From: John Kranz Subject: Summer Storm Errata COA'S SUMMER STORM OFFICIAL ERRATA AND CLARIFICATIONS so far (11/15/98) Q/1. My first question is about the DRM for combat that are due to the orders of the respective units. Could you fill in the correct DRM in the following chart for the side-specific modifiers (ie mods due to orders)? Active Unit's Nonactive(enemy) unit's Attacker's Defender's Order order DRM DRM Attack Defend +3 +3(+1 for attack Orders, and +2 for the defend) Attack Attack +2 +2 Defend Attack* +3 +3 (as above) Defend Defend* (+2/+2, but I believe it would not happen often) Direct Attack +1 +3 Direct Defend 0 +2 I realize the Defend-defend outcome will not arise very often, so I'm not that concerned with it but threw it in there for completeness. For all attack orders, assume that the chit has been drawn for the nonactive units (ie attack orders are in place and the DAC is face down on the div. leader). Q/ 2. Clarification: For battle outcome, the difference in cohesion hits is based on the per-unit result, not the per-side result, correct? In other words, using the example in the book, though the four attacking units each sustained 2 hits (total of 8 hits for the attackers), they would be considered the "winner" since the lone defender took 3 hits (total of 3 hits for the defenders) and in this case the defender would have to morale check, not the attacker. A/2 Correct The number of C/Hits applied to each SIDE in the combat is what determines the 'winner/loser'; the number of units on a side suffering that result has no effect whatsoever. Q/ 3. Clarification: For tracing LOS, if the higher unit is more than one level higher than for each level over one, any intervening slope is moved one hex closer to the uphill unit. After this modification, the slope hexside blocks LOS if it is halfway between or closer to the lower unit. Correct? A/3 Correct Q/4. Clarification: If a unit supports another in combat and the engaged unit is retreats through the supporting unit, then the following results: The supporting unit gains 1 C/Hit and must take a morale check after the opponent follows up. This means that the supporting unit will probably take its MC in enemy ZOC. Is this a correct interpretation? A/4 Yes, if the enemy unit follows up. Q/5 Does the supporting unit in the above example have the option to withdraw/retreat 3 hexes in order to avoid the ZOC penalty? A/5 No, in the rules as written. May have to check that one out further. Q/6 Does the supporting unit have a -1 DRM for the cohesion hit it took due to the engaged unit passing through it? A/6 Yes, Morale Checks ALWAYS get a -DRM for any C/Hits received as a result of the event triggering the M/Check. Q/7 Clarification: ACPs can be converted to PPPs for a specific corps on a specific turn on more than one turn correct? In other words, at 7, 8, 9 and 10 o'clock, I can put PPP's toward's Longstreet for the 4pm turn. On his second CCP roll for the 4 pm turn, he would get the TOTAL number of PPP's banked on turns 7 through 10. A/7 Yes, that is the cvorrect interpretation. It also shows me another fine point that may not have been included, but which testing showed was necessary to avoid a non historic level of Army control.. Add to 6.3.2 PREPLANNING POINTS: If playing the Tactical Game without the Operational Game, Preplanning Points (PPPs) may NOT be assigned to a Corps Leader who is himself not yet on the Tactical Board. Q/8 OOB: For the CS OOB, I didn't see Daniel or Scales's Brigades. I assume you have them arriving with their respective Divisions. Also, Cutler has 2 "B" counters and no "C" counters. Minor details though. A/8 Daniels A/B/C, and Scales A/B do indeed arrive with Rodes' and Pender's Divisions, respectively on July 1st. (That's what happens when you don't speak up at roll call!!!) Cutler is indeed a typo, and the extra 'B' should be a'C'. I missed it when proofing the countersheet, but it should certainly have no effect on the battle. Q/9 Cavalry Stacking: at one point it says Cavalry units can stack (in the stacking rules) but in the Cav. rules (10.6, I think), it says they can't. Also, units in Gamble's brigade start the game stacked. So which is it? A/9 The Cavalry rules and the Charts are right. The decision to limit the ability of Cavalry to stack, while I think is the right way to go and fosters their proper use, was made fairly latein the process and, of course, I missed one of the cross references. As it says in the Cav. section, and on the charts, Cavalry units may NOT stack, except with a single Artillery unit. Make the following rules changes: 8.1.2 In open ground, a maximum of 3 Combat units may stack, only 2 of which may be Artillery Units. In all terrain types, Cavalry units may not stack, except with a single artillery Unit. 8.1.5 Only Infantry units of the same brigade, or Artillery units of the same Battalion/Brigade, may ever be voluntarily stacked together. However, ...... Q/10 For the initiative DR during the Admin. Phase, it says that ACP's modify it by 3xACP. But the charts say 2XACP. Which is correct? A/10 It's +3 per ACP spent, as shown in the rules and on the ACP expenditure Chart (Chart B) The (x2) shown on the Initiative roll (Chart A) was indeed a typo. Essentially, we used the higher xDRM to show that this is perhaps the most important use of those ACPs. Q/11 Do you use extra markers to record the Independent Division's CCP's? I'm assuming that these units can spend CCP's during the turn to modify their Activity roll if they have some remaining after giving orders. Also, what is the US Cavalry Corps CCP marker for since there is no Pleasanton? A/11 Yes, you use those letter coded DACs to indicate an Independent Division; one on the CCP track and one placed on or near the Division Leader on the Map. Independent Leaders can indeed spend CCPs on their own Activity Rolls (either hoisting themself by their own bootstraps or kicking themself in the ass, whichever picture you like best), but CANNOT save them for a later turn. Also please note that VERY important -DRM on their CCP roll for being Independent. As for The Cavalry Corps CCP Markers (both Union and Confederate) these are used in the Cavalry Field Scenario, when the Cavalry Division Commanders (Stuart and Gregg) are considered to be 'Corps' Commanders for command purposes. Q/12 Heth's Division arrives piecemeal, please tell me if the following is correct: If Heth remains within command radius of the CP entry hex, then he can modify the arrival roll for Pettigrew and Brockenbrough's brigades. Pettigrew and Brock. move together as a separate group (marked with a letter coded DAC) until each moves into Heth's command radius. If at the end of the 8am turn for example, only Pettigrew is in command, he now joins the rest of Heth's division for 9 am activations, while Brockenbough moves alone. Regardless of the location of Heth, until these brigades move into command, they add Heth's command rating to their activity rolls and move together. A/12 Pretty much correct. It would hard to get only Pettigrew in Command without Brock., as they both come on board as a SINGLE group of reinforcements., Still, if it happens, Brock. would remain as the letter-coded Independent group till he got into command. This wouldn't happen if their entry hex was within Heth's Command Range, as previously mentioned. As for the Command rating used as an Arrival/Activity roll DRM, you bring up a point which was stated in the Cav. Field Scenario rules but obviously not back fitted here as it should have been: add to: 9.6.4 ... letter coded DACs. For purpose of Arrival/Activity rolls, the arriving reinforcement group gets a Command Rating equal to 1/2 of the best Morale rating in the Group, rounded up. If the onboard Division is.......
