From: Jonathan Gingerich Subject: Buena Vista Answers The following is my interpretations of answers obtained from Richard Pfost. They are intended to correctly reflect what he said, but the categories (CONFIRMATION, CLARIFICATION, ADDITION, CORRECTION) are entirely my own opinion. I would point out that much of this is confirmation, and the additions and corrections are easily guessed. If there are more questions than usual I suggest its because: I'm interested in the game so I've asked a bunch (don't bet that Moscow Burning has less!) The game has some new mechanisms and the system is sensitive to small differences in interpretation. XTR has slipped _a bit_. Things like the set-up errors really shouldn't have gotten out. Jon. Buena Vista Questions: 3.0 ADDITION: 7/T 4516 3/T 4417 "3/J" 4417 Guan/J 4522 SL/J 4522 CORRECTION "3/J" should be 3/T The 1KY on top of the slope should be stacked with the rest of the regt. The reverse of the SPat artillery counter should be 4 over 4. ADDITION: The Ortega brigade counters may be oriented as desired in their set-up hexes. CONFIRMATION: The 1AR is split between the main map and the Track. 4.2 CONFIRMATION: The "move an enemy counter" random result is like any other impulse move, with enemy firing at one hex range. To move Mexican artillery, it must be under a move counter and its MP's established by a die roll. CONFIRMATION: The Saltillo garrison rout off the main map as well as the Track. 4.3 CONFIRMATION: VPs are only earned for steps lost in the combat tables. A one step counter loses one step and one VP is earned upon a "2" result. A counter routed and eliminated does not earn VPs. 5.3 ADDITION: Hex 3120 should be treated as a clear hex with a road, ignoring the stream in it. 5.4 ADDITION: Mexican reserve units must be placed entirely within the Mexican reserve area boundary. 6.1 ADDITION: The TxR is exempt from activation. CONFIRMATION: Both US dragoons and dragoon commanders are exempt from activation. 6.3 CLARIFICATION: If Wool or Taylor activate the stack in their hex and it contains a formation commander, the formation commander becomes activated and may activate his formation through the method described in 6.1. CORRECTION: Activation of Wool or Taylor's hex does not count against their total allowed activations. 7.1 CLARIFICATION: Leaders do not receive a 1 hex "stacked with leader" bonus. CLARIFICATION: The 1 hex bonus cannot be used to cross an impassable hex-side. 7.3, 8.5, and 9.7 CLARIFICATION: Moving and non-moving counters must retreat 1 hex and counters defeated in shock combat must retreat 3 hexes. Fire from adjacent enemy units takes place during retreat, but further retreat results are ignored. Retreat must continue beyond the 1 or 3 hex minimum only if the counter is still adjacent to an enemy which can fire on it. Otherwise the path of the retreat is up to the owning player. 7.4 ADDITION: double size counters may pivot across impassable hex-sides, but may not straddle them. 7.5 ADDITION: Counters must move one at a time, but may you move a leader and a counter together. 8.2 ADDITION: An attacker must shock all counters in a defender's hex. 8.2 and 9.2 CONFIRMATION: Formation commanders modify _any_ units they are stacked with for fire, shock, and morale. CONFIRMATION: Inactive leaders do modify counters even though their values are not printed on the inactive side. 8.4 and 9.6 ADDITION: Leaders' morale bonus modify fire and shock "r" results as well as the initiate shock combat roll. ADDITION: On a "1r" result do you test for morale after step loss. 9.3 CONFIRMATION: Friendly units do not block LOS. 9.3.3 CLARIFICATION: This rule should read, "it crosses an impassable hex-side between adjacent firing and target counters". 9.8 CORRECTION: Routed counters are prohibited from rallying in Buena Vista if the Mexicans are within 5 hexes on the main map, as stated in the rules, and over-ruling the table on the map. CLARIFICATION: Counters which rout when they lose their last step return as one step counters. Counter which rout when they cannot retreat return at the strength they routed with. 10.2 CONFIRMATION: A counter on the Saltillo Track may move to hex G in the Track phase, be placed on the main map, then move during player impulses.
