From The Wargamer#24 Question Box: Siege at Peking Q. Can a bayonet charge be conducted in conjunction with other types of combat? i.e. Ranged fire and Normal. A. No. See rule 3. "before the start of". Q. What happens to the Zones of Control, at the moment of combat, of the Bayonet Charging unit and the defender? Will a retreat result eliminate the recipient of the result? Or do the two units (or stacks of units) involved in the hex in the Charge is made into cancel out each others ZOC's? A. Ignore ZOC of units actually involved. Q. During movement does the Bayonet Charging Unit(s) stop in the hex adjacent to the potential Defender, then just before combat move into the defender's hex? Or is the attacker's movement calculated into the defender's hex? This would mean ignoring ZOC's in hexes adjacent to the defender, exerted by enemy units. It would also mean calculating the number of movement points differently by a minimum of 1 extra movement point. A. Count the hex of the unit(s) being attacked, as part of the attacker's movement. Ignore only the ZOC of the units being attacked. Q. In the combat rules it states for Normal Combat, that the Phasing players units "must attack all enemy units whose ZOC they are in". Do you really mean that or should this statement be interpreted to mean - All units of the phasing player in Enemy ZOC's must attack some unit they are adjacent to and all enemy units that have phasing units in their ZOC's must be attacked in some manner. For example, Attacker "A" is in the ZOC of Defender's "X" and "Y"; "Y" can be hit by ranged fire at odds of 1:3 or better, therefore can "Y" be attacked solely by ranged fire while "A" attacks "X"? A. Your intepretation is correct. Q. Normal combat rules also state: "No attacks can be made at less than 1-3 odds; any unit found to attack at less than 1-3 suffers automatic AE...result". a) If this situation arises is the AE result assessed before all other combats or does the attacker still have the option on the other combats that are fought in a phase? This could have an important impact on blocking the retreat route of other defenders. I realize you cannot intentionally set up an attack at less than 1-3 odds but Allied reaction movement could bring about this situation. A. Attacker decides the order of attacks; automatic AE results are not necessarily taken first. b) Allied reaction movement could bring about a situation where a soak off is possible, e.g. Attackers: A (55 SP), B (55 SP) Defenders: X (6 SP), Y (4 SP x 3 = 12 SP), Z (6 SP x 3 = 18 SP) Can A attack X at 5:6 or 1:2 odds while B soaks off against Y and Z at 5:30 or 1:6 odds? Or must both attacks be as close to 1-3 as possible? (The above example assumes "Y" is adjacent to both "A" and "B" and no ranged support is possible). A. The attacker must make as few "illegal" (less than 1:3) attacks as possible. Q. Though units in Buildings are not obligated to attack, if they do, which of the following statements is correct? a) they have complete freedom to attack in any manner they wish, either by ranged attack or by normal combat and if by normal may attack all, some or only 1 enemy unit to which they are adjacent or b) if an attack is made and there are adjacent enemy units it must be a normal attack and ranged fire cannot be used A. a) is correct. Q. If there is nore than one friendly unit in the same building hex and the phasing player attacks from that hex must he use all the units in that hex or could he withhold some from the attack? A. Some may attack, and others not. Q. Stacking: just for clarification purposes - Leaders, with 1 Combat Strength Point count as 1 SP for stacking, therefore they can never stack with a 10 SP unit! Correct? A. Correct. Though a leader can stack with such a unit when it has taken a single step loss, of course. Q. Can a single Unit conduct ranged fire against more than 1 hex, adding all the defender's strengths together as one combat? (Providing of course he is within range of all targets, with a clear LOS and odds of 1:3 or greater). A. Yes. (When reading the rules you should assume anything is allowed that is not explicitly or implicitly disallowed). Q. Retreat after Combat. Note (3) staes that "Units may not pass through a single hex more than once during the course of a 3 hex retreat." You do realize this means a unit could retreat in a circle, that leaves it adjacent to the hex it came from? A. Yes. Q. Leaders: It says leaders stacked with units that are eliminated are not lost but moved to the nearest friendly unit. Is this so even if the units it was stacked with were surrounded by enemy units or enemy ZOCs? A. Yes. Q. If a leader is stacked with a unit firing ranged fire in combination with a unit using Normal Combat, can he still use his 1SP to modify the die? Or would he have to be stacked with the unit adjacent to the defender? A. He can modify the die in these circumstances. Q. Can more than one leader use his 1SP to modify the die roll of a single attack? e.g. if 3 leaders are stacked with Units participating in a single attack could that provide a die roll modified of 3 etc? A. Yes.
