Kerry Anderson - Aug 17, 2004 5:12 am (#2341 Total: 2346) Microgame Design Group Answers to some BYZANTIUM REBORN questions. 1. In 5.4.2: After French units are destroyed, where do they appear when they are replaced? On any French-occupied or Armenian-occupied city (6.2, para. 4). 2. In placing foreign replacements, lets say if all the French, Italian, Armenian units are destroyed on that particular turn, if they are automatically replaced, where do they end up? They don't. This is intentional--all three forces were extremely fragile and vulnerable, and if they lose control of their bases, they essentially evaporate. The French/Armenians simply have to hold onto a city somewhere. And the Italians (they were harder to game, as they historically left before the war spread to their areas) are in the same boat. And the Green Army is obviously doomed if it takes a hit! It says in the rules that they have to end up in an Italian, French or Armenian occupied city but if they are all destroyed then they cannot start on the map again. I think a solution to this would be to reword it so that those foreign units start either in a city occupied by their respective nationalities or appear in a city flagged by their nationalities and not occupied or controlled by opposing nations(eg. The Italian units lost in combat appear at any Italian occupied city or Italian Flagged city not occupied by Greek controlled units). That was originally how we wrote the rules, but playtesting showed that this made them historically just a bit too strong. It isn't a major change, however, so if you want to write this as a house rule, go for it. I hate to sound like Fresno Gaming Association ('our rules are crap, go write your own!') but there is a lot of value in house rules that originate from outside the core design/playtest group. Eventually we'll do an online errata/update for BYZANTIUM REBORN and suggestions like yours are welcome. R. Ben Madison
