Q: Regarding Bombardment Line of Sight: if the LOS runs directly along a hexside between two un-connected hill hexes, and the hexside itself is not a blocking hexside, is LOS still blocked? A: Yes, LOS is still blocked. Q: Regarding 6.3 Applying Combat Results: results are applied to the defender first, but are Steps 1 through 4 all applied to the defender and then the 4 Steps all applied to the attacker, or is Step 1 applied to the defender then the attacker, then Step 2 applied to the defender then the attacker, and so on? A: Your second choice is correct. First, Apply Step Losses to the defender, then to the attacker. Next, Conduct Mandatory Retreats for the defender, then for the attacker, and so on. See the Comprehensive Example of Play. Q: In cases where the Final Combat Odds would have been less than 1-4 due to column shifts, does the attacker get to roll the die? (No bombardment is involved here.) In 6.2, Step #6, it says: "If terrain shifts would cause the [final] odds ratio to be reduced to less than 1-to-4, the attacking player does not roll a die". Yet in 6.2, Step #4, it says "column shifts...below 1-to-4 are ignored". A: The attacker does not roll the die. The rules should have said "column shifts below 1-to-4 are ignored, except that the attacker does not get to roll the die. See Step #6, Exception." And the Comprehensive Example of Play, Game Turn #4, Step #4, should have said "combat odds of less than 1-to-4 are always resolved on the Defender's Combat Results Table only, on the 1- to-4 column." (not "on the Combat Results Tables."). Column shifts below 1-4 are not ignored completely. Q: The rules say the defenders can advance after the attackers conduct an automatic retreat. Can the defenders advance if they destroy the attackers? A: No. The second bullet under the section "Restrictions on Advance" of rules 6.6 Advance, states that a defender cannot advance as a result of combat, except if the "attacker" was conducting an automatic retreat. Q: Regarding terrain modifiers, what if the defender is on a road hex where the road does NOT lead to the attacker? The rules seem to imply that there would be no terrain modifier, because they are on a road. But if the attackers don't have that same road to "charge down", so to speak, it seems like they would have to use the terrain modifier for the type of terrain. A: Whether the defender is on a road or not doesn't matter. The Terrain Effects Chart, under Column Shifts, shows the effect of terrain on combat, and a road causes no column shifts. The real terrain in the hex applies. The footnote "Negates the cost of..." only applies to movement costs. COMPREHENSIVE EXAMPLE OF PLAY ----------------------------- Game Turn #3, Step #5, Combat Resolution Die Rolls, should say "...on the 1-to-1 odds column..." (not 3-to-1). Q: In Game Turn #4, there is an example where an infantry plus a bombarding artillery are attacking an infantry. The attacking infantry chooses an Automatic Retreat, but in hopes of preventing the defender from advancing into the vacated hex, the artillery bombards the defender as part of the same combat. No damage is inflicted on the defender, who then advances. If the bombardment had caused a step loss to the defender, but he had passed his Morale Check, could he have then advanced into the vacated hex? A: If he had passed his Morale Check, yes. Of course, if he had failed and had to retreat, no. <<<<<
