Fire and Movement#91 Blitzkrieg in the South RULES QUESTIONS 1) Please clarify the calculation of movement costs through woods and give an example for movement for both motorized and non-motorized units. For movement costs, woods are added to the terrain cost; so for clear plus woods the total cost is (1+1=2) for non-motorized, or (1+2=3) for motorized and artillery; for hills and woods the total cost is (2+1=3) for non-motorized, or (2+2=4) for motorized and artillery. 2) I assume the highest and lowest possible modified die rolls are '0' and 11, especially considering one can achieve at least a minus three or a plus four (or higher) to the die roll for any single combat situation. Yes, no modified roll less than 0 or greater than 11 is allowed. 3) German units are adjacent to 2 Soviet fortified units in different hexes (inverted UR units or regular units under fortified counter). Is the DRM +2 or +1? The DRM = +1. 4) Can Soviet UR units (on their front fortified side) be taken as a step loss when stacked with other Soviet units? If so, do the UR units have to be taken first or is it up to the Soviet player to determine this? UR units can take a step loss even though they have a movement allowance of zero and are stacked with other Soviet units. There is no priority of loss, but note that they are not able to retreat and would be destroyed if the force retreats. 5) What exactly are "major cities"? Please give a listing of these. Please also note that after the DRM on the Combat Effects Chart for a major city, there should be a "(see 8.23)," as a reminder for armor attacking into this terrain. There are only two major cities: Lvov (1 hex) and Kiev (2 hexes). Both of their names are underlined on the map to help distinguish them from other cities. Odessa is not a major city. However, note that it is spread over 3 hexes. Regarding major cities, a 1950 census places 95,090 inhabitants at Zhitomir vs. 316,461 at Lvov, so one will need to make a strong case to change the latter to a major city. I really wanted hex C6332 of Odessa to be a major city hex, but the graphics guy was not able to make the distinction. 6) Who sets up first in scenario #2, Rundstedt Attacks? The Soviet player sets up first in scenario #2. 7) Is the NKVD unit in Lvov the only garrison in scenario #2, or are there others which are not listed? The NKVD unit in Lvov is the only garrison unit in this scenario. 8) In scenario #2, are the 4 units listed supposed to be placed in Brody or A3913? The set-up card is wrong here in listing Brody as A3913. Soviet units marked for Brody are placed in Brody, hex A3919 (not A3913 which is incorrect). 9) Once again concerning scenario #2, are the German 125th and 13th Panzer divisions correctly set up as per the scenario Axis Unit Organization card on hexes 2014 and 1021? From my research, these two positions seem questionable. (Especially for the 125th division.) The 125th was in reserve but close to the game map and so it was but a short stretch to get it into play. The 13th Pz is correctly placed at A2014. My maps show it spread out, but over an area centered on A2014. MAP QUESTIONS a) Does the river in B1634 and C1601 continue, or does it stop as indicated in C1.601? The river continues north into map B. b) There is no gray road leading from B6933 to the south, yet C6901 indicates that it should be connected, does it connect the two hexes or not?. Hex B6933 should have a minor road that leads to C6901. c) Is the red splotch in A4328 a woods or hill or what? The red splotch is a printer's error and does not indicate any terrain. Did anyone notice the squashed ant near the Bug River? d) Does the major road from A4750 connect to A4850? What about from A4749 to A4750? The main road leadsfrom A4750 to A4749, then to A4850. e) The hexes A4834, C1001, and B1034, all indicate different ways for the gray road to go. I assume hex A4834 is correct, but what about the northern road leading to nowhere in hex C1001 (which I have covered up by A4834, with of course B1034 on the bottom)? Map A is correct; note also that C1001 should not lead to B1034. f) What about the main road connecting A4753 and C1021? Is this possible, to use/assume? Playtesting did not indicate a need for this road or call for its removal. Anyone wishing to draw it in may do so.
