Hello, These questions and answers are taken from a recent discussion on Consimworld. JUSTINIAN RULES QUESTIONS: 1) The rules say that when a defeated/disorg Byantine army receives a new leader, all markers are removed. Does this go for the barbarians as well? For example, when the Ostrogoths and Vandals get their new leaders according to the turn-record-track, who are then stacked with def/disorg armies, does the removal of these markers also apply? A: No 2) Persian army is defeated and withdraws to the Persian box. Does it get to remove the Defeated Status marker at the end of the turn, or does it have to expand 4 mp the next time it is activated to remove it? A: The former. See the errata on the GMT website 3) When an army is not paid at the beginning of the turn, can its status change later that same turn due to looting or SP addition? A: Yes. See 5.24 4) If a previously unpaid army is paid in the Byzantine maintenance phase, does its status change to 'paid'. The rules are not clear on this. A: Yes 5) Do victorious armies check for disorganization after defeating enemy frontier troops/detached SP, or just other armies? A: The winner checks after every combat 6) Related to question above, do unpaid troops roll for looting after defeating an enemy 'army', or any type force (frontier/SP)? A: Any force 7) Do navies block sea straits? i.e. can an ostrogoth navy sail down and block the strait between Sicily and Italy to prevent an enemy army from crossing it? A: No 8) Rules state that barbarian allies can only move and attack. However, if (for example) a Lombard army which is allied to the Ostrogoths attacks a Byzantine-controlled province in Italy, defeating the byzantine army or frontier troops there. If no Byzantine troops remain in the province, does the province revert back to Ostrogoth control? A: No 8b) If so, would the Lombard army have to pay 1 MP to 'remove' Byzantine control? A: No 8c) In the above example, would it make a difference if the Lombards were activated via random activation of if they were activated as part of a combined operation? A: No 9) Does defeat in battle end an army's movement, or can it still expand movement points afterwards (to remove the defeated marker and attack, for example)? A: It can continue to expend MP 9b) If yes to the above, would the 2 MP penatly for the marker have to be applied right then? For example, Byzantine army has 7 MP to use. It attacks an enemy army in the same province, expending 1 MP. It loses the battle and gains a defeated marker. Does it have 6 MP left, 4 MP, or none? A: 6MP. Its up to the player whether or not to pay for the removal of the marker 10) A Barbarian minor (for example, Visigoths) is activated and it attacks and takes a Byzantine city province. The rules state that as long as the army marker remains in the city province, it does not have to be removed. So, what happens to it? Does it and all of its SP remain on the board for another turn(s)? If activated again (this turn or next), does it roll for more SP? What if, when activated in a later turn, they come in as a Byzantine ally - does the city province revert to Byzantine control? A: Yes. No. Depends if other Barbarian forces or a control marker is present 11) Does the pleague affect everyone, or just the Byzantines? Does it affect barbarians that retreated with some SP back into their box? In order to be considered 'in a city province' does one have to control that province? A: Everyone 12) Can navies be in port only in provinces with cities, or any coastal provinces? A: Any coastal province
