From: Jonathan Gingerich Subject: Buena Vista Q&A These are answers I got from Richard Pfost. I have done a little editing for clarity, and have left out some exchanges I need to clarify. Jon. - Red Sox fan in mourning... Buena Vista Questions: 3.0 The following is correct? 7/T 4516 3/T 4417 "3/J" 4417 Guan/J 4522 SL/J 4522 "3/J" should obviously be 3/T (Yes) Is it intended that Ortega's counters be set-up head to head (4720-4621,4820-4919) to represent organizational confusion, or should it be changed? (SET UP THE COUNTERS IN THE DESIGNATED HEXES TO YOUR SUITING) What are the correct numbers for the reduced side of the SPat arty? (4 OVER 4) 4.2 When "move an enemy counter" random result occurs, does firing take place? (YES) Mexican artillery can only be moved if they are marked with a moving counter, and then you roll a die to determine their MPs, correct? (YES) 4.3 A counter loses only as many steps as it has, and a VP is earned for each step lost. If it rallies and returns, it returns as a 1 step counter and another VP can be earned if it later loses that step. Correct? (YES) If a counter routs because it cannot retreat and rallies, it returns with its remaining steps and no VPs are earned, correct. (YES) 5.4 May Mexican reserve units be place on boundary hexes? (NO) Should the TxR be exempt from activation? (CORRECT) 7.3, 8.5, and 9.7 A non-moving counter which retreats because of fire does take additional fire, but is unaffect by retreat results, but must continue retreat to a hex not adjacent to an enemy counter which can fire, correct? (YES) A non-moving counter which retreats because of shock does take additional fire, but is unaffected by retreat results, but must continue retreat to a hex not adjacent to an enemy counter which can fire, correct? (YES) Non-moving counters retreat because of fire 1 hex further from the firing counter; non-moving counters retreat because of shock 3 hexes away from the attacking counter. Otherwise, the owning player is free to chose the retreat path, correct? (YES) May the owning player deliberately choose to move adjacent to an enemy counter which can fire in a hex 3(1) or more from the attacking(firing) enemy counter he is retreating from? (YES) 7.4 May a double size counter pivot so that it straddles impassable hexsides? (NO) May a double size counter pivot so that it swings over impassable hexsides? (YES) 7.5 Counters must move one at a time, but may you move a leader and a counter together? (so that the counter may benefit from the leaders fire mods during movement.) (YES) 8.2 An attacker must shock all counters in a defender's hex, correct? (AFTER) 9.3.3 This rule should read, "it crosses an impassable hexside between adjacent firing and target counters", correct? (YES) 9.8 Are routed units prohibited from rallying in Buena Vista if Mexicans are within 5 hexes on the main map as in the rules, or adjacent as on the table on the map? (WITHIN 5 HEXES AS IN THE RULES) 10.2 May a counter on the Saltillo track move to hex G and then be placed on the map (where it could move during the Player Impulses) (YES) From: Paul Blankenship ITG Subject: Buena Vista Questions and Answers I sent the following questions for Command 40 Buena Vista and got the following answers from the Game's designer. > 6.3 (last paragraph) > A - If taylor or wool activate their stack does it count as one of > their activation points? Or do they get to activate their own stack > as well as 1/3 other stacks. A - No, Yes > > B - Does the Chain reaction reaction noted in rule 6.1 occur when > taylor or wool activates the units in their hex. B - Yes Chain reaction - (only on main map), activates subordinate units of the activated leader only > > C - If taylor or wool has a leader stacked with him that he > auto-activates, does that leader then follow the normal activation > rules listed in 6.1 C - Yes > --------------------------------------------------------------------- > 7.1 (leader movement bonus) > > A - Does the leader get a 'bonus' hex when moving by itself. A - no > > B - Does it matter which hex of movement is the free one, if not then > as a player I would always claim the most expensive hex to enter is > the free one. B - As long as it is the last hex moved into > > C - The units stacked with a leader get a free hex, does the leader > also get a free hex, or does the leader still have to stick to 8 MP's. > This is similar to question A above. C - As long as the leader is stacked with the unit from the start, they then get the leader bonus. > > D - I assume the free hex cannot be used to cross an impassable > hexside or enter an unenterable hex. D - correct > ----------------------------------------------------------------------- > 7.4 double sided counters > > A - When moving forward these counters pay the normal movement costs, > even though they need to 'pivot' in order for the tail to end up in > the same hex the front of the counter was just in. The only time they > pay all their movement costs to 'pivot' is when they wish to keep one > end of the counter where it is. (correct?) A - Correct > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > 5.4 reserve attack > > A - What if there are american units in the reserve attack zone, is > there any effect on mexican unit setup? A - No The designer had these final comments. To maintain your wits while becoming familiar with the game, use the if its reasonable do it, if its not reasonable don't do it. The more you play, hopefully, the more tactical and operational options you will be exposed to and the smoother the game will flow. Let me know if you enjoy it. Richard A.
