The new edition announces that there are many changes but to find out what they are you must read the new rules and the previous edition rules and compare. It would have been helpful to highlight the changes, since the differences between plain Diplomacy and Machiavelli *are* highlighted. Overall the rules in the new edition are leaner and cleaner. All the supporting material (scenario introductions, biography of Machiavelli etc) is identical to the previous edition. *MAP CHANGES* LAND AREAS Marseilles and Avignon now are joined: Provence (North coast) has disappeared. The Lagoon has disappeared: Venice is now a fortified city in a sea area called 'Venice'. Istria now borders Carniola: Croatia (North coast) has disappeared. The islands between Istria and Dalmatia have gone. Corsica is not a port (this looks a minor oversight to me). Piombino is no longer a 'gateway' between two sea areas (see below). Rome has swallowed up Tivoli and now has a coast. Urbino has swallowed up Romagna. Fornova has swallowed up Pontremoli. Parma has swallowed up Piancenza. Bergamo has swallowed up Brescia. SEA AREAS Western Gulf of Lyons renamed Gulf of Lyons. Eastern Gulf of Lyons renamed Ligurian Sea: Piombino now borders this sea. The Western and Eastern Tyrrhenian Seas have been merged into one area, the Tyrrhenian Sea. Land areas from Piombino down to Naples border this sea. Palermo borders it but not Messina. The Gulf of Naples does not cover Capua any more but now does border Palermo. The Western Med does not border Palermo any more. The Bay of Tunis has been renamed the Central Meditteranean and now borders the Tyrrhenian Sea. *RULES CHANGES* In Basic game can no longer place units in home areas of a conquered country (made an optional rule). Control of an area is established by placement of a marker in the Fall turn *only*. The Lift siege order has been dropped (no great loss). Fleets cannot convoy through a coastal area. Advanced game victory conditions same as those for basic game. Requirement to take one other country is dropped. Bribes may be made from controlled areas which do not contain a unit. Year Chart works on D6 rather than 2xD6. Minor changes to Plague and Famine tables, to accomodate swallowed-up provinces (see above). Restrictions on which special units can be bought by particular countries. *NEW OPTIONAL RULES* The Pope can 'Excommunicate' a player by forbidding other players to talk to that player for a Diplomacy phase. 'Strategic Movement' allows a player to move up to two units through own areas as far as needed, but not into enemy areas without permission. *SCENARIOS* Expansion of States dropped, the Struggle for Dominance split into two scenarios 1499-1512, and 1513-1521. Powers start with some ducats in the Treasury. Alan Poulter
