tanks from the various armies – French, Italian, German, American and British – with lot of colors, different to distinguish the various corps). Each unit is rated for attack/defense/movement, not different from several other games, plus a distinctive morale factor, called antitank cohesion. The HQ units give to other combat units in its command range artillery point to spend in each attack. The turn of play start with the decision made by each player to which HQ give a chance to exploitation later in the turn (this varies with the scenario, while the panzer divisionen have always the chance to exploit), then there is movement (with semifluid ZOC), combat (with ratio CRT with step losses, retreat, elimination and loss of ZOC for the units affected), exploitation movement (similar to strategic movement in most other games, i.e. the exploiting units cannot enter enemy ZOC), supply (units out of supply are severely limited in movement and combat). All in all, the game is simple, but not simplistic, the situation is very fluid and the game could be tense and exciting till the end (which normally happens after a couple of hours). The game is good even for solitaire play (with the only important limitation of the assignment of artillery and air strike points to the various attacks). I rate this game 7 ½ on a 1-10 scale.
