From: Ananda Gupta Subject: Sam Grant I received Sam Grant in the mail today. Map is nice - a bit green, without the distinguishing terrain of the Shenandoahs for contrast (as in Bobby Lee). Blocks are as usual, but the labels are different colors. Additionally, there's a set of "update labels" for Bobby Lee, to make the colors consistent. It runs from St. Louis in the NE to Atlanta in the SE, and Cincinnati in the NW to Vicksburg in the SW. No errata was included, but I found a conflict between the rules and the charts within a minute of looking at the components. The rules (p. 6) say cavalry has F1; the charts (and rules p. 13) say cav has F1 on offense and F3 on defense. I can't imagine the chart is correct on that one. River movement and such is the biggest addition. The Union dominated the rivers, and so they are the only ones who can make river moves and invasions. Invading units can also retreat by river, at the cost of double pursuit fire. Finally, there's a campaign game which combines Bobby Lee and Sam Grant. The rules are pretty simple, since SG already has rules for off-board rail transport (used by the Union to transfer units between places like Ohio and Missouri). There are some rules about build point allocation by theater, and you can't transfer HQs from one to the other. More as I assemble and play...I suspect others will chime in as well. Regards, Ananda -- Ananda Gupta agupta@emerald.tufts.edu ...I ask you to meditate once again on the proposition that freedom, classically understood, is the stuff by which we lead satisfying lives. It is as indispensible to happiness as oxygen to life. Much of it has been taken from us. We must reclaim it. --Charles Murray, "What It Means To Be A Libertarian."
