Although a space station can only be placed in a territory containing units you control (MOD or commander) and although you cannot voluntarily abandon a territory, it is still possible to have a lone space station in a territory due to the use of nuclear command cards and/or diplomatic ones. In this case, it doesn't defend and can be taken over for free but until that happens, the territory is still yours. -- -Rob Avalon Hill/Hasbro Games
