Kerry Anderson - Jan 26, 2004 8:42 am (#2057 Total: 2057) Microgame Design Group Answers from the designer: (1) Must all defenders in a zone with a castle be placed in the castle? Answer: All defenders in a zone receive the +1 dieroll modifier for being in a zone with a castle counter. They do not have to be declared as either inside or outside. Remember, the castle counter really represents a large number of small castles and combat is strategic (see Designer's Notes). (2) If not, may the defender split his forces? This would require that the field army be driven off before the siege can commence Answer: No. Defending forces are not divided (see question #1). (3) Can castle defenders retreat out of the zone? How would that be assumed to be possible? Answer: Yes. Defenders can always retreat, although they may be subject to Cavalry Pursuit. There are no defenders that are specifically "castle defenders". Defending forces are assumed to be occupying and in control of the entire zone until driven out. (4) Can leaders be captured to be exchanged or executed later? I assume not per the rules but it strikes me as a fun idea! Answer: It's not part of the rules, but would probably be a fun house rule. It adds a little diplomacy (and maybe revenge).
