David Buckland - May 20, 2007 5:45 am (#541 Total: 542) Ian, Thank you for your patience. I have some more questions, as we get to grips with the game. KR&O 3.221 Each Formation may participate in an Operation only once per Impulse. So, a Formation which moves to join and is then subordinated to a Grand Army at the end of its movement prevents the Grand Army from performing any Operations that Impulse, even if the latter has not previously moved? 3.76 Multinational Forces. Does this rule only apply to Armies, not to Columns? If so, to clarify, a Column can therefore consist of any mixture of contingents without penalty? A leader posted to a multinational Column can come from any Contingent present? 5.3 Attrition: is the positive modifier for friendly terrain used if only some of the units in the moving Formation are in friendly territory? CoE 1.43 The Austrian Netherlands & Luxembourg are Austrian Influenced according the State Guide, but this rule says they are neutral (meaning unaligned?). 2.3 Campaign Plans. Can a partially conquered region be selected again? For example, the French choose Conquer Flanders, and swiftly take Ypres and Menin plus one or two other objectives, before choosing to inactivate the French Hub to rebuild its preparedness. Conquer Flanders has been partially achieved, but most of the Additional Objectives remain in Allied hands. When the French Hub reactivates, can the French choose Conquer Flanders again? 3.224 Maritime Powers Hub: is ignored for all purposes when the Austrian Primary Hub is in play. To clarify, this means that in this case the Maritime Powers Hub cannot be used at all (eg. cannot add to its preparedness if Inactive)? 6.31 Croats Over The Rhine. To clarify: this can happen once a year, checked quarterly (except for 1744, when it is checked every turn). The effect of the Bavaria Crushed event is that two checks are made, but still only one Croat invasion may take place per annum (ie. Bavaria Crushed makes the Croats more likely to cross the Rhine). 8.0 Scenarios: who places their forces first, when setting up? 8.214 French Leaders. Milord Bulkely (French General) appears to have no Influence Rating? 8.314 Allied Leaders: Ligonier is listed as a General, Campbell as a Marshal. Should it be the other way around? 9.111 & 9.511 1744 & Campaign Allied Set-Ups. The Barrier Forts appear to require a minimum garrison of 23 SPs (4 Fortresses, 2 Walled Towns, & 2 Fortified Cities). But the historical set-ups only allocate 21 SPs to the Barrier Fort garrisons, and the set-up instructions appear to prevent any other Allied troops from being deployed into the forts. Is this correct? ian weir - May 20, 2007 1:46 pm (#542 Total: 542) He was accused of spending a large part of every day at table, and of passing the evening in all kinds of excesses. KR&O 3.221 Each Formation may participate in an Operation only once per Impulse. So, a Formation which moves to join and is then subordinated to a Grand Army at the end of its movement prevents the Grand Army from performing any Operations that Impulse, even if the latter has not previously moved? Should not be an issue: 3.622 HQs stacked together may also exchange their contents freely when permitted to Reorganise (Administrative Phase & after Battle). These are the only times Formations may be merged. 3.76 Multinational Forces. Does this rule only apply to Armies, not to Columns? If so, to clarify, a Column can therefore consist of any mixture of contingents without penalty? A leader posted to a multinational Column can come from any Contingent present? Correct. Columns in most games have a “national” colour background & flag, but this is only a guide. Only by special rule will a column be restricted under 3.76 (e.g. in SOK, French and Prussian Column HQs may not contain units belonging to the opposite contingent, even when those powers are allied). Stating the obvious, opposing sides cannot share column counters. 5.3 Attrition: is the positive modifier for friendly terrain used if only some of the units in the moving Formation are in friendly territory? Only 2 situations are possible: 1) all units moving as a formation are friendly to each other, and therefore the territory is friendly to all, or to none. 2) or, some of the moving units consider the territory as “neutral”. In the latter case, the beneficial modifier is applied even if only 1 unit in the formation is “in friendly territory”. CoE 1.43 The Austrian Netherlands & Luxembourg are Austrian Influenced according the State Guide, but this rule says they are neutral (meaning unaligned?). This is a typo. The State Guide was not included in the original game, but it reflects a better understanding of the situation than I originally held. Treat the territories as Austrian Influenced. Let me know if you find any other errors of this sort. According to KR&Os 9.4: 9.431 Plans often have a mix of Minimum and Additional objectives. Once the player has achieved his Minimum Objectives, he is free to attempt to take the Additional Objectives of the same Plan. Clarification: a player may try for Additional objectives at any time, but these never count toward the Minimum requirements. 9.432 If a player cannot achieve all the objectives listed under the Minimum qualifications by the time all the Plan’s associated Hubs go Inactive, the Plan Fails. 9.433 If a Plan Fails, any Additional Objectives that may have been taken are discounted. What is implied but not clearly stated, is that if you succeed in taking the minimum objectives, the plan has been completed (successfully). This means that you can’t choose the plan again (unless the enemy retakes the territory at some point). But you can take Additional Objectives assigned to that plan at any time and earn any awards specific to them. In your example, you would need to take Ypres, Menin, Furnes, Nieuport, and Courtrai before switching off, or the plan fails. If you took them all, plus Oudenarde, you would succeed, but earn no bonus points for Oudenarde, because you need 2 additional objectives to earn 1 PP. Later, while engaged in Conquering Brabant, you could take Bruges, and (assuming you still held Oudenarde), earn the 1 PP bonus for holding 2 additional objectives of the Conquer Flanders plan, despite the fact that the latter plan is over and done with. 3.224 Maritime Powers Hub: is ignored for all purposes when the Austrian Primary Hub is in play. To clarify, this means that in this case the Maritime Powers Hub cannot be used at all (eg. cannot add to its preparedness if Inactive)? Correct. The rule is intended to reflect the shift that occurred when the Austrians took over the burden of the defence post-1745. (By 3.222, the Austrian primary hub appears with the Austro-Prussian Treaty event). “But what if Charles of Lorraine is not on the map?” (3.222) Initially, you will be using the Maritimes hub until he arrives. Should he be subsequently removed from the map, you can turn the Maritimes hub on again, per 3.222. It is intended that the latter hub have only the same amount of preparedness as when it was turned off – not that they wouldn’t be accumulating supplies, but preparedness also represents strategic initiative. Mostly Correct. 6.311 is a little unclear – this case is only intended to apply in the 1744 minor scenario. In the campaign game, use the general rule of checking 1 per quarter, with an additional check after the Bavarian Crushed event. 8.0 Scenarios: who places their forces first, when setting up? Although not stated, set up was intended to be simultaneous. As a house rule, you can make the Allies set up first in all scenarios, even those where they are the strategic attacker. (This suggestion is off the cuff, but reflects the strategic situation & I'm tempted to make it official). 8.214 French Leaders. Milord Bulkely (French General) appears to have no Influence Rating? Auggh! I hate counter errata. Give him a rating of “3” - part of the Irish clique. 8.314 Allied Leaders: Ligonier is listed as a General, Campbell as a Marshal. Should it be the other way around? Yes 9.111 & 9.511 1744 & Campaign Allied Set-Ups. The 21 SPs is correct. You are not mandated to fill fortifications to their minimum garrisons per the TEC, only to put all 21 SPs into the Barrier. However, I cannot find any restriction on the placement of other SPs (and there shouldn’t be one – 1.23 point #3, any Allied SPs may be used in these locations).
